After my first flight last Thursday, I took the cap back out again on Friday evening. I got in about five flights as I was tuning the DA-50 when I, like an idiot, got it too lean on the low-end. At about a hundred feet and upwind I turned it upside down and then silence. It was in one of those big decisions times and I thought it would be best to turn downwind and try to land with the wind instead of stalling trying to get it upwind again (our field has obstacles at each end). Let’s just say that the cap glides really well and it floated right down and past the runway before I had to dump her or really mess her up. Damage. The right aileron tip was smashed but the fuse had broken in two just below the back bottom of the canopy. The prop was fine but the wing tube was bent a little. Saturday morning I got to work and had the fuse back together. That thin plywood snaps really easy and where she split it seems that is maybe the weak part of the fuse. Some reinforcement there might not be a bad idea. A little magic with white ultracote and putting the diamonds back on she looked almost new. On Monday I went out flying again and she flew great and couldn’t notice any difference. As the day went on the wind kept picking up and even in a 20 mph wind she is very easy to land. The more I flew the more I liked this plane. A friend helped me get the mixture just right and we were flying huge IMAC moves with no lack of power at all. It was hard to do a good hover in the wind but she easily sat there at half-throttle or less and pulled up swiftly with full throttle. Harriers were sweet with very little wing rock. Only thing I don’t like so far is that it pulls toward the landing gear in knife edge. Anyway what started out as bad weekend ended up pretty good.
