Here is another "Dauntless" tid bit i found on the web.

As the story goes, Rockefeller discovered Caneel Bay in 1952 when he sailed into the magnificent cove known as Caneel Bay Plantation Resort on his yacht, Dauntless. It was owned by the Virgin Islands Tourist Company, and only had a few bungalows scattered on the beach. The entire island population was less than 400.

Delighted with the pristine, crystal-clear water and undeveloped land, Rockefeller bought 240ha, intent on establishing a national park alongside the resort. In 1955, he added 2023ha for the park which, over time, grew to more than 5665ha.

Dear Dauntless Captains,

Recently, i framed and planked the Aft cabin ceiling that will eventually be set in place. I am still awaiting details from Bill for pics so that i can go forward and make cuts in the ceiling and wire for lighting. Also, the weather is better so i was finally able to prime the cabins so that i can fine tune them as well. Here are those pics.

**Also, note the curved corners on the Bridgedeck shelter.

Rich.

Haven't been able to get on the water yet this season. But just bought new batteries today. In the meantime, here are a few of the details I've added to mine --

The searchlight is out of my parts bin from one of my other 20 hobbies -- model railroading. I painted it white and replaced the bulb with a Mini MagLight bulb.

Horns & navigation lights are all from Mack.

Gooseneck vents are leftovers from a Midwest kit. Added these because similar vents appeared on one of the S&S drawings. Also added the exhaust vent for the Owner's Wash Room as interpreted from the S&S plans.

Made the crane just for fun. It's balsa and really delicate. I'll probably just remove it next time I break it accidentally again .

Hi Lennoxman;
I like the modifications. Could you please post some photos of the entire boat. I had to move the radar tower back about 1/2" from plan location to make room for a servo motor which drives the antenna. I am priming and spot sanding now.

Dear Dauntless Captains,

Recently, i have been continuing to work on the exterior cabins on Dauntless. Since it was last primed, i continued to sand/fill and shape the entire cover. Recently, the entire cover has been re-coated with Marine Epoxy and have been using it to coat and fill. This has been a time consuming process, but i am working toward airbrushing the entire yacht when complete. The hull has also been sanded and primed.

So far, I did not hear anything from Bill in a while, so i contacted Mystic Seaport as recommended by S&S. According to S&S, all files (with the exception of the few that are already on this forum) have been sent to Mystic Seaport long ago, hopefully, by working with them, i can obtain all the necessary information to complete this project. $30.00 later and in hopefully a week i will see what they have to offer. The person that helped me from Mystic, said that they had a lot of info on Dauntless. Hopefully, they send me info that we have not yet seen.

I will keep you posted.

-Rich.

Skipper12. Your Dauntless is coming out nice. I really like the FWD cabin windows that you put in there. I am hoping to do the same pretty soon. Looks very authentic.

Lennoxman, Your Dauntless looks great as usual! Did you get the new motors in and running yet?

Thanks.

Nah, Rich, I haven't put the new motors in yet. I still need to order the couplers. I'm wondering if my Dumas scale props would be very efficient with a high speed motor, though?

Well I've tried to upload more pictures twice and get that dreaded "Page cannot be displayed" error so I'll try again later.

Here are the pics I tried to post yesterday. And a couple captions below:

I have a PVC pipe stand I usually use for display. The "trailer" in the pics is kinda goofy and obviously not meant to be scale. But this monster trailer is sometimes a big help moving her around since the Dauntless isn't very light. With those big lawn mower wheels I've been tempted to tie a rope to the front, then back it down a slope and launch the boat "remotely"... or pull it (carefully!) back to the car after a run.

I'm sure somebody's already thought of this one: The lights get their power from a basic AA battery pack stored in the bow. A pair of springs (out of ink pens) are epoxied to an inside wall of each cabin section. When the cabin is in place, the springs contact little square plates on the hull to get power to the lights (you can see the brass plates in the pics of the innards).

I hoped to take some pics of her in the water. This area has a only a few ponds/small lakes. I grabbed a local map and went to every one of them this week. Unfortuantely, each is in a "members only" housing community or part of a summer camp full of swimming kiddos. So I don't know what I'm going to do about running it locally. We have several rivers but they are really shallow and the current is swift enough that I could lose my boat if something were to go wrong.

12 Skipper & Lennoxman,

Great to see that both of you have the bow lip on your models! I like how 12Skipper added his during the build. A good idea for anyone in the build phase!

Lennoxman, Cool trailer!, i was thinking of eventually building one when my yacht is done., It may not be very scale, but the important thing for a boat of that size and weight is that it does not take a spill while bieng pulled. Looks like you have a stable trailer, with a little bit of paint and detail, it is good 2 go.

As far as the 700 motors go, i think if the props were a tad smaller and 2 blade, it would benefit those motors as far as performance goes. the fast electric site has a lot of info on that kind of set up. Dauntless will not stand up on the water like a race boat, (You don't want that anyway) but it will get the message across that she was one mean cruiser! (if you change the prop set up, you can always unload the old props on ebay or use them on another project. But first do some testing, they may still be good.

In the next few months, i have to do some investigating of my own to see how i am going to repower my bad boy. I was thinking of astro 25 or 40's after i conclude some tests with my current pittmans. I still do not know the difference between the 2 astro's but i am not up to that yet.

