*shakes head like a cartoon* I'm finding this more and more unbelievable now.

It now appears that the doctors in charge of me on the ward did ~not~ notify ANY of my specialists as I'd been led to believe! Now I'll have to double-check all these statements by doctors about 'whom-said-what'. If they don't like it, they can stuff it - you know where, right? I will NOT be lied to, by commission or omission, and if I catch someone at it, there is hell to pay.

The good news is that the central line is going back in Friday morning. Very re-assuring, but the wastage?? The time and materials to take out and now replace a central line that was by that time it was removed essentially dis-infected by the antibiotics dispensed; a weeks' supply of TPN fluid-supplies that I refused Wednesday night, that will have to be placed because I was under the impression I'd not be getting a replacement so fast... I'm just glad its not out of MY pocket (thats the ONLY good point in all this)

Never let yourselves believe the Canadian system of medical care is so much better, guys... because it is as flawed in ways you cannot imagine.

I'm just glad I'll be back on normal track by Monday... and yea, I've not forgotten the promised pics. Will get to them right after I heal up from the 'replacement' procedure.

Thanks Lee!

Hello Captains,

I will be on vacation from work for the next two and 1/2 weeks and will be focusing much of my energy on Dauntless. My goal is to get as much done on the cabins as possible. I typed up an order of importance so that I can make the most of my time. Just about all of my time will be focused on painting and detailing the entire exterior cabins which is mostly in the detail phase.. (Plus painting the interior portion of the removable cabins)

If I can pull this off in 2 weeks, this would be awesome.

So now, I am gearing up to push weight!

Wish me luck!

-Rich.

Hi Dauntlessfan,

My thoughts exactly!

Dauntless captains,

Today was a busy day at the shipyard.

The new supports for the bridge deck were epoxied in placed & filled. Afterwards I sanded them even. Tomorrow I have to go back & fill & sand that area again, then that should do it, it will be ready for paint.

The other day, I picked up the carpeting for Dauntless. There will be 2 colors used, blue and grey. The grey will be for the bridge deck and exterior cockpits and the blue will be for staterooms. The fabric is felt.

As you can see in the pictures, I made up a capstan for the bow as well, but it was a few weeks ago. I picked up some wood 1/2" dowels at Michaels craft store and made it up. The design is simple, but I added a screw into it so that it will have a very strong connection to the bow. The only "issue" is that it now seems too close to the newly added pennant flag mast so I might move it back a bit.

I had to take a stab at making the pennant flag mast. I have seen different pictures of it but none were clear enough to get exact details so I decided to create my own. I started with a wood dowel, 1/8" eyelet, a piece of mahogany and some epoxy.

I drilled into the top of the dowel just deep enough to slide in the metal eyelet. Once the eyelet was in, I cut a piece of mahogany to be thinner on top and flare as it goes to the bottom. I think this was consistant with some of the pictures I have seen.
Next, I epoxied both the eyelet and the mahogany to the dowel.

Once the epoxy was dry, I wrapped the mast in mighty putty and began shaping it. Once the mighty putty became solid, I started sanding it to create the final shape.

After it was shaped, I went back and looked at some pictures to see where the cut out would be for the light and sketched it onto the mast with a pencil, then cut using a saw & metal file.

Finally, I painted it gold. (I just picked a shade that resembles brass more than it did gold)

My only dilemma is: was the light red & green for a navigation light or was it a clear anchor light? What do you guys think? Once we have come up with some kind of conclusion I will either use red & green or clear plexiglass to finish it along with a painted verticle support or 2.

I drilled the hole on the deck where the mast will go & it fits very snug. Once I finish up the final details, it will be epoxied in place. The dowel that fits in the mast will be 1/8" diameter, teak stain wood & I will make arrangements to have a custom pennant made to fit. I have a list of yacht clubs the yacht was associated. The pennant w/ teak dowel will be easily removable for transport.

Well, that is all for now. It is late & gonna do it all again in the morning.

-Rich.

Rich, Very cool pics.  What you are doing with your Dauntless is what I like about building models.  When you build a model, You don"t have to stay inside the lines and build the model exactly to the plan.  When I build a model and use some of my own ideas it makes me me feel like I have have a little artist in me.  Keep up the good work!  Mike

Whitewolf, In response to your comment about the Canadian healh care system. First of all I"m about as conserative as you can get. But, here is what happend to me. I retired from GM on 10-31-08 with full group health care coverage, ( as was promised to me for the last 31 years).  I got a letter from GM last month informing me that effective 1-1-2010 I will no longer have vision, dental, perscription or hearing coverage. Also, I have a $5000.00 deductable every year before they will pay any insurance at all.  I'm sure your health sysyem has it"s problems but at this point I would take it in a heart beat, no pun intended.  Anyway, I"m glad to hear that you are feeling better. Mike

To All Captains

My family would like to wish you all the best of a safe holidays.

Going into Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital for neck surgery Dec. 9,2009. Been getting massive headaches, so had to put my boat on the side lines for now.
But trust me when I say, when I get back on my feet. I will be putting all the plans in my head, onto the boat and move forward.

Great work Rich & Happy Holidays!

Butch

Hi Mike,

Thanks! Yeah, I like to get creative and very detailed with the model. I enjoy building it up frame by frame until it is in a mini version of a full sized yacht. It is half the fun!

