ok guys this is the little heli everyone is talking about ! im talking about the picco z heli!

after reading many good review on this i decided to get one for myself after all at $30 a pop i had nothing to lose!,the picco z is a VERY small 2 ch heli it flys up and spins left right, it constantly hovers forward, it comes with a short range infrared controller that has a built in charger! also it comes with 2 spare tail blades n 3 metal tacks that you put on the nose for faster forward hovers, this thing is kinda hard to fly at a full charge it seems to spin like crazy, don't get discouraged just trim it out and after a minute it will level itself out, although this thing isnt as fun as my other helis it is a good heli to just relax and fool around with, also did i mention it is VERY durable?

the good

very small
quite stable
very durable
very affordable
built in charger cable

the bad

kind of hard to control , tail is a pain! since the thing dosnt have a gyro
only 2 channels
short range

somewhat short flying time i get about 3 mins (but will probaly get more after more cycles)

heres a short video! http://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i166/zerogx2000/?action=view¤t=MVI_4516.flv&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1

in conclusion for $30 you simply connot go wrong! buy one for yourself and someone else

get it here http://www.radioshack.com/sm-2-channel-infrared-picco-z-mini-helicopter--pi-2431387.html or at a local Toys r us

I bought one shortly after reading this review....it is a slick little bird...

I haven't broke anything yet....but give me enough stick time...it's inevitably going to happen....

like mentioned above...$30...can't go wrong....although...now....I have noticed for Radio Shack online store to be out of stock....

You can still pick one up at HobbyTron. [If you order by Dec 31, 2006, you can get $5 off with this coupon code: HTPZC]

Heli-direct.com has package deals. They have another version, but the heli is 100% the same, the controller is slightly different. I have a Pico-Z and the heli-direct version and they fly the same. Heli-direct.com has package deals for 1, 2 or three packaged heli's on different channels for around $30.00 each. I picked some up as gifts. I have flown the heck out of my Radio Shack Z and have not managed to break anything (even though I have hit every wall, ceiling and lamp we have).

Some of the non-Silverlit versions of the Picco Z have better flight times. We have 1 Silverlit and 3 no-name knock-offs. The knock-offs fly for 6-8 minutes -- about twice as long as the Silverlit. The knock-offs also deplete the transmitter/charger batteries more quickly. This makes me think the knock-offs have a larger-capacity lipo in the heli.

We find the Picco Z is easier to fly if you hand launch it rather than try to ROG (rise off ground). This avoids much of the unwanted spinning that occurs as the rotor comes up to speed. Just rev up to about 3/4 throttle and release the heli with a slight forward tilt. If you want to ROG, I find it works best to get the rotor up to speed as quickly as possible, rather than gradually.

The amount and direction of spinning is directly related to rotor speed. So if you have the heli trimmed to hold its heading at say, 3/4 throttle, and then you increase or decrease the throttle, it will begin spinning in one direction or the other. You have to compensate with the right stick. Also, because of torque effects, turning to the right is rather gradual while turning to the left can be quite abrupt. Right turns are therefore easier to control.

The helis lose their trim setting when you shut them off. So the first thing I do after turning on the TX and the heli is give the TX about 10 clicks of right trim. This gets the trim in the ballpark, and I can tweak it from there.

The amount of nose weight supplied with our knock-offs is not nearly enough for forward flight. I ended up with a small amount of solder taped to the nose.

All in all, these are great fun. Everyone from my 16-year old neice to my 81-year old father can fly them.

- Jeff
