Thought I would throw in my $0.02

I was discussing buying a Parkzone UM 4-Site over on another RC forum. A guy there recommended Wholesaletrains, as they were about $34 cheaper on the plane than anyone else. I thought that sounded too good to be true, so I searched "wholesale trains" on Google and found this forum. Even with so many negative reviews, I was going to get about $210 worth of merchandise for just over $150. I decided to take the chance, and placed the order on the 8th. Every item I ordered said "Availability: Next Day." I called first thing on the 9th to cancel one item that I did not need, and I also inquired if they had an estimation of when the order would ship. The rep told me it would ship same day or the next day. However, it didn't ship until late in the day on the 11th. With that said, once FedEx picked it up, they got it to me by Saturday. So I placed the order and had it within 6 days. Not bad. I was a little nervous that they would try and charge me some sort of fee for the cancelled item considering some of the reviews I read on this thread, but they didn't. They did, however, try and charge me for shipping even though I was over the $150 required for free shipping. They tried to bill me $18.95 for shipping. Honestly that is probably a fair price to pay for FedEx ground considering the size of the box and the distance, but the fact is it should have been free for me. I immediately called customer service, and the rep told me that they had already caught the error and had credited my account back. Had they really caught it, or did they know about it and hope I wouldn't catch it? I don't know. But within 24hrs the money had been put back onto my card.

Pros: Very cheap prices on certain items; free shipping IF, IF, IF, you meet their guidelines; good customer service; relatively fast packaging and shipping

Cons: Shipping rules and regulations can be confusing, as free shipping ONLY applies to aircraft and aircraft accessories; Product availability posted on website wasn't completely accurate, although not terribly off; Charged me $19 they shouldn't have, but like I said, it was immediately reimbursed upon calling them; It can take multiple days before they actually create an invoice and bill your credit card; Shipping on non aircraft parts is like playing Russian Roulette if ordered online without calling first

Although my experience was a mostly pleasant one, I can definitely see how the complaints from earlier posters are valid. Possibly the worst thing about ordering from them is the fact that when you click "confirm order" you don't really know how much money you just agreed to spend. All in all, though, I will order from them again. I would recommend using a credit card as opposed to a debit card for obvious reasons such as security and ability to dispute charges. Also, if you need the parts ASAP, order elsewhere.

But like I said, I saved $60 and the order arrived 6 days after placing it.

I have ordered from Wholesale Trains repeatedly and NEVER had any problems whatsoever. I was however ordering model trains not R/C stuff. I always receive what I order, in good time, in good shape and exactly how they said it was going to be shipped. I'm very sorry to hear all the problems the rest of you folks are having

Buyer beware of Wholesaletrains.com

I ordered a G-Scale Hogwarts Railway train set.  It runs on disposable batteries, but for $25 more you can purchase a rechargeable battery which is supposed to plug into a slot in the tender.  The slot in the tender was malformed (too small) and the plug will not slide into it.

I contacted Becky at Customer Service and she said that there wasn't anything wrong with it and that I must have been trying to put it in sideways.  I explained a couple more times by email what the problem was, even sent digital pictures.  She hasn't answered my last 3 emails.

Cheated once, shame on them.  Cheated twice, shame on me.

I'll take my business elsewhere and encourage Model Club members to do the same.

A few years ago I ordered a Seagull Dual Ace, engines, servos, etc. from Wholesale Trains........well they were cheaper than everybody else..............when the items arrived and I checked the invoice charges..................the invoice showed that there were a few items that were backordered and will be shipped in the future as they became available....................I called Wholesale Trains and someone answered and confirmed that some items were backordered.............when all the backordered items finally came, I double checked the items on hand versus the invoice........... I checked the total items that were finally delivered and then I compared it to the invoice........ I discovered that they have changed some of my order and then..............I double checked the invoice and I discovered that they have made a mistake in my order and they have UNDERCHARGED me and to compensate for my accidental underpayment they changed my order so that they will not lose money on this underpayment transaction that was their billing mistake. I did not complain anymore even when they changed my order because I did not want them to lose any money on the transaction.......so all in all they did not lose any money on the transaction and I was only charged for the items that were actually delivered...........nobody lost any money in this transaction...........however the parts that I ordered were changed without informing me and I did not get all the items I ordered but I was NOT CHEATED IN ANY WAY.......the transaction was honest on both sides although I did not get all the items I ordered AND I WAS CHARGED ONLY FOR THE ITEMS THAT WERE ACTUALLY SHIPPED. Nobody lost any money. THEM OR MYSELF. With this experience....they came across as being OVERWHELMED AT TIMES AND WILL LOSE TRACK OF THE BILLING ARITHMETIC. Hopefully they have fixed or will fix these issues and give the customer good, accurate, timely service. Larry.

Hi Guys -

Just want to ADD to the "Wholesaletrains.com" debate.

My hobby is model railroading and I have been into the "Wholesaletrains.com" (aka "Lantz Hobbies" store on quite a few ocassions over the past month or so.  Each visit has resulted in (on average) a $150 + purchase.

