I am going to buy an Magnum XL-180 RFS 4-Stroke for GP Giant Super Chipmunk

and I want to know about it's performance!

Anyone Who tach reading?

I have this engine in a 11lbs (5KG) Seagull Edge 78", and I am more than pleased with it. I last Tached it when still running in on the ground,(I was not able to open the throttle fully) and I got 7800 RPM on a 18X8 MAS prop, since then it has done about 15 flights and it is getting to the point where I can lean it out. I dont know for sure, but I would think it is now running at about 8200-8500RPM on that same prop.

I use 16% Klotz 200 5% nitro in it.
It will pull my Edge out of sight even at an altitude of 6000ft

Hope this helps.

I think it has more Power as a 40cc Gas engine and that at great wheight advantages.

Status: offline 		I got one for myself and here`s what I got so far, not fully broken in as it only has consumed half a gallon or so.

Fuel 0% nitro:
Menz S 18-6= 8100 rpm peaked
Volk 17-6= 8800 rpm peaked
Volk 18-6= 8000 rpm peaked

Fuel 15% nitro: Same order as as above:
8350
9100
8200

Fuel 30% nitro: Only Volk 17-6 tested so far= 9300 rpm peaked


Removed both headshims and tested on 15% nitro on Volk 17-6= 9300 rpm peaked.

Without headshims and resetting the valves the engine performed on 15% identical as it did on 30% with headshims

I guess, Your Mag180's very very good..

Some days ago, I tached my Mag180 it only has consumed a gallon.

See as below my tach....

Fuel 15% nitro Peak rpm..
MA 16-8 3-Blade = 8,000
Volk 17-6= 8,700
Volk 18-6= 8,000

So, You shown.. "Fuel 30% nitro: Only Volk 17-6 tested so far= 9300 rpm peaked"

I'm not believe How can Mag180 swing up 9,300rpm...

Status: offline 		This seems to be the case with allmost all engines we tach up here in the north, we do get very respectable numbers compared to same engines in different parts of the world. We have cold dry air up here and I guess that plays a part in the output of our engines. We don`t have any overheating or rusting problems either
My engine is branded ASP 180, but it should be the very same engine as Magnum.
Try to remove both headshims and reset the valve gaps and your engine will propably run alot stronger too, as mine did

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have also drilled the exhaust outlet of the muffler to 9.2mm. That really helps in making power. A friend of mine also have the 180 and was several hundreds rpm behind mine on the same prop. Today he too drilled his muffler and VIOLA! he got his power up to were my engine is.

Status: offline 		My friend measured thrust on the Volk 18-6 yesterday. He was running 30% nitro 23% oil, two head gaskets removed and the muffler drilled out to 9.5 mm. Measured pull on a digitale fish scale was 7.8 kilos steady. I find that quite good, I have not measured mine, but it should be the same. The engine will be tested in a 25% Edge 540 tomorrow, but already we know that it will hover at half stick

Status: offline 		Actually my friend have now changed the prop for an 18-6 as it seems to give more pull, even though rpms are quite a bit lower at 8300 rpm (he flyes an Edge 540 3-D)

Status: offline 		hi i have the magnum 180 and just ran a xoar 17x8 at 8300 on 10% but i have just found the exaust lash is way big and needs adjusting also im running a 90deg adaptor and 6" flex to the std muffler which is drilled to 9mm, Greg

we have one in my son's Cermark Edge (76 inch span), I think this setup weighs over 12 pounds, not sure,,, anyway it starts and runs great, I like it, smooth, quiet, powerful, and uses about 1oz per minute,,

Magnum Fuel 15%
APC 17x8 W
tuned at 8100 for flight,, as I remember it peaked at 8300 or 8400..

Status: offline 		I would not really on Factory Rated HP numbers,,

you can find out what you want to know here (see link) in the "Propeller power calculation sheet",, for an example use an APC 17x8W at 8100 RPMs,, keep in mind in the Air the Engine will un-load and give more Performance than on the ground..

to add, I'm sure an APC 18x6W or 18x5W would allow this Engine to Hover this Cermark Edge..

after drilling the muffler did you notice a loss in back pressure? i drilled out out a Bisson pitts muffler for all out performance i gained a couple hundred rpm...but lost vertical performance, no matter what i did with the low end it would sag..... but then again this was on a 120 ax, kinda hard to compare it to a 4 stroke
