Vintage my butt.

The box hasn't changed since that time, so it could have been shipped from dumas last year and no-one would be the wiser. Then again, long as it sells for under the $140 that most stores are asking for the kit, its a deal.

Thanks for the heads up though...

Kenny,

Thats just a little ABS rowboat. You could probably order it from Dumas if you wanted it, its tagged as a 'life boat' (skiff - ABS) with no part #, and the 'decking' for it is on DC 19. It usually is placed on the deck aft of the bridge cockpit, right-side up with a tarp over the interior like most lifeboats.

Looking at the posted image of the front quarter image of the Dauntless at speed, the profile of the lifeboat looks different than the one supplied. The one on the Dauntless appears similar to most shipboard lifeboats, rounded at both ends. The supplied one looks like a fishing dory, with a flat rear for mounting an outboard motor. Anyone agree with my observations?

Hi captains,

The skiff can probably be ordered from Dumas OR you can find a better quality wooden lifeboat in a similar scale.

I agree with Whitewolf, there are some small differences between the skiff that was on the full sized Dauntless and the one provided with the kit. In time, those differences will probably come to light.

Does anyone have a copy of the blueprints to e-mail to Kennyach? I remember them being passed around at some point.

-Rich.

Hi Guys,

Somewhere in the thread I thought I read that the hull for the Dauntless was the same as the Pt boats.  I can't find it now and I have a chance to pick up at a good price a Dumas fiberglass 48" Pt hull.  I know the lenghts will not be the same but I feel it might be worth looking into.

By the way Kennyach I have your plans ready and in a envelope all I need is an address.

Joe

Hi Joe,

I have been thinking the same thing! Has anyone done anything to their Dauntless? Is anyone sailing a Dauntless these days? Come on guys!

I am revving up to continue on Dauntless. In the upcoming weeks, there should be some progress pictures coming from the ol' shipyard! There will be many interesting details coming in the next segment.

Here is a short video I found to share with you guys! It is not Dauntless related, but still nice & nautical.

Hey Gang !

Well, I heard back from the National Veterans Creative Arts Show for 2009, and my scratch built tow truck has taken first place in all fifty states. This October, they are sending me and my wife to San Antonio, Texas. To be as one of the honored guests, and they are paying for the whole week long stay-eats-and two way flight for two.
I plan to take my digital camera, and will post some pictures afterwards.
Also, will be posting to my site this Saturday afternoon, after I started up my boat project, and fabricating the upper deck.

Butch

Congrats Butch,  That is fantastic!

Hi Joe, Yes, Dauntless's hull is a take on the PT boat hull with some minor differences. The top bow on Dauntless is round so that the deckhand has a place to stand whereas on the PT it came to a point at the bow. This is due to the sunken cockpit forward the forecastle on Dauntless. On the PT, the crewman could easily walk to the bow when casting an anchor, whereas on Dauntless, the deckhand needed a place to stand B/cause the cockpit was in the way.   Also, Dauntless's hull is more proportioned than a PT boat hull. The PT boat had a narrow transom, but the hull was very wide 3/4 forward. The result was the rear of the PT's were known to sit deep in the water. Dauntless on the otherhand, being proportioned, had a wider stern thus sitting much higher on the water with less drag when underway.

You can use a PT hull for Dauntless. It would not be totally historically correct, but nonetheless you could easily get away with it and still look good. One level of concern would be the PT boat stern and the cockpit aft on Dauntless. On PT boat models, I believe the aft decking is watertight, but on Dauntless, the cockpit (or lazarette) may make the hull a bit more vulnerable to water spilling into it when going in reverse or sitting in choppy water. So all you would have to do is try to keep some of the weighty gear away from the stern and it should not be an issue.

One other thing: I don't think the cabins will be plug and play on the PT hull. There will have to be some modifying to do on the top hull deck to get the cabins to fit, but it will take less time than building a Dauntless hull...That is for sure.

I hope this helps you a bit further.

-Rich.

Hi Butch,

I checked it out. Wow, that work is very detailed! I like how he created his own mold before making the chopper. I always liked the helicopter from that old TV show Airwolf. It was the Bell222. One of these days i'd like to tackle one.

Off the subject a little, but I went shopping @ M.A.C.K. products & picked up some goodies for Dauntless. I am going to push a solid day or two into Dauntless over the 4th of July weekend. I will post pictures.

Hi Captains,

Update: I was able to get some work done to Dauntless over the long weekend. A while back, I made up some shaft supports for the bottom of the hull. I still had to go back, sand and even them out. It was not called for in the plans, but I personally thought it would look good to have them so I went ahead and did it. The job is completed, but it took more time than I wanted to spend on them.

I installed the new brass shaft struts on the bottom of the hull. Like the dumas ones, they should be bolted in place. The only problem is I planned to have a battery installed in the same place where the bolts enter the hull. I decided to take another route and just epoxied the struts in place. Epoxy was also filled around the struts and all I have to do is sand them and they will be good to go.

The next step is painting the bottom of the hull but I have to get the water cooling ironed out so I am open for suggestions.

What are your ideas on getting the water cooling to blast out of the cooling/exhaust pipes like on the original Dauntless? All ideas are welcome!!

-Rich.

Rich:

Sorry I've not gotten my pics up yet, but my energy level has been garbage lately. I either burned thru the iron infusion, they dinna give me enough, or I just dinna absorb it as well as I used to. That or the lethargy is caused by something else. Then add to that the build-up of the Carina (cruiser), SeaJet (seadoo), and repairs to Theodore Tugboat (custom tug bought at club auction), and finishing the hull strip on the American Enterprise, and its all bits and pieces here and there being done. I missed a great deal on some 12v 9Ah batteries at Princess auto... ($15 a pop) and settled for a couple of 12v 3.5 Ah ones at $10 (wasn't gonna pay $25 for 5Ah)

As to the exhaust ports, heck, if you're using the water cooling for the motors and/or ESC's, go for it. I'd recommend using a booster pump to maintain flow instead of relying on just water pressure to feed the flow. A small Sullivan fuel pump at $12 has lots of flow even at 4.8 volts (its what I'm gonna use for a water cannon pump) Anmd if you wanna get the 'steamy' effect in there, try those cheap Heng Long smokers from the R/C tanks I mentioned a while back. www.RCCommand.com in the US has 'em cheap, or for fellow Canucks, www.MatoMart.com here in Canada.

As for the struts... why not just drive the bolts in from the outside, then shave 'em off flush inside the hull? Gives the mounts some lateral anti-shear strength, right? Or add a thin aluminum plate threaded for the bolts on the inside... tapping some thin tempered sheet aint too hard, if you have even that small amount of space.

WhiteWolf

PS: still dunno if I dare soak the side/aft hull panels to get that queer compound curve... thoughts on that? I have no steaming facilities, its soak 'em, cutting 'em partway thru, or toss 'em and use the balsa sheeting (this is most tempting)
