Flat wire rigging can be used. That's what came with my Duncan Hutson kit. I think you can purchase some steel flat wire from places like McMaster Carr or similar places.
That tube is a pump for priming the Upper Fuel tank in the wing or the Main Tank, I think. lol

Thanks for the input, guys Steve could be right. I'd have to have one of those special round seats with the hole in the middle. Those pilots had to have a lot more guts me. Hell. I can get freaked out just flying a model
By the way, heres a pic of the plane I trying to model. This way if I nose over on the landing. I can claim it's a scale manuver.

Cheers, I finished and flew one of BalsaUSA's SE5a's this August. It's powered by a Saito 180. I needed to add about 3.5 lbs of balast under the engine area. I built a box out of 1/4 " plywood to protect the one pc wings in transport. It works well. I used 1/8 Bungee cord to connect the wood axle between the wheels. Its a compromise but does flex enough to absorb some of my rough landings. The plastic keepers on the gear work fine so far. My daughter put my grandson in the cockpit wit hPhotoshop after the first flight. He's now installed as a profile pilot, but I'm finishing an Aces of Iron pilot. View photo under warbird galeries. So what do you think of he BUSA SE5 so far? Do you have any feed back on how they fly?

Thanks

Question. Did the SE5a have variable throttle control? I was told today that it did not, and that it was either at full throttle or idle. This makes no sense to me, but the guy that told me is usually a reliable source of info. I have researched this plane for two years and have never come across this tidbit. Has anyone else?

sgtshultz, I finished my BUSA last winter and flew it this summer. It is powered with a Moki 1.8 and it flys very well. As you might expect, it flys slowly and, I think, quite scale like. It takes off in a surprisingly short distance (30' - 40') and lands easily. It is a high drag plane so I keep quite a bit of power on during the approach and fly it almost to the ground before flaring and cutting the power.
At that point it just "sits down" on its gear. and you taxi it back to the pits. The booklet says that it is not tolerant of much crosswind and I expect that is a true statement but I have not attempted any landings with a strong crosswind. The gear is quite softly sprung (absorbs landings well) and any crosswind would probably be a tippy affair. It was fun to build and an overall good experience.

Steve,

I was reading a book I own on flying the Shuttleworth aircraft (can't think of the title or author right now), and on the SE-5a it says that the eight cylinder engine had full (as in complete) throttle control.

I can't imagine a dogfight without full control. I have a combat simulator, and throttle control is esential to staying behind your opponent.
The hard part will be convincing my friend. He's been on the FAI team three times, and he's helping me with the documentation presentation, and coaching me on flying. If you remember the name of the book, I would like to get a copy. I'll need it!

Steve, for a dogfight without throttle control check the Clerget or La Rhone powered fighters. As you probably know their version of throttle was to cut the magnitos there by reducing power when the switches were turned off. Talk about multi-tasking!!
Imagine trying to adjust your throttle so as to not over shoot your slower target like a bomber and still keep your gun sight and plane on target!

Not to mention the torque when you kick it back on. I knew some aircraft were operated that way. I just can't see the SE5a being one of them. I could be wrong, but I'll have to see it in writing to believe it.

Steve have you watched the video on the French Site of the SE5 flying? It's pretty instructive to watch. Torque from those rotary engines was awsome! The Camel used left rudder in left AND right turns!..

I did watch the videos. I thought I had downloaded the one for the SE5a, but I can't seem to be able to find it. Also, the videos at the web site aren't working right now. Hopefully this is a temperary problem. The videos are great.

Uh oh.. yeah lets hope it's just temporary. You might email them about the throttle question and see if they answer?
