did you beat him up?

LOL Sorry about your plane, a lot of people reinforce the stab in case they input too many g's...

I originally used a TP 3S 2100 and a 480 motor. AUW was about 32 oz, and everything else is stock. I had to add tail weight to pull the cg back to the recommended cg. I then did some caculations, and found the manual is putting the cg at 20% to 25%. So I pulled out the 2100 and put in a 1320 and added a tail wheel. The cg moved 1/2" back, which is about 30% MAC.

Flys much better with the lighter wing load and aft cg. I also switched from a 11x7e APC to a 11x5.5e. It is much better. It flys like the big 33% 3D birds now! This is a much better set up for 3D, where the original, heavier and forward cg with a 11x7 prop was better for pattern.

I couldn't agree more, anyone using 2100's in this plane misses the boat completely.

I have just purchased the Extra 300 and have a 2915-6 950kv TowerPro outrunner to put in it. i am having second thoughts about it because of the weight and some of the threads that I have read about the horizontal stab breaking. Here is a https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4949#link to the motor. Can any one give me any advice about this setup. I will be using a 2100 3S1P Lipoly Pack on it as well. Just using this setup because its what I have and bought the plane because lhs said it should be fine. Any comments on it would be great appericated.

I know....I guess I was looking for some reassurance that it would still fly. I'm still new to flying and not quite good enuff yet to fly 3D. As long as it will do the pattern type flying I think that I will be ok with that for now. Maybe later (next month) I will purchase a light motor and battery pack. How should I add CF to the horizontal stab. Do I have to peel back the covering, carve out a groove in the balsa and recover it? where on the stab should I put the CF? I would think it would go under the rudder where the stab is the thinest. Is that correct? Thanks again for your insight Aflipz

scottarowe,
The Seagull Extra is a very predictable flying plane and it will fly fine with the components that you already have. I agree with others that a light setup is an improvement, but for flying pattern stuff with lower rates you will be fine.

I have not reinforced my stab and it has held up fine for the past year. I think the tail breakages occur with high power setups doing violent maneuvers.

After about a half dozen flights, my cg (reported in earlier post) is OK for pattern, but when I am ready for more 3D, I will move it to the 35% MAC, which is probably another 1/2" aft. This places the cg 1" back from the manual. This is a big difference.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have been slightly putting off my maiden flight for a couple of days now because I wasn't sure, but now I have a little more confidence. wish me luck !!!! I will try to post pics before and after maiden flight. Hopefully they will look the same.

As promised, here are a couple of pics. It survived its maiden flight. It flew really well. I thought that the big motor would be more of a problem that it was. I was worried for nothing. I did have to remount the ESC after the first flight because it got too hot and cut the flight short but after moving it to get more air flow it hardly gets warm now. It slightly melted the shrink wrap it got so hot !!! But it's all better now. I have never uploaded pics on here so I hope they turn out ok.
