Last weekend finally I tested my electric converted pattern plane . As some of you may have read I was asking for advice since I was converting a glow pattern plane, and I wanted to know the best suggested configuration to make this. My Milenio L was originally eqquiped with an OS 140 engine, and after long deliberations with my club buddies I decided to equip it with a Hacker C50 14XL, an Acro 90 ESC and 4200 mAh Thunder Power LiPos, and this configuration weigths 4960 g, so just 40 g under the feared 5 Kg. The change was huge!!.

I tested its first 2 flights with an APC 22x12W prop..... plenty of power for this altitude, as my predictions confirmed, the electric motor delivers more power since it doesn´t suffer from less oxigen to burn as the glow engines do. The watts pulled from this motor were not impressive (2100 W), maybe because there is less air to push (less pressure at 9000 feet of altitude), but I still had 5800 RPMs. However the plane behave excellent in uplines. Downlines were other story, because I setted the ESC with 30% brake, so for me it became unconfortable to have such low speed at the exit of some maneouvers, making it quite dangerous also . Last flight I tested a 21x13W prop and it behave even better, more power was available, and less capacity used (just 2350 mAh). I have to get used to manage more the throttle curve and stick, and then maybe I can use a little more capacity to have a constant speed pattern routine. Next week I´ll try to fly without the brake setting to see if it is better for me, at least for the first flights.

I want to thank all people that helped me and all their advice, specially Chad Northeat, patternflyer, ExFokker, and of course Don Shulman. Your advice were unvaluable, thank you guys!!!.

As a conclusion electrics is definitelly a choice for high altitude pattern practice, and I believe I started a crisis in pattern society in the andean lands.... in our track to Argentina 2007 WC. I promise to post some photos next week, if everything go well.

Glad it worked out for you so well Xavier, though I would have obviously chosen a different motor and batteries... kidding I had to say something lol... those are pretty good results. The only thing you are losing performance wise when you climb in altitude is prop efficiency. I normally fly at sea level, my dad lives at 4500 msl, so when I go up there I usually have to go up in pitch with one of my planes... from a 20x13 to a 20x15 to get about the same amount of performance.

Congrats and good luck, have any pictures of your conversion and/or flying site? There are a few of us here in California that are planning on Argentina in '07, maybe our paths will cross!

Hi Tom. Thanks for your post. I promise to send more pictures of our flying sites at the moment we have 3 sites.... they are awesome with some volcanoes and high mountains in the landscape, but all above the 9000 feet of altitude. Here I have some for you to see, and this weekend I promise to take many more

Here are some more pictures of our flying sites. If you want to come you are very welcome, we love to have pattern fliers from other countries.

Thanks Steve, they really are. Do you know that those volcanos are 19.000 feet high?? Awesome right? When do you come? hahah

Hi. 5 more flights this weekend and the consumption was from 2600 mAh to 3000 mAh. I disconnected brake in my throttle curve, and it improves downlines, now are almost the same speed in up and downlines. I hope to try a 21x15 and 20x15 as Tom suggested, but I have to order and expect them here in Ecuador by 3rd week of september. I send you a photo taken with my cel camera, in a gorgeous day with Cayambe volcano far in the distance (19.500 feet high).

Have any of you tried the new TP Elite 4500 and 4600?

Congratulations, Xavier, you are the pionner in F3A electric flight in the andina region, glad to ear that all is going well, I am completely convinced that electric F3A is the way to go!! I hope in the future to change the nitro by electrons!!!
The flying fields in Ecuador are really beautiful, in general the geography of Ecuador is awesome. Last year in November, I was flying F3A and ultra light in Quito, the experience was really nice and my friends from Ecuador are great persons.
The pictures were taken in Jerusalem fliyng field in the south of Quito, the Larimar is my plane and the Milenio- light now e-milenio is the plane of my friend Xavier.

Xavier, please place son pictures of the plane, batteries, hacker instalation and so on.

Un abrazo.

Jorge

Hi Jorge Hernan. Here I include some pictures of motor installation. I have done 27 flight so far, and everything go great, hopefully it will stay this way. I have to learn to fly again since it´s very different to fly glow planes, but it's only a matter of set my brain to the new conditions, maybe in one month I´ll be in good shape again.

BTW just in case any of you are wondering.... my plane is all balsa construction!! You know Ecuador is home of balsa.. so it's cheaper and easier than composite construction.