Also, the pen spring idea is a good one, i am also thinking of ways to create an efficient contact plate idea for
Dauntless. Here is a thought for Dauntless: I was thinking of setting up all the switches in the main seating area in the bridgedeck. The seat will be a built in bench type against the wall. It would be set so that you lift the cushion and the switches will be neatley lined in there. The wires are going to go down and run under the floor parallel each other to the portside to a contact plate for each switch on the cover wall. The hull contact plate wires run to the battery source mounted deep in the hull. This way, you can lift off the entire cover without wires coming with it and keep the weight low in the hull..

Last night, i cut out the 2 Bridgedeck gates from 1/8" thick solid Mahogony, tonight, i have to do some minor cutting around the gate and set up 1/8x1/8 beams to fit the gates perfectly and epoxy the frames in place. i still have to do more sanding and filling around the surrounding walls. The gates (and all doors) will be mounted using music box hinges.

-Rich.

The above pics are of the sculpted main cabin and bridgeshelter. Also is a pic of the portside gate fitted into place and cut the bow moulding to eventually get ready to make and install a bowlip.

Last night, i removed the top of the Bridgeshelter because it has been impossible to get into the corners and do work. I spent weeks trying to avoid this but removing the top is the most practical way to shape the inside corners and to shape the bridgeshelter ceiling to accept the curved windshield and be correct in the final product. Last night i was able to complete more work in that area than all the time i spent trying to avoid the removal.

This kind of reminds me of the original S&S blue-print without the top, HMMMM...A hinged windshield like the original specs???

-Just kidding! (I think!) i will put the top back on, i promise...

Thanks Lennoxman,

I just heard back from Mystic, they sent me a 6 page sheet of specs for Dauntless with 100 items. I have to go through the sheets and pic out everything that pertains to this project, then get permission from S&S and if cleared go back to Mystic and obtain the info. This service is also costing me $30.00 an hour. At this point, it is worth it. i found some pretty interesting info on the sheet. Tomorrow, i will call S&S and coordinate with them. Lets see what happens. I will keep you posted.

Wow, you are one committed modeler, Rich!

I have a scan of a document that S & S gave me several years back. It's basically a hand-written list of all the the plan descriptions and corresponding plan numbers for the original yacht. I may have already emailed it to you? Not sure if it'd be of any use, since it's just a list with no illustrations. But it's an interesting piece of history none the less. Let me know if you don't have this and I'll post it here for you.

I must say it's cool that S & S even responded to my trivial requests for info on the Dauntless, given the fact that I'm in no financial position to buy one of their vessels.

When I win the lottery, I'll have to throw them some buisness .

Hi Lennoxman,

When i first signed onto this site 6 months ago, i saw that you were successful by contacting S&S so i followed suit. I was glad that they were good and sent me what they had because years ago when i started the project, i called and they blew me off. I do have the blueprints, list and the photo, i was also advised that Mystic had most of the documents and to contact them.

I have the hand written list that i obtained through S&S. It is a cool list, it is the one where all the designers initialed on each part of the vessel that they worked on. S&S actually set up another list on their site with the actual names of the designers, initials they used and date range from which they worked. I was able to put a name with the initials, thus coming up with a list of people that actually designed and built her all the way to the interior decorator.

But this list is different, it is from Mystic Seaport on all the records provided by S&S long ago. ( Apparently, Mystic archives old S&S files). Bieng that S&S is still in business, you need get actual permisssion from them (S&S) to obtain pertinent information because of copyright laws. I have to contact S&S using this provided list, select items and get approval from them to reproduce the items in archives. (100 pages of stuff on this vessel) Once S&S approves, they have to contact Mystic to approve the release. At that point, i can obtain the actual goods on the vessel.

(The $30.00 an hour is for retrieval and copies or email)

Lets see....

I also agree that S&S were good with questions, if i were to hit the lotto, i would obtain Dauntless and have S&S restore her to her original specs. Now we just have to see who hits the lotto first! lol.

I tried to upload the list, but it will not let me because it is a word document. send me your email address and i will forward it to you.

Thanks again for the kind words, my friends and family think i'm nuts for dedicating so much time into this project. Like all of us here, i like yachts, and i like detail.

-Rich.

S&S Just sank my ship!!!!

I called S&S per Mystic and let them know what i needed for this project. I checked 44 of the 100 lines pertaining to this project. In order for them to submit the request to Mystic, i would have to pay $45.00 per line which would total $1,980 + $30.00 an hour to Mystic. Ouch!!! I did not mind Mystic because they quoted me 1-2 hours max, but to get hit like that from S&S was unexpected.

Oh well, back to the drawing board, i tried...

Update,

I called S&S back simplifying what i need. I let her know that i am interested in photos only and do not need technical detail. She had 2 rendering photos which are repeats of what i already got from her in the past. (The main cabin sketch and the Owners stateroom sketch). She did inform me to go back to Mystic about a certain collection that may have photos of Dauntless. I called my contact at Mystic informed her of the collection and she found 3 pics. She will send me by mail the 3 photos and if i want them, i can order them. I will have those probably after memorial day.
