After a big discussion, the conclusion was that the HPI Nitro RS4 3 18SS Kit is a much better buy than the HPI Nitro RS4 3 Evo. So the next logical question for someone that has no experience in building a kit, is "how disassembled is this car?"

Is it all tiny bits and pieces? I’ve never seen a Kit box before. My Volcano STX was RTR of course, and although I have some experience in disassembling the gear box and the engine, or fixing a few problems caused by crashes, I don’t feel that confident that I’ll be able to built this car, cause I don’t know what to expect in the box.

Does anyone have a picture? Or can anyone describe what’s in the box? Or the build process?

Thanks

This kit is layed out great!!
Yes this car is completely disassembled and you have to put in every screw, but this is good because when something breaks, you know exacly how to remove it and put it back in.

The directions are very easy to understand and even a retard can put this kit together. the whole kit is broken up into steps. All the major pieces in step A are in a seperate bag labled "step A" so you don't have to go looking around or a microscopic screw or piece.

Just remember not to open any bag untill you can assemble the whole step, so you don't lose anything.
Be careful opening the bags because I ripped a bag open and didn't notice the ball bearing for the two speed tranny. Needless to say I lost it.

You could assemble this kit in a day and a half. I did a few steps a day after work and took me 3 days

You can see the exact intruction manuel for this kit if you go to www.hpiracing.com On the left side of the page, click on "instuctions" then click on "nitro RS4 3 18SS" the first one on the list

hey r car
if you can turn a screwdriver and read you shouldn`t have any problems with this kit.
i`m building it now.
yes there is alot of little bits and pieces but they are in bags. you just follow the book.
the book tells you. open bag A. look at book to see where the parts go from bag A in what order.
and so on down the line.
take my word on it. you`ll enjoy building. this way you know whats in the car and how everything works.
i will never buy a RTR again. only kits.
sorry i don`t have any pictures.
when you build. just make sure you have a clean work area. and something to put the parts in as you work.
i use a little tin box to put the parts in that i`m working on.

the 18ss kit is very easy to build, i had never even held an rc car like an RS4 before, and i opened up the box and put it together, taking it apart is easy, its hard to forget what goes where, very simple car, i just suggest getting a failsafe, getting new fuel line than what is provided, getting a fuel filter, and some threadlock, hpi's fuel line lengths in the manual are retardedly short

overall, tis very easy

well since it was my first, and it was nitro, i had some issues with it to, i will say
-dont follow the insturctions on throttle linkage length, i did this and my car started up at 50% throttle
-dont follow the turnbuckle length in the insturctions, adjust it correctly, at least by eye
-and trash the d-compound tires asap, i hate them

thats all i can think of for now

the d compound tires went bald within the first 5 runs.
I bought the v grooved radials that have the standard compound and they look brand new after 10 + runs.

I read a tip somewere, get un belted tires, turn them inside out and run a strip of duct tape on them. works great!!

I am happy to say that I placed an order for 2 HPI Nitro RS4 3 18SS Kit and 2 Futaba 2PH 2-Channel AM/2 S3003 Servos, for me and for a friend of mine. In 2 to 6 weeks, I'll have the experience of building my first rc car kit.

thedub88
Can you provide a link for the v grooved radials tires? Anyone else has a suggestion for good tires for my new HPI?

hey guys
ok i finished building and painting this weekend.
i ran 5 tanks thru it.
the first tank gave me a little problem.
when i fired it up for the first time.
i had fuel leaking out of the head.
so i thought the head wasn`t tighten down.
i pulled head. found everything fine.
put it back on. and still leaking fuel.
so i was looking down the head while i tried to start it.
it turned out to be the glow plug copper gasket was egged shaped.
it could of been my fault. when i got the kit one of the first things i did
was remove the glow plug and add some after run oil in it.
the only problem after that is i can`t get it to shift into second gear.
i might of put the wrong spring in there. i took apart the trans and added the other spring from the kit but i didn`t run it after that.
first spring was the black one.(heavier) i tired adjusting it. no good. so now i got the silver spring in.(lighter).
and yes the stock tires are garbage. after 4 tanks of just running it easy. they are wearing out. i will need to get foams.

for the shift screw, make sure you are in the right hole thing to adjust the set scerw, now set it at 3.5 turns our from bottom and locktite it in place (be really careful not to get locktite in the place where the driver fits into) i locktited line and it ahs been in the same palce for at least 4 months, use the black spring also, and if you dont locktite it, the vibrations cause it to back and and to not shift at all

hey apollo
yes i`m sure i`m in the right hole. i pulled the trans with spur gears out. i didn`t want to try and get it out of that hole and lose that ball. so i pulled the gear case out.
i tried the black spring first. i tried adjusting it. everywhere from 2 turns out to 4 turns out. any more that and the darn spring and ball will fall out.
i still couldn`t get it to shift. so thats why i put in the silver spring in. right now its at 2.5 truns out. but i won`t be able to play with it until the weekend.

set it at 3.0-3.5 turns out with the black spring and locktite the set screw in palce, just dont get locktite in the channel on the set screw, you will never get it out again, mine shifts exactly the same as it did 4 months ago
