Modeltitis, gotta love it.

Last fall I bought a fast electric V24 racing boat to have while I finish up Dauntless. I fried the stock LIPO so I bought a 5000 MAH LIPO for it that weighed more than double what the original LIPO was. So over the winter while I worked on Dauntless, I also worked on the V24. I ended up removing all the gear, gutted the stock wood stand, gave the entire interior a coat of epoxy to toughen up the original glass job even more, sanded & painted the bottom flat black and built a custom support stand for the new LIPO, receiver, servo & rest of the gear. The new stand had to be done because the original LIPO was on the port side and with the new LIPO it threw off the CG. The boat would end up listing heavily to port. The stand I built is 10X better and stronger than the stock equipment and the LIPO is now located in center and lowest part of the boat. The CG on the boat is now perfect.

That boat will be ready to fly by the weekend.

Hopefully in the next few months I will be able to get back to Dauntless. House projects are going to dominate most of my time over the spring & summer.

-Rich.

Dauntless Captains,

Dauntless has a way of keep calling out to me every time I step pass the boat room. Although I don't have much time to do extensive work right now, I did manage to find time to prime all the areas that I have done work to in recent times. I am actually happy to report that she is getting there!

Here are the pictures taken today.

Me again,

Rather than edit, I am going to add one more. This one is in the forecastle facing aft toward the main cabin. I thought the forecastle shots were pretty cool so I decided to go back and take this one. Now that I know the interior should be painted white, I went ahead and did it. This will also show me areas that need attention. The small gap where the wall meets the ceiling in this photo, I have an easy fix for that.

Painting the interior white makes everything look so big & it does not look so dark looking into the boat.

I cannot wait to get back to work...

Enjoy!!

Hello Rich,
You are an inspiration! Makes me want to get back to work on my "Dauntless".
Sailing season started on April 5th so that takes up a fair part of my BOAT time.
Keep up the good work!

YTou're making me look like a piker for not posting my pics as I promised. Got the frames in place, with the replacement sheers and then had to buy some 1/4" x1/4" for the chines (more of the hull supplies that were AWOL) and get 'em into place. They are awaiting a nice day outside (and my feeling well - think I've got another bug) to be sanded to shape before the planking goes on.

I'll get the pics up soon as the AA's recharge or my Olympus FE180 (thank heavens someone makes a camera that taakes common batteries!) and can snatch 'em off the internal memory. Will take before and afters of the chine-sanding, and step-by-step during the planking too. I keep promising myself to photo-doc a build-up (be it tank or boat) and never got around to it before, but this baby deserves it, right?

I also notice that white primer does show where the kit needs filling/sanding/whatever, though in a pinch, grey will do (never could get white primer for my lead mini's - BattleTech 1/285 ones) and I have a can of flat white here awaiting post-epoxy coating of my hull. It'll also help reflect interior lighting, but a gloss white would be too much.

Thought you did that nice hardwood deck in the bridge area to show off a great planking job, but now its all painted... what gives? And aren't the cockpit railings supposed to be cut & able to be hinged up? Gotta make some ~very~ small hinges for that.

I hope to have her (and perhaps the other boats) water-ready for Canada Day (July 1) in hopes the local club is ~still~ doing their display down in Gananoque. Last time I was down was in the mid '80's; I almost sank my Dumas PT-109 in '85 (forgot to mount my mufflers after drilling holes for 'em, then in '86 loosing the props off my American Enterprise first run in the pond (though I fab'd some make-do's in the local hardware store from sheet ductwork scraps)

If any of you know if this show is still a going event, let me know? I can get to many within a few 100 miles of the Ogdensburg, NY crossing (upper St. Lawrence/1000 Islands) area) so give a shout out.

WhiteWolf

Hi Guys, it's the long lost Captain Butch.

Starting to get the building itch again, after a much needed rest.
For a while there, the doctors discovered, my heart had declined some more. But they will not tell me how much of it is damaged.

To be honest I was distaunt for a while, but I am back on top. They wanted to sleep and rest all day, and I could not do that after a few weeks. For I have been active all my life.
So I entered the Veterans Annual Craft Show, with a scratch built tow truck, with dollies, chains, sling, and working lights. And after Feb. 2009, it has won first place in six states so far.

Next week, the boat will be worked upon and to it's completion.
Butch

Werdon,
How about posting some shots of that tow truck of yours. I don't think the other guys would mind as long as we didn't 'hijack' the thread for too long. What do you think guys? Like to see it I would!

Butch:

Glad to see you won't let the doc's get you down. They don't know everything, and being positive helps a HE*LL of a lot! Stick with it, and do what makes YOU feel good, cause when you feel good, your body responds positively too.

If I'd let 'em do it to me, I'd ~still~ probably have a FUBAR throat with no hope in sight. Instead, I fought, and its been fixed for over a year now, my weight is coming back up with the TPN (88 lbs on Feb 26, 96 lbs on March 18, 106 lbs as of April 16 - thats a rate of 2.5 lbs per week) I should be up to my hoped-for 120 lbs by my next appt., and can get the doc to taper the gain off (don't wanna stress the weak bones!)

