You might want to try the Aiptek mini pencam 1.3. There are many people here on RCU and on RC Groups that believe that the pencam is the best camera for aerial photography as it is small, light weight, easy to use, inexpensive (about $60 at Wal Mart), and has many choices for electronic switches for triggering the shutter.

In the UK, Novatech are currently doing one for £29.97 (inc VAT) (that's a bit over $45). See http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html
It's a bit bigger than the Aiptek though.

They must have seen your post and raised the price. Its now £44.00. Thankx for the tip though. The Aiptek brand isn't available in Canada and they won't ship it over the border. It looks like I need to stick to a higher profile brand name.

Fatsky, were you refering to my append? If so the camera is still at £29.95, although they don't have any currently in stock, you can pre-order for mid-jan when they have 1000 more coming in at the same price.
Maybe they bumped the price up as they were running out, and before they knew they had a load more coming in (they don't normally do that, they often have cheap offers which they quickly run out of, all at the same price).
Think it may be a tad large for my gliders though.

Checked Novatech website & seems there all gone. I wanted to check what the pixel count was....

Doubt it would beat the G-DSmart II & III camers. these start at about £57 for the II which has 2.1 megapixel and an low weight of 40g. For model purposes their spec are ideal.

I looked on www.dabs.com for details... going to order a II...

Sorry guys... make that a g-smart III

...because its still 40g but has a genuine 2.1 mpixel CMOS sensor, and they reckon they can boost this to 3.1 with software. At £65, I'l let you know what the pics I get when I put it to use...

You are right, they have all gone, however they are getting another 1000 in later this month at the same price, and you can pre-order one.
Naturally, you gets what you pays for, and it is not mega-resolution; max res of 640x480 (0.3 mp?), and the weight isn't listed, but with 4xAA batteries, it's not going to be light, and depending on what you are looking for, I'm not even going to say it's mega value.

No offence Dave, but I think the original question is asking for potentially conflicting requirements, cheap isn't always giong to be light nor light necessarily cheap. I guess you are after a good compromise

But as an answer to what's the cheapest digital camera - I think I'll still 'claim the prize' - unless anyone knows better?

I picked up an appx 3 oz digital camera for... $10 at Office Max. It was a special deal, normally $25.

Turns out... its focal range is 5 to 12 ft. No good for carrying aloft and taking pictures. But it proves that these cameras can be VERY cheap.

which just goes to show that the cheapest could also be quite light if not quite the lightest! Even if it is totally useless for what you want to use it for. So I guess we're now looking for a cheaper, lighter camera with a much longer focal range. (I can't see how anyone is going to beat $10 though!)

Instead of wondering what the cheapest digital camera is you should be looking for the best one. The cheapest cameras are so bad they are not worth the plastic they are made of.there is no point bying them. I have tried a selection of ultalight diggital cameras(l'espion(cr*p) , Mustek (less c**p), Gsmart)
and the Gsmart Mini 2 and 3 are quite literally in a league of their own. I have enclosed a picture that i took with one at dusk in richmond park. the resolution is much less than the photo it took because I had to scale the photo down to get its size small enough.

They take really great pictures that are worth looking at.I would post a picture if I could but RCU's maximum file size for attachement is way too low.

I'd have to second Luke 3D's remarks. I saw a shootout in another forum between the Aiptek and the Gsmart 3 and the Gsmart won hands down. It may cost a little more, but I can't wait to get one.

I have heard a lot about these Mustek Gsmart Mini 2 digital cameras but I can't find a place that sells them in the US. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
