Good lookin' out WhiteWolf!

Hi Kennyach, I don't think you were taken by e-bay but more like you were taken by Dumas. Dumas is notorious for leaving things out of the package but they will only honor the customers from authorized sellers as mentioned earlier. So, if a third party person happens to have the kit and sells it on the bay, the buyer is stuck with it if there are missing parts regardless if it has ever been opened or not. This is because Dumas may assume that it was just an old used kit that someone opened, lost parts, lost interest and decided to sell.

In a nutshell, Dumas does not want the responsibility.

It is not so bad because when you have everything you need, you are off and buildin'.

Come to think of it,

When I bought the kit 11 years ago, the top half of the hull deck was missing and most of the fittings were smashed. I received the kit in early to mid June (the latest) and did not start until July 2nd. I was so mad because I could not wait to get started. Luckily I bought it from TowerHobbies & Dumas honored the mess up and sent me the parts for free.

Kenny:

Naw, the Dumas was never supplied with half the claimed 'documentation' and even then, I don't think Dumas packs half their kits well, and bits get left out. I've talked to 4 Canadian suppliers, and they say once current stock sells out, apart from popular kits, they aren't gonna bring any more of the sh*t in.

And looking at the castings, they are rather poor in themselves. I'll probably be trying to replace/handcraft all the bollards and chocks as the ones I've got all look as if the mold halves were off a millimetre or two when they poured 'em.

At least you dinna bag a kit that had been stripped of its whole lower hull... and left with only the superstructure/cabin. Then again, I got the drive kit with the cabin, and when I got a partial refund from the seller of $75 (for a mis-represented sale) it almost covered the purchase of the missing hull die-cuts. It was still a good deal as I got the kit at less than list, WITH a fittings packet (poor as they are) and a full drive kit, PLUS a spare stuffing-box & shaft.

You sure you don't want the plan-scans to match the die-cuts to the inventory sheet? They total just over 4 meg, and I could send them in small groups if you have a mail quota limit. That or zip 'em up with PKZip and make them auto-unpack.

Hello Boat Fans;

After scolding out my 21 year old daughter for going onto a bad site, and crashing my computer two weeks ago. Had her buy me the new software, and back up and running.

The wrecker I scratch built, has just won for the 48 th time in first place, and now it is off to the regional finals.

Butch

Hi Kennyach,

Great looking pictures!! I have always liked the PT Boat! Dauntless has a modified PT boat hull so building the hull will be similar to the PT with the exception to a slightly different approach to the bow and transom.

Hi Butch,

Congrats on you winning streak with the wrecker & have fun with the regional finals! I'm sure you will do great! I am rootin' for you!

-Rich.

Hi Kennyach,

Dauntless's hull, although it is much like a PT boat, is more proportioned than the PT hull. This refinement allows Dauntless to sit much higher on the water than a PT especially in the mid to stern area. Because the hull is so floaty, there is no need to make it really light, the added ballast is always welcome on Dauntless.

Try to use a balsa that is closely matched to the mahogany ply. If you decide to replace some pieces with balsa on one side, just replace the same pieces on the other side so that it does not throw off the hulls balance.

-Rich.

Gotta agree with Rich here...

Having had to add over TWO KILOS of ballast (thats 4.5 lbs) plus two motorcycle batteries to the finishes American Enterprise kit (comparable to the Dauntless at 52") I suggest you DON'T replace the plywood with balsa unless parts are too damaged to repair.

I agree, the PT-109 needed balsa planking, I built one of it myself, and ended up thinned-epoxy-coating the hull, then ripping out all the frames to lighten it. I still barely made the water line, and I've yet to meet anyone that got the transom plate dead-square. Were I to go there again, I'd probably balsa it from the get-go, and drill lightening holes in all the framing.

You're going to build a 1/48 scale from the Dauntless 'plans'? Thats only gonna come out a foot long. I'd have thought a 1/32 would be a bit better, and yes, I'd plank in balsa at either of those two smaller scales, for sure. I was tempted to go smaller, but this kit was a steal (even after buying the missing hull)

I ~think~ ya mean a mock-up, don't ya? Mop up is when you have a bad mistake with the band saw or table saw.

I've only ever succeeded with an X-acto, Olfa (box-knife) and drill bit, and its luckily never been mop-up level, though that #11 X-acto and my right index finger came close. I slashed it to the bone on the thumb-side, luckily dinna hit any muscles/tendons. Almost needed stitches though 'cause it was just over an inch long! Then again the one across my right kneecap was almost 2 inches, but shallow and luckily dinna bleed much. And it ~is~ on topic, 'cause I was working with the Dauntless at the time!

WhiteWolf,
not quite accident prone

ARRGG...

I hate my camera. Now the rotten beast won't release any of the pic's I've taken cause it won't interface with my computer! I'm gonna have to fork over a few bills to get a USB xD card reader (probably one that reads CF as well, for my Canon PowerShot G2's card) to salvage the pics.
