RE: "THE SOUND"....

I agree. I really don't care for the sound of gas motors. For one thing most folks are usually too cheap to spend the $100+ bucks that it costs to put a decent muffler/pipe on the things. Most of the times I am at the field and a gasser is flying, I can't have a conversation in the pit area, despite the fact that the model is usuall a couple of hundred feet or more a way. The matchbox size mufflers most of them come with are usually way over 100 decibles.
All of that said, alcohol is inherently quieter. The flame front does not travel as fast. Because of the rich nature of the ratio the resulting burn is less rapid, which produces a quieter pop. Of course a poorly muffled glow motor can be almost as obnoxious.
Also, gassers produce obnoxious, destructive vibration that eats radios, switches, nuts, bolts, etc. Some folks like them, and I guess they have their place in really large applications, but having tried them, they are not MY bag.

Pesonally, I think power:weight is the most useful comparison for us.

I don't care how powerful an engine is. If it won't stay running or throttle up quickly, it is completely useless. I'm not flying in timed speed events, so ultimate power production is not the prime consideration for me.

I could care less about the sound. I like to fly, and fly a lot, and never have to even think about the engine. The sound the engine makes is so far down the list its not even a consideration for me.

I dont like to clean oil off my plane, I dont like deadsticks, I dont like to have to fiddle with the engine everytime I go out. etc. etc. Considering all that, the sound the engine makes is kind of trivial....

What are you doing with your glow engines that causes you so much trouble?

I can't remember the last time I had to turn a needle or had an unexpected deadstick with one of my glow-powered planes.

Both my 2-strokes and 4-strokes are pretty muchg set and forget. If one stops it's only because I've used every bit of fuel in the tank and if a needle setting changes it's due to a fuel-system problem.

I've got a gasser too, but it's no more or less reliable than my glow engines.

And some folks marvel at how their piano never needed retuning in 30 years. Right...<G>

I just recently went to a gas engine (Zenoah G26) .. Much heavier than the Saito FS 125 but I'm putting it in the Super Stearman which would need over a pound of lead in the nose with the Saito. I love my Saitos but in this case if I have to add that much weight I figured I would add it as engine instead of lead. We'll see if I can recoup my cost in fuel savings.

There are some applications, such as yours, where a gas engine really shines at its best.

I love and own all types of engines, except a turbine. Hopefully that will change one of these days. I would love to own a turbine, but just haven't been able to justify the price as yet. I have several other hobbies, so my hobby money is divided between them. Otherwise, I would own a turbine right now.

I am with you Ed. I consider myself fortunate that I can derive pleasure from just about any engine I get my hands on, regardless of what it burns, how it ignites it, or how many strokes (if any).
