I have a question for someone familiar with the HP VT 21 4 stroke engines.

I recently bought this engine at a swap meet. It is in great shape, like new. I looked at Mecoa.com for some information about this Austrian made engine that Mecoa now has the rights to. They state that this engine MUST use 2 cycle fuel that contains only 5-10% nitro and MUST contain approximately 22% oil.

Is this correct? Has anyone else run these engines and if so what do you use? How has the engine run with your fuel / oil mixture?

If I need to mix the fuel with castor oil where can I find it? I did not see any listed on Tower Hobbies web site.

Finally, how do you accurately add the appropriate amount of oil to the fuel?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Farbs,
you can call Mecoa and verify.
The HP VT 21 and 49 engines have a unique rotary valve intake. If it is a plain bushing rotary valve it needs that amount of oil with a fair amount of it being castor. Some of the control line fuels on the market work well with these engines. 5-10% nitro is great, 20-23% oil is great with a fair amount of castor.
If your engine has the bearing rotary valve, the same amount of total oil is fine but you can get away with a little less castor in the mix.

If you know how much oil the fuel you are using currently has, it is a simple matter to add aprox 1.28 oz of oil to the gallon for every percentage point increase you want to add to the oil content. Example: if you want to add 2% more oil to your existing fuel, you need to add 2.56 oz of oil to the gallon.

Hope this helps.

Fuelman,

Thanks for the information. That helps a lot. I would have never thought about using control line fuel. I'll look into it.

Thanks again.

Farbs,
I should have been a bit clearer on the control line fuels.
The ones with a synthetic / castor blend at 5 or 10% nitro.

The Control line fuels that are 25% to 29% all castor are not as suitable for your VT 21 as the ones that are 22% or 23% total oil with a castor/ synthetic blend, in our case some of our (Cooper's)CL fuels contain a 50/50 blend with a 23% total oil. Many other companies offer a good CL blend in very similar ratios. Maybe in your area Powermaster or Wildcat has an offering. The Sig Champion line is also another choice

In any case, (In my opinion), I would never run in that engine a fuel containing less than 4% castor oil with the balance being synthetic. More castor than that is preferable in that design. An all synthetic fuel should never be run in the VT series engines if longevity is a concern.
