N1EDM,

Nice to have you here, chime in any time. I now have heat in my work shop so I will start working on my P-51 soon. I just spent 4 days in the hospital and it gave me a lot of time to think
of what to do next, finish the fuse planking and install the tail, and start the new wing.
Pic's will come soon!

Regards,
Dan Crawford

Hey Dan

Yes your plane is taking shape! Good to hear your back to work on it...nice to be able to see inside your shop a bit....I could use a shop and hangar like that too...basement is getting tight.

So I started on the retract plates last night... the Sierra retracts require a lot of deeper cutting of the ribs along the strut lines....how much did you worry about strength here? I guess I'll have about 1/4 left of the rib at the bottom(actually top of wing) which I'll carbon fiber heavily, and use ply doubles etc. Did you use any other type of strengthing here where it really thins out?

....and thanks Capt G.

Matt

Hello82,

Yes the top of the rib gets thin I am going to use a layer of 3/32 balsa in side of the gear wells
to make the sheeting stronger. Then use 6oz cloth with a bit of carbon cloth, that should be good. How did your LG.plates work out???

Dan Crawford

Hey TL

Yeah the plates worked well... thanks again for the template. Had to do a bit of adjusting but they were very close..still trial fitting it all and contemplating how to reinforce it.

Do you feel 1/4 inch is enough for the backing of the lock nuts for the retracts? I'm thinking about running another smaller 1/4 strip at the exact mount location screw holes to give move substance to it.

Can you open and close these retracts manually or do you need to pump air through them every time?

Hello82,

You need to pump air to get the gear to work when they are installed in the wing. And yes I think 1/4 is ok you dont want to put a lot of extra wood you dont need. Keep her light.

Hey all

...so on the retracts...is their other some geometry to consider somewhere? I read in some post that the plans are wrong...but I was not clear in what was meant...in relation to tail wheel height, or angle of struts to scale, etc.

Capt G...you have different size shims under your retract mount...was that for a certain angle issue?

TL...did you get the Sierras a bit below the top of the ribs or even with them? They are pretty heft struts. Mine seem to be just even with them and I sense I may run into problems later with getting a flush door all the way across, unless I counter sink or lower the whole retract platform a bit. I would nice to end up with the really clean lines Viper has going there on his TF!!!!

Yeah, I'll also have to rig up some air lines then for working purposes to make them movable for checking out all the geometry before gluing in the platform.

I found that if you glue the gear mounting plate in as per the plans , you need shims to get the gear to lock up in the well without going through the top of the wing. Mine took 1/4" and 3/32 shims. Will the Sierra gear put the struts far enough fwd in the wing?

Hey

I have not tried how the Sierras lock and unlock yet (Dan?)..but right now they are locked closed and fit into the wing quite well, right over the plan... the axle line up with the planned robarts also...maybe the struts are a hair high like I said. Your struts really look like they really go it a lot deeper and on an angle, hence the shims as you say.

When you say far enough forward, do you mean toward the leading edge? If so, it's fine that way too. Pretty much like our H9 P51 with Robarts.

Anyone considering a RDS (Rotarty Driver System) to hide the wing linkages? Anyone have experience and thoughts on the subject?
