I would be vary carefull using lipos I hope you take them out when charging. I know of a few that have burned the plane up during the charge and from the viberation of a gas engine. I,m using the FROMECO's Lion the are more stable than the Lipos.

Your concern is noted. I've got literally hundreds of gas flights (26cc-150cc) using Lipos for both receiver and ignition, with zero failures. Yes, I pull them to charge. I also pull my Li-ions to charge. To do otherwise would be foolish.

On the Lipos, Duralite is selling them as well for use in gas/turbine and top-level fliers like Jason Noll and Andrew Jesky are using them (Lipos - not brand specific) in their gas airplanes with good succes. As always, YMMV.

Guess it is just a matter of what you're comfortable with.

FWIW, Scott has been flying for many, many years and does several product reviews for a popular magazine. He has been using lipos almost exclusively on all his projects without incident.

Good choice! I heard about a week ago that they had already sold over half of their stock of them...

Who is running a cannister on their's??? I want to try a can on mine since this plane is designed for it. I have a Slimline Pitts and from what I read a MTW can and header is the same weight so... I mean it would be no MORE than a 2 oz weight penalty factoring in the balsa sheeting and cannister mount and all. I mean comparing everything it takes to run a can. Cannister, header, coupler, clamps, balsa sheeting to direct airflow and cannister mount versus a Slimline pitts.

Mark what would the weight penalty be or would their be one??? Also what would the RPM do??? I have a DA with 3 gallons through it with Slimline pitts and get 6,600 RPM with a Mejzlik 23x8. Would a cannister setup cause me to loose any RPM at all??? Could it gain any??? I know the full pipe would, but CG is way off and it would only like to run half to wide out then. I do not want a full pipe.

Comments please.

Thanks for the parts list.... I'm pricing out my first gas plane and wasn't sure exactly what I needed for batteries, regulators, etc... Do these products come with decent instructions? I'm pretty comfortable with this stuff, but a little written expertise sure does help.

Well I had a day to work on the Extra and she is almost done. I have to cut the cowl yet and set the radio mixs and rates and she ready to fly. I started taking some pics and only got one before my camera batterys went dead. I will post some more pics later tonight to show off my Bad Brad Graphics. Still have the cowl yet to go. Hope to fly it this week if the weather gets better. I think the checker boards look good. Brad has some good ideas. Give him a call he can help make your bird stand out. The cowl will have the DA logo across the top like everybody does and then the Powered by DA 50 on the side. I will shoot some outdoor pics this week and put them up for all to see. I have to get some new axels when I tighened mine up they snaped off like nothing. the metal was weak. I think I will put the Lightwight ones on from Troy Built models. See ya!! Cowls fitted now just need to due a little more triming and fileing to get it just right. Hope to fly it this week some time. Brad I will get you some good pics taken outside with it all togather soon!! Hey chicken stick rick this is your engine Thanks!!!

Hey Guys,

I have been flying my 260 for a two weekends now, and I am absolutely love it. Rolls are very axial, landings are very slow and stable. It is a very easy and fun plane to fly. Ready to fly weight on mine is a mere 16lbs 2 oz, this is with NiMH batteries too! I plane to go carbon on the landing gear, wing tubes, stab tubes, and AW is saying that I can save 1-1.25 lbs! That would make this thing a rocket. Anyhow, balance was dead on with no adjustments.

I do have a few tips you guys should look out for though. The recommended aileron throw is 2.5" up and down for low rates. Now this was way too touchy for low rates in my opinion. Maybe I am just not so hot a pilot, but it just didn't feel right. Landed with no incident, and got used to it, but it was just way too quick. I am guessing around a 540-720 degree/sec roll rate on LOW.. If you want to stick with the low rate, dial in some expo. It was manageable with about 40% expo, and now it feels like a good hi rate in my opinion. So if you stick with recommended settings (which aren't bad, just too much for my taste and compared to past models), expect it to roll fast. Another thing to note is the pull pull linkage on the rudder. The aluminum clevises that mount to the servo arms just don't hold. I mean, was I supposed to solder them down? I think not, and the instructions don't mention any special techniques. Anyhow, I have been flying just the basic IMAC sequence and some basic aerobatics to get used to the bird and the arm always pops off and I have to make a crooked landing as well as a really rough roll out since it is hard to fight the left turning tendencies with no right rudder. I am out to the hobby store tomorrow to replace these with ball links.

Besides these two problems, everything else about the plane is working out great. Now to get this thing dialed in. Thanks AW for a great plane, and by far the best customer service I have ever experienced from an ARF manufacturer. I was lucky that they were at my field for my maiden, so they checked out the entire plane for me and gave me the go ahead. Great experience. I hope everyone else is enjoying their Extra.

BTW nice graphics lazy eight.

Here is what my cut out looks like for the stock muffler. Much lighter than a pitts and I think it looks fine!

Looks good Zope_pope. What aluminum arms are you refuring to on the rudder?? Here is mine with the DA muffler installed I need to trim a little more in one spot its hitting the cowl put its pretty close to how its going to look. I cut mine out a bit more than you did. See my rudder install???