And YES, post some pics of the rig, or at least links to where it is. Are you a member of one of the You-Know-Who R/C trucking groups? Joe out in the Canadian Prairies runs it, and has some gorgous rigs. If you ain't there, lemme know, and I'll get you an invite.

I can rationalize a few rig pics, as they are often used to tow the special flatbeds they transport these cruisers on. You thought of making a flatbed for your Dauntless and towing it at displays, or is the scratch all static? I've got a cheap one (german plastics company) and will be making cradles for carrying the 'Shak' sub, 'Carina' cruiser, and may even see if the PT will fit (even if its out of scale - 1:32 on a 1/16 rig)

*sigh* I ~gotta~ get the camera out and photo-doc all my gear... even if its just for insurance purposes.

Wow! I’m glad to see the gang back!!!!!!

Hi Chuck, I’m glad that these pictures keep you inspired !

What kind of boat will you be sailing this season?

I recently got a fast V24 up and running and it draws a crowd at the local pond. Hopefully this can inspire more people to put down their lame fishing poles and get some boats. I am the only person that sails in my area and the fish in these ponds are not worth the bait & poles they are using. Today, I ran the boat and a crowd of teenagers that were hanging out lined up to the waters edge to see this thing run. At the end of the run they ALL began clapping at the same time… (which surprised me) & they came up to me began asking questions about the boat. Hopefully this will inspire more people (young and old alike) to give this interesting hobby of ours a try.

Hi Whitewolf, When you get a chance, get some pictures up! My “official” boat camera is an Olympus Stylus, they don’t take THAT LONG to charge so GET ON IT!

I like to use white primer on the boat & tend to go through lots of it. Flat white is also a good choice to use when no primer is around and works the same as primer. The interior of the boat will be painted white, but I will be using satin finish white for the interior and exterior areas that call for white for the final coat. I agree, gloss is to shiny & many master modelers don’t use full gloss because the shine is out of scale. The grey that will be used on the top decks is also a satin finish.

The hardwood deck looked terrible when I stained it. This is because the wood was interlocked with epoxy and some of it seeped into the wood & wouldn’t let up even after sanding. When I stained it, it looked old & worn. It would be ok if I were modeling an aged boat, but I want it to look fresh built. Also, since then I learned that the original Dauntless did not have a wood planked deck, but was actually carpeted in light grey. I am going to follow suit and carpet the deck. It will be done in light grey felt. The interior staterooms will be done in a royal blue felt, with white walls & stained wood trim.

The cockpit railings that you are referring to, I assume the bridge deck, let me know if I’m wrong, are cut only where the gates & entrance to the owners quarters. The deck that crossed over the doorway for the owners quarter was removedand will not be put back, but for the gates, they are not cut yet. I still have add a thin wood strip over each gate where there is a small noticeable gap and smooth in. Once that is done, I have to make boxes for the gate that will match the depth of the wall and install. They have to be done so that the gate can still swing open without rubbing against the deck wall so they must be tapered. Then I can cut the railing to free it from the deck, sand excess and epoxy it to the top of the gate and newly formed box extension. Then the aluminum sheeting will be installed for the wall, gate & storage door cover.. I hope that makes sense. So, on the gate, they don’t swing up, but swing out as part of the gate.

Hmm, maybe I will find some free time to finish the storage doors, gates & mount the aluminum walls. It shouldn’t take me that long. I have to steal some time from other projects. Once I steal the time I will knock out the job and post it here.

Hi Butch, I am glad that you are feeling a bit better and I hope that your heart becomes stronger than ever!
I agree with the Joe and Whitewolf, post your tow truck here if you are inspired! I would also like to see it. I was thinking about investing in a truck to pull Dauntless. As of a few days ago, Dauntless comes in at 17LBS without the interior or the heavy gear that will be installed. I am estimating that she will come in around 30 LBS when she is ready to be slipped into the drink. So I was thinking about custom making a trailer and get the Tamiya 18 wheeler rig to pull it. I actually saw full sized trailers that were used to carry PT boats that I would use as a template to duplicate one for Dauntless. It would be such a cool way to get her from the parking lot to the lake, and would be easier on my back! So….posting a tow truck is relative to the overall conversation..

It is good to see you guys active over here & I wish you all HAPPINESS & the VERY BEST of HEALTH!

-Rich.

Dang! For some reason I stopped getting emails when new messages are posted to this thread, so I've missed out on quite a bit. Great to see it's still full of activity! Thinking of floating my Dauntless at the local pond before it gets clogged up with prop-stopping vegetation... will post pics if it happens. Smooth sailing to all!

I will put pictures on this post, just as soon as it finished with regional finals in june. It is still winning first place awards, and its six todate.
Monday I will take pictures of my canoe I built out of wood planks then sanded to shape. There is a picture of it on my build-Butchs deepv 60 build log, in the beginning some where.
But will take close ups Monday.
My wall is full of awards from veterans contests, and proud of it.

