Dan,

I have not made it down to Evergreen yet but I did happen to be up north and stopped by the Olympic Flight museum and took the opportunity to do a walk-a-round of their P-51D "American Beauty". I hope these will be helpful as you get around to the detail work.

For you guys who have built the wing already I have a question. In step (25) it calls for adding W-2A and W-SE. Where on the plans can I find the patterns for these?

Capt G,

W-SE is a typo, should be W-5F , it's the plywood rib in the flap where the ball link is mounted for the flap-pushrod. you can find the template on the part list (above F-4)

W-2A is the cap rib, inboard side of the the flaps on the wing side, size is determined after cutting flaps out. Make it from scrap. pattern will be close to the rear of W-2, but slightly longer

Hope that helps,
GJ

On the subject of building......

For those that already build this bird;

I'm trying to find out how the Ziroli balances so I know where I need to save weight, or don't have to be too fussy about extra reinforcement etc.
I'm not asking for the CG, I know that, but just if she tends to build tail heavy like most stangs, or nose-heavy.
used engine will be the 3W 75i, with Pitts muffler. finish fibergl/ paint.

Thanks in advance,
GJ

Hi Viper1

I heard in a few other posts that it usually ends up tail heavy, so I'm sort of keeping that in mind with my build... but I'd love to hear some more direct solid opinions on it too.

Matt

Hi all,

sorry I have not been on posting pic's. I just want to show my new resparator mask I built.
Being sick I have to keep balsa dust and glue out of my lungs. Being a Firefighter I hade my airpack mask from MSA, I got the plug in resparator cartridge adapter and now I have
a good way of keeping dust out of my lungs. Sorry all but you have to be a firefighter to
get this mask and adapter and the cost is $350.00.

Regards,
Dan Crawford

Thanks Matt,

Solid enough answer for me!
With "the big one" I expect there's some more room to play with equipment location, this is going to be my 4th Mustang (various sizes) and they all were a tidbit tailheavy.

Dan, (Alias Darth Vader )

WB, why don't you down-size your design a bit, would make some good air filters in your Mustang in the scale location..

But seriously, it's a good idea, I'm wearing a dustmask now when I have to sand a lot, specially balsa dust creates an allergy in the long term and I noticed after years I started getting a blocked nose when building on longer projects.....

GJ

Hi

I use some of those cheapy masks for the big sands...you can really feel it otherwise.

Viper...how did you make the air vent shown there? Thin aluminum with holes?

....So I'm adding the fuse bottom ply flat stringers that shape towards and over the airscoop. Former F-8 has a doubler F-8A that looks like your supposed to cut off later...so I presume you should not really glue F-8a flat onto F-8????? Instructions look like their may be a misprint and are also very vague here.

Is the airscoop supposed to mounted permanently to the wing then after, or just make some type of rig to hold it on? Is the resin scoop just sinpler to use then...the built version doesn't look to hard but again instructions are very vague.

On my other H9 P51, the scoop is attached permanently to the wing which works fine. thoughts?

Matt

Hi Matt,

After carving the outline of panel in the cowl, I released (or waxed) it and epoxied a few layers of glass in that area, after hardening cut out the panels and save the scrap (the scratched outline will be transfered in the panel as well.
Then I lay them on the cowl, transfered the outline (including a tiny gap) , cut out the cowl, cut strips of the scrap in "step1", glue them around the edge in the inside of cowl,
And finally after drilling the holes, glue panel in. I will add the eight tiny screws (or only heads) later.

Re the radiator scoop;
you didn't mention if you use the fiberglass or build up scoop, doesn't make much difference anyway.

This is what I got in mind, (sorry didnt check manual or plans, but got most in my head)
F8a is not a doubler, but the rear former for your scoop.
I don't like to glue the scoop permanently on the wing of this size, not handy during transport.
I will use two dowels on the scoop at the rear, and 1 or 2 screws on front in the inlet top lip to fix it to the wing.
this will all be hidden, but donowhowyet
Don't forget to make the vertical scale inlet spike one -or the other way (carbon?) , you won't regret this during a possible belly landing for obvious reasons(exactly the function of the full scale as well)

Hi all,

You all must be having fun building your P-51's I can not work on mine till I fix the heat in my shop. My shop is in the back yard of my home a 18'x20' building, I instaled propane heat last year
but it stoped working last week and it is 35 out today COLD!!! so my Dad and I will try to fix it tonight.
As for the radiator scoop on the P-51, I got the fiberglass one from Ziroli as the wood one would be a pain in the butt.

Regards,
Dan Crawford

Dan,

Building? It's a series of problem solving, how can you call that "Fun?"
Also we're at the start of summer on this side Dan,
Didn't do much lately on mine either, have been making a set of droptanks for Falcon XR, and busy with work (or too tired)
I have the FG scoop as well, but will make a piece of innner ducting so that will still give me some work to it. at the end it won't make much difference with a buildup version I guess.

Got a start on laying up the 2nd wing half. Both outer sections are now removable on the tubes. Now need to glue the center halves together and have a 3 pc wing. I too have the f-glas scoop and f-glas fuse. I was wondering how I was going to fasten it on. This is mustang # 14 for me (all differnt kinds) and my 1st Ziroli.
