Does the new Leopard OS allow running of windows without a reboot? That would be the ideal situation??

No. You can buy 3rd party virtualization software like Parallels (http://parallels.com) and VMware (http://vmware.com) which does let you run Windows and OS X side-by-side. However most graphics-intensive programs, including most major Windows flight sims, will not run under current virtualization software. A few sims, such as Aerofly Pro Deluxe, ClearView and FMS, will work under Parallels, but they run much slower than if you boot directly into Windows. I've personally tried ClearView and FMS running under Parallels 3.0, and while they work I found the framerates to be too low for them to be enjoyable to use. For instance if I run ClearView booted directly into Windows on my MacBook Pro, I get about 220 FPS, but when I run it under Parallels, I get about 25 FPS, which for me is barely usable.

For a frame of referance, you generally want about 60FPS for a smooth looking game, real "hot rod" game machines like mine get 75-80 FPS running the hottest games, and can go over 100 on older software. 40FPS is probably the minimum that would be acceptable to most people, so 25FPS is very slow... approaching a "slide-show" experience.

Aerofly Deluxe runs great under Bootcamp on the new 20" iMac 2 gHz. I have Parallels, but I haven't tried it yet with Aerofly. I prefer Bootcamp and the total Windows environment.

Exactly. 25 FPS is just enough that one can make a technically truthful claim that it works under Parallels, but it's too slow for it to be very enjoyable to use. Boot Camp is still the way to go.

Rebooting into Windows isn't that big of a pain. I like the flat out speed with Bootcamp. I'm used to holding downt the option key with booting back and forth.

The likeliness of a sim marketed for a mac has the same likeliness of a sim marketed for linux (ubuntu and similar linux based OSs). Lets face it: have you looked around the last time you were at an Apple store? There's only a handful of notable games. EA, one of the largest game manufacturer, has maybe 5 games marketed on the Mac platform and that is probably a high estimate.

If you upgrade to OS X 10.5 Leopard, it comes with bootcamp and the windows drivers are on the disk. if you never downloaded boot camp beta, you'll never see it unless you upgrade to leopard. even if you do use bootcamp, you still need a legit keycode for XP so you can get all the updates.

An RC sim for Mac won't be out for a LONG time so don't hold your breath.

A lot of software companies now like Blizzard make a single version on a single disc that works on both Mac and Windows. : )

Doing our part to spread R/C to Mac platform, porting eFlightWorks software to MacOS (it runs natively on both Intel and PowerPC Macs):

While I know it's highly unlikely Apple or another vendor will write a flight sim for OS-X I will add my vote for a Mac flight SIM.

I have a 1.25Ghz Power PC dual processor G4 running OS-X 10.4.10 so I can't do much but wish I had the new dual platform i-Macs and Macbooks.

If someone did write an app I'd buy it.

eFlightWorks is not a simulator, but the software used to configure our USB v.4 Transmitter-to-Computer interface as well as to work with our new eFlightWatt wattmeter/data logger.

People, who buy out USB interfaces to use them with Mac computer, run X-Plane, SSS, and CRRCsim simulators, but they have to go to a Windows PC to configure the interface. Soon (as soon as I get through all the GCC/XCode "limitations", a.k.a. bugs) and publish Mac version of eFlightWorks software, they will be able to configure our interfaces right from their Macs.

Using eFlightWatt wattmeter/data logger with Mac desktops/laptops will be a unique feature of our product, as none of the competitors supports Mac platform.

A note for Mac users running Bootcamp Beta from MacNN- the expiration date for Bootcamp is Dec 31, 07. The current view from Apple is to upgrade to Leopard if you want to keep running Bootcamp. The obvious workaround is to reset your system date before running after the new year. I'm looking for any news of patches, etc for those who don't want to upgrade to Leopard.

My understanding is that Bootcamp, once installed under Tiger, has no 'expiration date'. But it is true that you will not (after 12/31/07) be able to download, install, and partition your Mac HD with it. So my recommendation to all fellow Intel Mac users who aren't ready to spring for Leopard just yet is to download and use BootCamp right away. You will still be able to boot into Windows after 12/31/07.

You are right. I mistook some comments by contributors after the announcement. I thought it strange unless there are dated drivers that would terminate on Dec 31.

BTW, Realflight G4 runs fine on the iMac.

rallison,

I do not yet have a MAC but plan to get one eventually, meanwhile I tried to view and download "BootCamp" and could not find any link for it on the Apple Location.

Can you provide a direct link that it can be downloaded from?

Thanks.

I have an Intel iMac 20". I downloaded and tried to use Alpha Mac's heli sim but was having issues with using my controller.
With my new Esky Co Comanche I got their flight sim (complete with instructions in Japanese, thanks) - but it only runs on Windoze. I just need to install a version of Windoze on here and I can run Parallels.

Oh BTW - if you have Wintendo 98 and plan on putting that on your Mac via Parallels - DON'T. THat will save you several hours of your life, ie I can't believe how long we put up with Windoze.

