I agree

Water cooling might be advisable if you were to tune the engine or if you were to enclose the engine.

If you can't source cheap rubber mounts in Perth grab them off this guy from Tasmania on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/gas-engine-mounts_W0QQitemZ330082270553QQihZ014QQcategoryZ19166QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks guys, the motor is going to stay air cooled, and is going to get rubber mounted. The only mod to the engine at this stage will be a exhaust pipe to get rid of the STD muffler and get the heat away from the engine.

get a bigger carb for it if you can and you will see a big improvement in it.a walb carb has 31 mm centres to the mounting holes .if yours match you can get any of the walb carbs to fit.what sort of pipe are you using?.

I don't know what type of pipe yet, i just want something to get the heat away from the engine. The box muffler that is on it will hold the heat around the engine. As for a carb, i will leave that untill i get it going and see how it goes. I am not going to race it , it is for my son and i to muck around with. But if Bentleys is faster, then all the go fast gear will go on just to cheese him off. I am going to the hardware today to get the fiberglass kit to do all the internal joins. Will post pic soon.

Hi all, here are some more pics, all glued up and semmie sanded. Thinking of putting a sterndrive on it, i can pick one up for about $240 + prop, what do you think.

keep away from a stern drive you will lose all your power and depending which one you get the engine might not even spin it fast enough to move the boat much.stay with a normal strut and direct drive .also get a bigger carb the air intake on most weedys is tiny 8-9 mm usually id get one with at least 12 mm.i got a 167 brand new off ebay for £5.00 .if you remove the can muffler and put a home made pipe on it will be very noisy!!the can muffler should be fine in this boat theres plenty of room.as for pipes im not sure a mates fabbing me one from scratch as we speak hes using a copper bend for the header with a few mods to fit the engine.hes using a water pump to form the pipes shape not sure what this method is called (hydro forming?) but hes made bike exhausts this way.if it works he might be selling them at a later date.i should be starting my boat in the next week or so when the kids are off school as the wifes got time off too to watch em so hopefully i can get on with this thing.

Steve, the strake should have a sharp edge, not rounded. As shown water will climb around and up the side instead of breaking off. Sharp edges are the road to less drag and a faster boat.
I would save the stern drive for your next project, just seems wrong putting a $240 drive on a cost-saver hull with a weedeater

The edge was coming off any way, to make it a bit smaller, it's just how i brought it from the hardware it was the perfect shape. I have a twin rudder set up on its way from tassi (thanks john) I might still get the sterndrive for another boat. Hay Bentley wot do you recon about twin 70cc twins and sterndrives. I have one more day at home and then back to work for 9 days straight so work on the boat will stop for a while. By the time i fly back my rudder and prop will be here so i will be hiding in the shed again. Talk to you all in 10 days. Will post pics of the drive unit then.

Bentley thats true but im a full time dad so time is limited for actual building hence the reason im starting it when the kids are off school and the wifes got a week off.No jokes about been a new man either lol ,but serriously i should get started next week all been well and it wont take me long to get her done once i start.i have all the hardware ready apart from the rudder which i will make from alluminium i have here for the job.ill also need to make a ferrule from brass tube as i cant seem to get the one i need they all seem to be out of stock but its not a problem im sure i can make my own.just need to tap the tube for grub screws .
