I'm thinking of replacing the G62 on my 85 " CAP with a ZDZ 50 NG to improve 3D performance. What do you guys think?
Thanks!
Dave

It's one possible option as is a DA 50, Brison 3.2, or a 3W 55 or 56.

Clearly you're trying for lighter. I don't believe the ZDZ can match the 62 in output.

Ya think about sending it to Ralph at rcignitions? It will lose about a lb of weight an still retain the HP your used to.

A zdz should do the trick too. Im a little partial to brison myself though

I think Dan had the right or best idea. Ralph shaves the weight on the 62 down to around 4 pounds and an ounce or two. That would be with his electronic (CH) ignition system as well. The weight difference between the ZDZ and the 62 at that point would be minimal and you would dpend a whole bunch less that you would for a new engine.
s
Now if you insist on an engine change I'd be willing to take a well broken in 62 off of someone's hands so I could send it in to Ralph for converting. I have some project in mind where my 3.2 Brisons may not be quite up to the task for the type of performance I would be looking for. I'm thinking of a particular 232....

I think maybe Pat and Dan have the better solution...

I've run a ZDZ-50RV on a 1/4 scale Extra for awhile and just recently replaced it with the new NG. While it did provide a performance improvement and I really do like the ZDZ, its not going to be a 3D beast at this altitude. I don't remember what your field elevation is there in Idaho, but around here at 4500' ASL your plane is what we call a "tweener", that is between sizes for good results from common engine/airframe combinations. I've never run a G62 and not seen many of them are around here, but a number of guys in Colorado use them and the lightened versions seem to be as advertised, less weight and similar performance. All things being equal, there is no substitute for displacement.

Oh, I weighed the new 50NG complete less muffler and standoffs on a postal scale, it's 3lbs. 4.7oz. if you're comparing engine weights.

My 3W 56 has enough to pull my 17.5 lbs. CAP out of hover here and we're at 5000 ft.

I'm not a 3D aficionado but most of the guys around here who do the IMAC freestyle stuff, prefer a combination which will not only pull out of a hover but do it with authority. I love to watch 'em fly those models...

That kind of thrust to weight ratio is what I was referring to by a 3D beast.

Good thoughts and ideas, So here's the deal, gents.... These Wildhare planes just don't die. I've got the original Extra Special which I've had forever, with hundreds of flights on it. Except for a little hanger rash, it still looks pretty good, too. But I pulled the motor last spring to put in my new CAP. What I really want is to have both of them flying 'cause I miss the 'special, which was designed with the G62 in mind. I can get a suprising amount of 3D out of the CAP with the stock G62, but the transition from normal to HA is critical due to the weight. So I'd like to have a lower wing loading for the CAP (which would also mean I'd need less weight to get the CG where I want it) and I want my G62 back for the Extra Special. SO I need (did I say need?) a new motor and felt something more modern would be nice and I like what I've read of the ZDZ. If Tom had only built planes that would wear out with normal use I wouldn't have this problem so I blame him

Okay, Lewiston Id, is not that high (been there) so a good 50 for the Extra would work fine. Go with the mosified 62 for the Cap unless you have a 70 just sitting around. The 70 returns you to the additional weight issue.

I have a pair of Brison 3.2's that I'm not using at the moment and would be willing to part with the older one reasonable, which is in excellent running condition. Mechanical advance so if you're one of the ones that believes electrical advance is better the offer is off for general purposes..