What I have found is two people, one (a general shop assistant) who knows absolutely nothing about anything in the store and who has to rely on the other person for help.  The second person is mor knowledgable about the products she sells, at least in so far as trains etc are concerned and appeared very helpful on my first few visits.  Bear in mind here that I am/was new to the hobby when I first went to the store so I needed all the help I could get.  Since that first visit I have been back on numerous ocassions and with each return visit the "customer service" seemed to dwindle gradually and the sales girl became abrupt and rude suggesting (by her attitude) that she far better things to do than provide a service, other than taking my money of course.  The second female remained helpful "UNTIL" I made a complaint about their ordering service (and I say that in jest).

Almost 2 weeks ago I ordered a couple of small items (total value around $12 + tax).  At that time the "better" female placed the order, or so it appeared at the time as they have glare shields on their computer monitors that prevent the buyer from dseeing what they are really doing.  I was told the items would be available to me within a few days and I could pick them up on my next trip down there, which takes about an hour and a half.  Two or three days ago I returned to collect my order and a few other items.  After finding the items I needed I asked about my order.  The "abrupt" female told me that I was not in the system, looslely translated - there was NO RECORD of an order being placed.  In the meantime I asked the female who supposedly placed the order what was happening to be told again that there was no record of it AND, that it was probably that my order had been "KICKED" - in other words, removed.

Okay, so this is not a life threatening situation; however, during my visits (and something I should have paid more attention to) I heard numerous phone calls involving customers calling about orders they had placed and NOT recieved.  For each of those calls that I overheard, the excuse was always the same - we placed the order (did they?) or we ares till waiting for the order to come into the shop.  I have overheard around 6 or seven of those types of calls over the course of my 4 visits to the store, an amount that seems to indicate VERY UNRELIABLE service and creates an impression that no one there sems to know what they are doing, OTHER than taking money fro people.

With the above in mind (together with the other bad comments previously) I would NEVER ORDER from wholesaletrains.com NOR place an order with them in person.

On the other hand, IF you know what you want and don't require assistance or help and IF what you want is on the shelves in the store then it isn't a bad place to go.  Their prices are generally much cheaper than elsewhere and they do seem to stock the most common items, at least where model railroading is concerned.  IF you do need to place an order for something, find another place to do business with, even if that place is a little more expensive.  The cost of the item is relative really - if you don't get it, or have to fight tooth and nail to get it or a refund (good luck ont hat too by the way) then the low costs become irrelevant.  I would (and will) prefer to deal with a reputable business (regardless of the cost financially) and be assured of getting what I ordered in the time frame specified, than deal with rude and arrogant shop assistants with low prices.

By comaprison, I deal with DAN's Crafts and Things, speciffically a person called John.  A week or so ago I tried ordering some items from DANS using their website but continually had my order denied.  I established this was due to my having an international credit card and not a US issued one.  Within 24 hours I received an email apologising for the problems I had had and a full explaination of why the order had been denied.  The follwoing day I went into Dan's and spoke with John, to discover that he had gone around and put ALL of the items I wanted to one side for me to ensure that I received them AND discussed with me alternatives for my placing an online order.  After the Lantz shambles,I emailed John regarding the items I had ordered through Lantz and, within 24 hours, recieved anemail back from him telling me that the items had been ordered and would be in in about 2 weeks.  He also asked if I wanted them shipped to me from the store or if I wanted to pick them up personally to save some money.  NOW THAT IS SERVICE!!!!

Cheers,

wombat457

When you order from any company online you need to know what kind of business you're ordering from. A Brick & Mortar Hobby Shop or an E-tailer. Most of the e-tailers are just drop ship Internet retailers, they have no ''stock'' on hand, they are just a middle man. A actual Hobby Shop might have a rare out of stock everywhere else part in stock, but if you go to Tower or Horizon and they are out of stock,, chance are pretty good so is everyone else.

If you feel you've been tricked into thinking the part was in stock and it wasn't, and you're getting charged based on this deception. That's a Fraud. Call your CC company and file a dispute, they'll reverses the charges. If enough people do that the CC companies will get tired of doing business with the guy. Believe me CC companies hate extra work

good luck

Any one who orders (blindly) from a supposed business that does not have physical address (ie shop) is crazy!  However, when you order from a place of business that does exist, that does have a premises and stock that can be seen, felt and purchased but also offers an online service, it is not unreansonable to conclude that they do have an item as advertised, or, are in a position to obtain that item from their suppliers.  On face value, I fail to see any genuine concerns that an individual may have with dealing with such a business UNTIL such time as they are given good reason for having suspicions.

To simply refer to people who do deal with "real" companies over the internet as "tards" is a little derogatory in my opinion, either that, or you have never been "caught out" by anyone.

