Hi Boatwrights;
I recieved my props and couplings from Tower Hobbies yesterday. I drilled out the 3/16" Dumas motor couplings with a #8 drill bit and the couplings fit the Graupner 700 BB motor shafts perfectly. One step closer to the lake. Chuck

Pusar,

What is your average runtime on your Dauntless with the Astro 25's? Also how fast is it going? I want to get some ideas for my yacht. When i built my Dauntless, i used the Dumas Pittman setup using 2 12v motors on 2 Dumas speed controls running independently.. I am now in the process of putting a full scale interior in my boat and considering changing motors for additional speed.. As i move along with this project, i will post pics as well..

Very nice work, what is the sailboat in the background?

Don M.

12skipper -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (1/23/2007 4:12 AM)

Hi; The boat in the background is an America's Cup Racer "Yankee". She is about 8' long and should weigh aprox. 65# when ballasted. The class limits the mast height to 10'. I may post some photos on the sailboat site. Thank you for the kudus about the "Dauntless". Chuck

Loyal Hanna Dockyard Company has a solution to the varying shaft sizes. The solution they sell is a "universal" universal joint which is quite unique.

I tried re drilling brass universal joints without success. I found it impossible to get the new hole centered, creating off center vibration which you DON'T want at high speeds.

Thanks AZ, I looked on their website and can't seem to find what you are referring to, can you elaborate? Thanks again.

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/7/2007 7:29 PM)

Is anyone out there detailing the interior of their Dauntless? I am at the stage where i am working on the interior from S&S sketches and interior drawings. So far, i am making the furniture in the main cabin. I made the Sectional, serving table, locker, stairs from bridge and the chart table. Tonight i start on the seating area on the starboard side. nothing is detailed yet, i am concentrating on making all furniture, then i will go back and detail each piece.

mcomp93 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/20/2007 9:08 AM)

Hi, im also a Dauntless owner. As a owner i am disapointed to see the real Dauntless rotting away! I wish as a group we could buy her and restore her. The location of the Dauntless is so far away, and all of us owners live so far apart! witch makes this just a dream! [:o]

Hi Mcomp93;
Iowa is a long way from the gulf stream.

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/20/2007 3:03 PM)

In my opinion, the best thing to do with the real Dauntless would be to contact the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut and see if they are willing to pick her up. If so, try to get a collaboration between the owner and Mystic to donate her to them. They have a full time staff that restores historical vessels and use them as museum pieces as part of their huge collection which is also one of the biggest in the US. Dauntless has many great qualities not only as a very powerful S&S craft, but also she was built and used by LSR, she had many of the elite onboard, such as former presidents, the Rockefeller family, a Princess and more. There is a lot of info scattered around the internet illustrating this vessel in LSR's posession.
Dauntless had a very Rich history that should be preserved for future generations.

*It would also be beneficial to the owner because the donation would be tax deductible.

A huge selling point for Dauntless is that she was built and used by LSR, she had many of the elite onboard, such as former presidents, the Rockefeller family, a Princess and more. I also found an article that some of the first color photos ever shot was onboard Dauntless during the experimentation phase with Kodak. The owner once dropped a line and said something that the Dauntless played a role in the Cuban missle crisis, but did not give detail.

Coming in on this topic, firstly Don, thats definitely looks like the Dauntless on sat images, how long did that take you to find? :) Secondly, I'm wondering does mystic regularly go out and recover boats such as this, I know they restore them, but this looks like an especially risky/expensive recovery, due mostly by the location. I don't really know if you can tow such a craft across the gulf stream, seems more suitable to either use a drydock transport vessel or refit the boat to operation in the Virgin Islands. If you towed is, there would be a huge risk involved, as a child me and my family tried going to the caribean but decided against it, due to the unpredictability of those waters. A big question is whether the hull is intact and how thick it is, warm salt water cannot be good for an aluminum hull. It is unfortunate it grounded way out there and I'm betting the owner said, man how am I going to get this repaired out here and furthermore, how much is it going to cost to salvage off the beach. The running gear has to be completely shot and like I said who know if there's holes. If we were serious about taking this idea of recovery to mystic, I believe we should think this out further before anyone contacts them. As a group contact we might get more sway. We need to find out everything we can about the boat. Probably finding the owner would be the best route, not quite sure how you do that.

I'm thinking the course of action if recovery happened, would be drag the boat out, attach airbags tow it out to see to a dry dock transport and run straight to mystic, I cannot imagine how much this would cost alone, besides the restoration. I'm not trying to burst potential bubbles, but I wouldn't be surprised if they say no, it just may cost too much.

BTW, beautiful models guys, it is a very classy ship, that leaves no wonder to why you'd want it restored.

mcomp93 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/20/2007 6:09 PM)

Thank you Rich404 and Quicksilver for the info. i agree with quicksilver about contacting the owners first before contacting Mystic. It would have to be drydocked shipped to florida. which would be expensive for one average person, but as a group i think it could be done. my next step will be to locate and contact the owners. ill let you guys know how it goes.

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/20/2007 6:19 PM)

I totally agree that it would be a very expensive salvage. And again, we do not know her actual condition (doesn't look good from the photo) I think working on my model Dauntless is enough for me..

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/20/2007 7:33 PM)

MComp, the owner once had a website that had lots of info on him and his hobbies. Dauntless bieng one of them. I remember him posting a pic of the boat at anchor in St. Croix and was in the process of restoring her. Dauntless was in primer at the time, not very different from today. His name is Bill, wife is Jill. I tried to contact him to get some interior pics of Dauntless and his site was no longer available.
I do also know that a large storm ravaged St. Croix in 98 or 99 that devastated a great deal of that island. I would not be surprised if Dauntless is grounded as a result of that storm.

If you are considering the salvage of Dauntless, perhaps go on vacation in St. Croix and evaluate her while you are there. Once concluded, you can get a nice tan and send us all some detailed pics of Dauntless, in and out. For me it would be long awaited. : )

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/21/2007 2:42 PM)

My goal is to make this yacht as detailed as possible. The engine room will be functional although will be electric motors. Doors & hatches will be functional, each room will also be lighted as well. My yacht will not be called Dauntless, but will be named Majestic. Her spirit will be Dauntless indeed.

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/21/2007 2:50 PM)

MComp 93,

I remember when i joined the front of my Dauntless, it sure had it's challenges. especially with the front bottom hull planking bieng pulled to the keel....Good times....

Rich404 -> RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless (2/21/2007 4:06 PM)

Don, i also ran across that info about a month ago when doing some research, i am not sure if the listed owners are related to the guy named Bill, or if he sold it since.
