Has anyone gotten rid of the linkages between upper and lower wings for the ailerons and installed separate aileron servos in each wing?

That is my plan. 9411's in each.

Are you build the ARF or the ARC?

How hard is it to add support for the servo in the ARF?

Yes, I have the ARC version. It shouldn't be difficult to do with the ARF.

I'd start by stripping covering from the wing bay between the two ribs that have the interplane strut supports on the bottom of the top wing.

Here's a pic of my installation.

You can see there is no "top" sheeting here so you can see the servo opening and beam supports which I glued onto the sheeting from going in from the other side (which you can't really do because the wing is already covered). However, I think if I had the ARF I'd probably remove the sheeting in the area between where the beams go, then glue in the beams (leaving a 1/16" space for the sheeting to be replaced) and then replace the sheeting then cut out the servo rectangle. This way you'd avoid needing to remove any covering from the wing top surface.

It's important to get a good glue joint to the ribs AND the sheeting underneath as the sheeting locks it together and helps transfer twisting loads to the ribs which in turn go to the spar, etc (the rib bone's connected to the wish-bone, connected to the ....)

Looks like I'll have to get out my procto-dentistry tools to do that job without pulling the covering off.

Should be worth it, though.

Hey Wind Junkie,

Normally I wouldn't think twice about throwing Hitec 5955's into any/all applications requiring servos but based on the size of this plane and the surfaces I'm kind of thinking this is really a waste.

Any "recommendations" on what would be a suitable servo for the ailerons (top and bottom)?

Thx,

Bill

Bill,

Yea, I wouldn't go with 5955's either unless you elongateded the ailerons for 3D like I did, and only used one to drive 2 ailerons at once with the struts of the stock config. The 5955's too heavy strength /precision is overkill. If you don't use a separate servo for each surface, the linkage just really won't benefit from the super exacting precision that the high power digitals offer IMO.

If money is no object, I'd eliminate the struts between the ailerons and do 9411's on all surfaces (like I am doing) except for the rudder which is like a 180 oz/in servo (I forget the number, but one of the hitec digitals metal gear variety). If you dont' elongate and bevel for 3D the ailerons, you don't need the strength/precision of the 9411, so I think I'd just go with a decent $50 servo with metal gears on all ailerons and elevator halves (I didn't use the elevator joiner either-- look back to see the servos in the tail).

Remember, I haven't flown mine yet, so take all my advice witha grain of salt. It doesn't look good for the near future either as I just got a SD 33% yak from Chief coming next week. We'll have 4 of them in our club now so the Pitts (sadly) will need to take a back seat once more.

The old byron pitts's counter balanced ailerons only used one 1979 era standard servo for all four surfaces but no 3-d