The whole point of my post was to warn people of the potential problems that may (and most likely will from all of the bad reviews they have) when dealing with "www.wholesaletrains.com"

Cheers,

wombat457

NEVER EVER order from Wholesaletrains! i made the mistake of ordering from them three items, a set of traxxas bandit front axles #tra2437 ( no bigger than a quarter in size ), a 26 tooth pinion gear #tra2426 ( smaller than a nickle ), and a slipper shaft #tra3793 ( 2 inches long and as big around as a BB ) for a 1.80 a piece the total come to 5.40 i never saw a shipping and handling fee anywhere on the site i chose normal shipping and ordered the parts thinking it couldnt be too much for three little parts that would fit in an envelope i then emailed them asking what shipping and handling would be they emailed me back saying 9.95 and after waiting a week just for them to ship it i get an email saying i was charged 14.95 for shipping and handling and it took another week just to recieve it, after sending two emails over a period of two weeks stating i was dissatisfied and to contact me and explain the situation they just ignored me i finally called them and they claimed that shipping was 9.95 and handling was 5.00, i was charged three times the order price just for shipping! RIDICULOUS!!! i will NEVER! do business with them again and recommed everyone stay away!

Wholesale Trains are still at it..    ..On August 9 , 2012 , I Ordered 6 Guillows 300 series kits...small box under 5 lbs ..total $110.   They evidently shipped Fedex ground - obvioiusly in a truck that travels at more than warp speed. ( their cheapest rate they said) for $79.95..  and after careful review of their policies they were 'correct" and Fedex Ground is the only method they use for internatonal shipments.   I just had not dug deep enough and long enough into their website OR read this forum first.

Bottom line...especially if you are one of their international customers..Please .DO NOT support this type of business model or any business unless all charges are disclosed before the order is finalized.     I also had to pay the usual custom fee of $8.50 and the now standard 2% extra on my credit card ( more fine print on a new Visa policy I had not noticed ) for purchasing something out of the country...    So...it came close to 90% of the product cost for delivery.     Buyer beware.!!            I did enquire and they did answer promptly with a form letter advising me that I had legally 'agreed'.   And  Fedex Ground trucks are evidently as fast as Air as it arrived within 3 business days.

Also,  All US firms who offer free shipping in the US and seem to  use every available fee for  Canadian customers are also a bit of a pet peeve.  I have purchased a fair amount over the last year from a couple of very good and reputable US suppliers who offer free shipping but not to Canada and then they tack on a healthy 'handling' fee . And now the credit card companies want in on it with higher exchange and foreign buying fees.  It really is a jungle out there!   Cheers!

Strange isn't it? I've tried to sell stuff to you guys up north before,, the shipping cost is always the deal breaker. Sometimes cheaper to send a large package to Australia than across the north boarder, I thought NAFTA was supposed to make commerce easier between our countries?

I've noticed that before on some e-commerce sites,, I won't pull the trigger unless I know the exact shipping cost up front.

Also, I have a FedEx account,, I've been pinched myself quoting prices based on the online shipping system only to be charged more than the amount quoted. Smallish packages are usually right on, but larger ones sometimes come back costing more. My UPS and USPS accounts never do that,, but FedEx is a different story. Last time I disputed the up-charges ($22) and they didn't even contact me asking why,, just told me they ruled in their favor,, basically told me to pound sand.. I haven't used their online system since

Wholesaletrains ( Lantz) uses a bus. model that discounts prices but overcharges heavily on shipping and handling...Some ebay vendors do the same but with paypal they must disclose the total cost.  As for shipping we have shipped to and received from the US for over 20 years and the postal services in both countries have been incredibly good.  Ours even issues a free card ( Venture) that allows for up to 50% off even to occasional users.   Perhaps researching the USPS offerings and checking size categories etc. may be of help.  I sent a parcel to NY that was 4 times the size of the 6 kits Wholesaletrains sent me for $66 and it was the premier service option that matched the speed of that Fedex charge Wholesale came up with.     The cheapest insured option avialable ( 8 day delivery ) for that package was $26!  but the customer was in a big rush.

As for US vendors Tower Hobbies ( they use USPS)  are unbelievably good for Canadian Customers.  ( their product 'service ' is 'spotty but in over 100+ shipments they only 'cost' me about $80 in 'disputes' I 'lost' with them but saved me hundreds in shipping and handling. )  They actually ship 'free' if up to $300 is ordered and if you pay $19 a year for there 'supersaver' club...and it really is a SUPERSAVER as they offer up to $50 off if you order $300  ( $15 on$100) . And often their scratchndents are almost as good as new and certainly never inacurate.

Other good shippers ( at least for us   are Horizon Hobby, AC Supply, PennValley, Manzano Laser, BP Hobbies, Hobbyking and ...I am sure I might be happy with many others that I have not dealt with.
I had not so good shipping expense saving with Hobby Lobby, Sig, Parkscale, Cleveland Plans, Easybuilt and a few more but I understand they are very reliable and highly thought of in the US.  They may simply not deal with a smaller market like ours much and not spend a lot of time checking out better shipping options for north of the border.  To me , as you say, the shipping charges are often a dealbreaker but I feel it is more likely because of the time spent to find the price breaks as some vendors seem to be able to do it very well. But
Wholesaletrains outdid them all in overcharging and a bit of deceptive marketing.  Cheers!
