Hey George,

We're having some problems trimming a Carden 37% YAK. It's got us boggled, so it's time for your expertise. The plane changes aileron trim in response to changes in power and speed. I don't mean do to torque when you blip the throttle. Rather, it can be trimmed neutral for level and up lines, but as soon as you power back for a down line, the plane slowly rolls right. It rolls the same direction (right) both upright and inverted, which tends to make me believe it is not a thrust or yaw issue.

Here's the oddest part...we discussed the problem with a couple other Carden YAK owners, and they all have the same aileron issue! Every YAK we encounter has the same left aileron trim in the plane, and the owners complain about changing aileron trim. In other words, when the plane is trimmed the best possible, the left aileron is down and the right up about 3/8"...which seems like a lot for an un-warped airplane. Our conclusion is it must be an aerodynamic problem unique to the YAK.

SO...do you have any idea what is going on and how we can fix it? It is not practical to change aileron trim constantly in the pattern, and we are actually considering a throttle to aileron mix to help.

Thanks! John

John,

I hope George doesn't mind if I jump in here but I'll offer something.

Peter Goldsmith wrote a trimming article for Model Aviation a little while back. It's excellent and I suggest that you take a look at it. One of the steps that he recommends is "throttle to aileron mixing". According to Peter, most aircraft will roll slightly to the right and, unknowingly, most pilots carry a small amount to aileron trim at low throttle.

He discribes a couple of tests:

1) Fly directly overhead into the wind at top of the box atlitude and at about 50-100 feet past overhad, push into a dive at idle and watch to see if the plane rolls on the downline.
2) Fly along at medium height, throttle smoothly back to idle and watch for rolling.

To fix this, he recommends a throttle to aileron mix at low throttle (assumes that you are trimming for straight and level flight at high throttle) and to make sure it takes effect gradually starting at about half stick. It's a linear mix.

Hope this is helpful. If you need the Goldsmith article and can't find it I'll see if I can find it and send it to you. Just let me know.

I got some stick time on a Carden Yak this weekend and it is an excellent plane. I'm sure you are loving it and will be even happier once you get this sorted out.

Dave Michael