Hi, I'm a years upon years user of Mac's. I must ask you.are you absolutley sure that Aerofly will run on The mac OS under Bootcamp""" The reason I ask is I want to get a new Imac but have been considering a PC just for the sim's out there. I have been useing Vista and it is not so bad really. But the Mac is so supiror in most other ways I would like to just keep my mac's. I would hate to buy a iMac and find out that I need my PC to run Aerofly. I find Aerofly to be the best flight sim out now and want to keep flying it. But I miss my Mac so bad. Like I said Vista is not so bad but it takes so much more time to do anything on it just because I am a nob on any Windows machine.

Please confirm that Aerofly will work on a iMac 2gz for me.

Thanks

How many of you are using an iMac to run flight simulators??

I'm an iMac (Macintosh/Apple) user and want to get a flight sim before I get an RC helicopter. I understand that I can use BootCamp (that's offered under Apples' new Leopard OS) to run a Windows OS and then run a flight sim such as Realflight's G4.

I'm currently about to get a new computer and I'm wondering what people think I should get as far as CPU speed, graphics card, RAM size and screen size for the simulator to work well in relation to cost. I've done a bit of reading online and gamers say the Macs basically suck for games. The biggest problem seems to be the lack of a good 3D graphics card choice or something to that affect. I've also read conflicting info on what screen size to get (20" or 24" ). Apparently bigger isn't always better. I currently have an iMac with a 20" screen, 1.83GHz processor, 512MB of RAM (upgradeable to 2MB), and an Intel GMA 950 - whatever that is. I'm running Tiger 10.4.1.1 but rather than upgrade I was thinking of getting a newer iMac with Leopard and BootCamp (need another computer for my girlfriend anyway) but can't decide what I should spend the money on. Some would suggest I get a PC but after spending the last 5or6 months on an iMac I never want to go back to PC.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

hi mate
i am running an iMac 20" 2.4Ghz with 1GB RAM, with 10.4.11. I use this for audio recording and it is plenty fast and has enough memory. THe screen size is adequate - 24" would be nice but it might be getting a bit too big then. All i can recommend is getting to an Apple dealer and trying out a 20" and 24".

all new machines will come with Leopard. I was a month or 2 too early, but from what i've heard of Leopard it doesn't bother me, though a lot of the bugs might be ironed out by now (though i'm speaking more to do with audio stuff).
with my recently purchased esky heli i got eski's simulator, but it only runs on windows - so i'm exploring my OS options for this

Jimbyjoe, am I correct in assuming that although you have an iMac, you are using a PC to run your flight sim? Good idea about checking an Apple dealer to compare graphics on the 20" vs 24" monitors. I guess I should also ask the 'Genius's' at the Apple dealer what they think about running a flight simulator and what is required. My only concern is that they'll tell me I should get the most expensive machine, etc. This may be so, but it's nice to have some outsider opinions. Thanks and happy jammin' Jimbyjoe

no, i don't have a PC in sight! in fact when at work I usually do Mac keyboard shortcuts on my PC! the alphamac one is mac native. i have Parallels (run Windows on your Mac) but am yet to get an operating system. Well I did put Win98 on (that was the only windows install disc i have), and needless to say, they are 3 hours of my life i won't get back! but Parallels is really good to run windows on, or just wait until you get your new iMac and use bootcamp. winners are grinners!

driftair,

Sorry, I was stuck in real life and did not see your post 'til today. As noted in a later post, BootCamp is no longer available as of 12/31/07; Mac useers who want to run Windows must now run Leopard. Sorry for not being able to see your post and get back to you right away.

Macuser,

I'm running RFG3.5 on my 2Ghz 17" iMac with 2GB, booting into Windows XP SP2, which was set up using BootCamp. Performance is adequate so long as I: 1) stick to the photofields and stay away from the 3-D environments; 2) the aircraft is relatively simple to render; and 3) I don't use all the best rendering settings, streamers, etc.

If you're considering RF4 and are seduced by simulated environments like the rippling water and nighttime carnival, I would definitely beef up your system. 20" will do, but max your processor and be generous with RAM. In particular, if a video processor/RAM upgrade is possilble, get it.

In the Apple store, they may have systems set up with a Windows partiion; if so, ask them to download the RFG3.x demo from the GreatPlanes RF website so you can judge for yourself how it runs on that system.

As someone forced to use Windows at work, but has been Mac'ed out at home since 1995, I'd recommend you stick with Mac and run what Windows software you must by booting into a partition. Best of both worlds.

- Rick

Thanks rallison

For macintosh/Apple/iMac users out there: Will 'Crossover Mac' allow us to run flight sims without using BootCamp?? And might it allow us to run sims without getting a registered copy of windows?? That'd be cool.

see www.tuaw.com/tag/crossover/ for more info on this.

Crossover Mac is currently at the Beta 2 phase (free for download and trial) and due for release in mid summer 2008.