Hi Butch

I wish you all the best for your upcoming surgery! Please check in from time to time so that we know you are ok. I wish you and your family a happy & warm thanksgiving!

Feel better!

-Rich.

Hi Captains,

It has been another action pact day at the shipyard. Today, I sanded the supports near the gate which are ready for touch up paint. Then, I moved onto the water traps for the vents. They were made from scratch & installed. Then, I moved onto the deck storage doors and walls, which I am still working on, but here are the pictures in the next few posts.

Below is the pennant mast on the bow.

Here are the water traps for the engine room louvers. If water splashes into the vent, it is designed to just run back out of the vent. The water trap is taller than the vent and has an additional support on top to deflect water. This is so that the engineroom fan does not suck in the water, just air.

This was a lot of work for something that will be sealed behind a wall, although it works behind the scenes, keeping water out of my engine room while keeping it cool is a big thing!

Here are those pictures.

Finally,

Here are the storage doors & part of the aluminum wall. These will go forward under the bridge shelter on port and starboard sides. I still have to make up the wood frame for the doors and install. The portions of the wall that were cut away will be epoxied to the deck wall supports & the seams will be filled. Then, I will put on door knobs, and use a magnet strip on both the door and interior wall to keep it in place. The magnets will be from old refrigerator magnets.

Here are those pictures. I will continue tonight & tomorrow until complete. There are still 2 additional storage doors to be made but they will be narrow.

That is all for now!

I love having the time to push into this awesome model!

-Rich.

Dauntless captains,

Here are the pictures from today. I did some wood framing on the back wall. This is part of the foundation for the seating area. Most of the day was cutting aluminum and getting it fixed in place. I still have a small open area on both port and starboard side which will be a narrow but tall storage doors. Once the doors are on and the seams are sanded even I am going to line the inside of the storage areas with a thin black plastic covering on the wall and put a shelf inside as well.

Before I closed up the aft wall, I did some graffiti which is a dedication to all of you!

I hope that all of you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

-Rich.

Hello Rich,
In answer to your question about the Bow Light, if you can get ahold of the book:Piloting,Seamanship and Small Boat Handling by Charles F. Chapman,M.E. Published by Motor boating this will help with the lights. Chapter 2 indicates that the bow light showing through 20 points is an option. The RED and Green lights are on the cabin only and showing through 10 points. The stern light should show through 32 points or all the way around the horizon.

Have a fine Thanksgiving,

Chuck

Rich:

12skipper has his details good, but its a bit confusing if you have to convert 'points' to compass degrees. And he forgot to mention the bow light is plain white. I googled 'bow light color' and got this very simple but very explanatory site:

http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/060199tip5.htm

0 degrees is directly ahead, 180 being directly aft, 90 degrees directly to starboard, 270 directly to port

Bow light - white , visible for 225 degrees, from 247.5 through 112.5
Port Light - red , visible for 112.5 from 247.5 to 0 degrees;
Starboard light - green, visible from 0 degrees to 112.5 degrees;
Stern light - white, visible from 112.5 to 247.5 degrees.

This gives you clear indicators: white alone indicates you are viewing the craft from the stern; white plus red/green means you're ahead of the craft to port (red) or starboard (right) of it. Due to the angles, you should never see a sidelight with the stern light, always with the bow light.

Make sense now?

Hi Chuck,

I am on fire to get as much done in the next few weeks as possible. Hopefully there will be much more posted in the upcoming weeks. My biggest goal is getting the cabins painted grey & white. There are so many little things that need to be wrapped up before I can complete that goal. The painting must be done before the temerature drops too much so I have to get on it.

Hi Whitewolf & Chuck,

Thank you for that information! This is exactly what I need!

Hi Mike,

Good luck on the sanding....It is a looong road!

Hi Captains,

I took a couple of days off to entertain for thanksgiving. Now I am continuing on the bridge deck. The walls & doors are installed, so I am now filling & sanding the seams so that they disappear. Today, I am going to spend the day to try to finish it so I can move on. Soon, I will empty my camera here.

-Rich.

Hello Captains.

I was searching thru Ebay and there is a Dauntless looking for a new home if anyone is interested. She looks pretty clean to me.

ThanX Leo!

Dauntless Captains,

There has been lots done since yesterday. The next few posts will go over some of those items.

This one was the least important, but it was something to do while epoxy was drying. I made up a the pole for the pennant. I wanted the top of the pole to be seen from the bridge so I had Herc hold a wood beam until the right height was found. Then I marked it with a pencil & cut.

Here are those pictures.

Cont'd

Next up was the bridge shelter corners. I have been dreading this for a while, but it is time. They needed to be filled since the shelter was cut so I used mighty putty to fill the corners so that they have the same curve as the exterior corners. I filled it & sanded, then went back to fill again one last time. All I have to do is sand it and it will be done. I will have this completed today.

I am currently working on this. It is an addition to the bridge shelter. I saw this in some photos so it was time to add it. In my opinion the finished product will make the shelter look better. I like the fact that the back part of the shelter was also streamlined. Once it is painted it will look neat. I am going to have this finished today.

Cont'd & final

Lastly, these are tabs than I added to the shelter. These were also on the original shelter so to stay consistant they were also added. I made the pair together so they are identical. When the epoxy dries, the sides will be sanded and they will be complete.

Here are those pictures.