Been a little busy lately though I did decide to complete the hull for the most part.
You can see the areas there on the side where I have removed the rectangular dowels,
didn't quite measure them out right with the curve so I will have to buy more.
Attaching them down from every direction has proven to be a task.

I'm on this page over here also. Thanks.

Rich (and all):

Sorry for the lag on the pics, but the lungs decided to clog up again, and its leaving me really tapped out. I'm lucky to be able to stay awake long enough to do my driver job for the idiot nephew.

Then there is trying to get ~something~ water-ready, as the local club is probably floating the gear already, and the Spring Auction is this coming week. I'm trying to concentrate on the Carina (Graupner 20" cruiser) as it'd be the easiest to finish and look decent. It has a styrene hull w/ wooden superstructure, and fine detailing can be added later to make it look better. The Lindberg PT would look tacky w/o its gear & weaponry, and horrific with a bad paint job. The 'Shark' mini-sub needs detailed sealing work (better left for post-Iron infusion time) and the Dumas 'American Enterprise' is not fully stripped so I can't start resealing it yet (not to mention its cabin/superstructure needs work too)

As for the Dauntless:

I'm hung up on the chine-sanding. Blasted 'Mouse' sander is pitiful for the job, so I'll have to do it by hand. The basswood dust isn't fun on the allergies even with a mask, so I've gotta get a nice day outside when a light breeze will carry it away. Also going to use those new open-weave sanding 'sheets' I snagged at Princess Auto. They are basically an open weave coated with abrasive - anyone else tried 'em? Looks like an odd cross between sandpaper and a file.

Thats it for now, will take more pics and get 'em all up later this week.

Hi Eclecticos,

Welcome back! As you move along, don’t hesitate to chime in & join us. We like progress pictures!

Hi WhiteWolf,

It seems like you have too many coals in the fire! OK, so you have Carina, Dauntless, PT boat and American Enterprise that all need work. For me it sounds like a lifetime of work. Surely concentrate on getting Carina running, but make sure you do a build log on this site. Dauntless is not a quick build boat so peck away at it between the Carina build. At least when Carina is ready, you will have something to sail this year and then go back to Dauntless and the other boats.

Hi WhiteWolf,

I epoxied the thin wood strip in place on each side near the gate. (see picture) They are the only two strips not painted. It is going to be those strips that are going to join that part of the deck to the gate along with the 1/2 vertical extensions that will be underneath to give the gates the proper depth. They will be tapered similar to a car door. (This is the only reference that makes sense.)

-Rich.

PS sorry guys, sometimes I make small spelling errors & don't notice until after It is posted so I go back & edit.

Hi WhiteWolf,

Continued....

When the gates are done, they will have enough space inside to add a simple but reliable locking sytem. Each gate will be able to lock in place and be unlocked to swing open. Before I add the alumunim cover, I will have the details worked out.

Hi Kennyach,

Welcome aboard!

Dauntless should have one small two sided instruction sheet and two large blueprint sheets. If you have them, you are good to go.

There is a great deal of information in this forum so browsing through these pages are a great way to get acquainted with this vessel.

If you have any questions, we are here.

-Rich.

Kennyach,

Contact Dumas & let them know that you just bought Dauntless and you are missing the large blueprint sheets that should have been supplied with the kit.

If you bought it from a reputable dealer like Towerhobbies, MACK Products, ETC they might send them to you free of charge, but if you bought it from E-bay, estate sale, ETC they will charge you for them.

Once you get the plans, then match all of the materials with them to make sure everything is there. Missing items are another thing Dumas is famous for.

Good luck!

-Rich.

Hi Kennyach,

I just saw your edit.

Because you bought it from E-bay, you are going to have to pay for a set of plans through Dumas. A few pages back, Whitewolf had the same problems from an E-Bay kit. If you are missing pieces of wood, Dumas will charge you for them as well.

Good luck!

-Rich.

Kennyach:

If you need the itemised die-cut sheet/loose wood inventory sheet (which Dumas says comes with it, but NEVER does) and the text step-by-step instructiuons, lemme know. I have them stored, and can e-mail them to ya. Seeing as dumas will want to charge you for them when they should have supplied them with the d*maned kit in the first place, I have NO qualms about e-mailing 'em free to anyone who needs 'em.

As for the 'BluePrints' they aren't really blueprints. You couldn't cut & build the kit from scratch with 'em if you had them, as they are more build diagrams than blueprints. I'd offer to send those too, but the things are too big for my scanner, and I've had items of similar size scanned, and they run $20 @ for that size. Easier to just buy 'em off Dumas.

I could take a picture of the diagrams that you should have if that helps... but I ~did~ scan the small die-cut (DC) sheet layouts from the edge of the build sheets, so you can ID the sheets (the stampings of the DC #'s on the wood aren't very good)

Anything else?
