If retracts are not allowed in QM40 then forgive my post and ignore. But, I was digging a year or so ago and found some photos, mostly euro looking, that had pretty fancy retracts on F3D's. I had photos then my computer decided the hard drive was done so I lost everything. Does anyone know which type they were using and were they a pain in the but or worth it? Thanks, Erik.

Jetdryvr,

Retracts are not allowed in Q40. But you could put them in a Q40 and fly it for giggles, since the wing thickness and landing stresses are about the same between Q40 and F3D. If you're interested, the best recommendation I can make is to ask Lyle Larson what he's using (or used, as of a year ago) in his F3D Vendetta. They seemed to work very well. Lyle's at www.calspeedpros.com .

Retracts are a pain in the butt. But if you've ever ridden on an airliner and felt the difference when the pilot puts the wheels down for landing, you know that when retracts work right, they really help.

Thanks Duane,
Yes, they can help a lot and it is a Vendetta-type plane I would put them in for giggles. Hopefully Lyle was using the ones I was seeing in some of the Euro-F3D photos. Thanks again, Erik.

I saw some retracts at one of the Q40 races in Phoenix once. They were rather inovative and designed by a guy with an ID of DHG!

As I recall they were a one shot system;i.e., they were set in the down position and after take off auto retracted so that a portion of the wheels still protruded from the wing. Then when the engine was shut down it landed dead stick. The exposed wheels kept the belly of the plane off the ground. Very cool!

Stan,

Wow, you have a good memory. That was the 2000 F3D team trial. The airplane flew very well, but that Phx runway (picture Rice Krispies bars, but with crushed volcanic flint flakes in place of the Rice Krispies) beat it to death before the 6th round. The idea would've worked splendidly on grass.
