It's been a while since I posted any updates. After much debate we decided to install pull/pull on the ailerons as the full scale counterpart. I wasn't very happy with the access hatches I made for the aileron and flap servo so this was also a good time to correct these. The kit provides aluminum covers for the wing to simulate the wing fuel tanks so I decided to provide servo access under these covers, both the flap and aileron servo will be mounted near the root. Three CB Associates pulleys are used to direct the cables to the aileron servo. The control horns are fabed out of 18 gauge sheet steel and drilled like the full scale. Dubro 1/4 scale turnbuckles are used. The fitting on the control horn is a Dubro rod end turned down to simulate the full scale version, once the plane is painted, the turnbuckles will be locked in place with tie wire. Tony Hallo

Tony , Thanks for the pics . I have been contemplating the same modifications to my aileron and flap controls . I am wondering where you got the cable pulleys and are they close to scale in size (mainly regarding the exposed part). Please keep up the posts they are inspiring.

Here's some photos of the bottom of the wing. The flap control horn is moved to the flap hinge pocket. The original horn location is also shown in the photo. Tony Hallo

While traveling on business today through Carmichaels, PA I stopped off at Brodak's Hobby Shop (The control line guy) and found a NOS set of Dubro1/3 scale Cub wheels. These are the pneumatic style that's out of production. Even have the Goodyear name on the side and 8.00 x 4 markings. This will be a nice addition to the Cub. The tires provided with the kit (Right side of the photo) are foam filled and have a tacky glossy finish, the pneumatic tires look like the real thing. The packaging was faded and the original price was $30.80, they were marked the price down some time ago to $24.84 and I got 10% discount on top of that, not a bad invesment for $23.00! I bet they were happy they finially disappeared! Where did the spell check go? Tony Hallo

The flap linkage is complete on the right wing, now I need to go back over the left wing and install the current control system, remove the previous installed hatches and redo the bottom cap strips in those areas. The wings are nearing completion and it will soon be time to marry the wings to the fuselage and fit the lift struts. I have ruled out metalic streamline tubing and will use the kit supplied spruce pieces. I'm brainstroming a differnt attachment method for the connections at the wings, any ideas out there? When using the scale aileron hinge kit From Balsa USA the gap between the wing and the aileron/flap is rather excessive when done per plans. The instructions have you install a triangle shaped filler on the trailing edge. On the full scale, a formed alumium end cap is fitted to fill the gap. I added a 3/16" filler piece and sanded a radius to close the gap.

To keep the wings off the workbench surface I made up these stands. The wing rests on the spars in the open bay area, the wing can be mounted from either side while working on it, when doing work like sanding, I use paper clips to hold the wing in place. I need these because the top of my bench is normally rather messy. I expect it will be a week or two before I finish off both wings, signing off until then. Tony Hallo
