Ok... the motor comes with all 3 shims installed to help make the breakin easier (20% would be ideal for breakin). These motors have a tight pinch.

Once it is broken in, you remove the shims not needed. If you run 30% then use the thicker .3mm shim only. 20% use the .2mm only & less than 20% use the .1mm shim.

Hope this helps.

Mark

Thank you yes that helps a bunch. i have traxxas 20% Top Fuel i was thinking about using for the break in, but if i should use a certain brand to get better results then i'll use the recomended fuel. I know some manufactures require using there fuel or the warrany on there engine is voided. Thank you for the explination, really appriciate it.

Thank you for the manual saved a copy of it and have read through it. Alot different procedure then breaking in a traxxas engine. But i'm sure its a much better engine. I will probably get an STS engine for T-Maxx as well the TRX 3.3 engine doesnt seem to have the power i thought it would. I was expecting my T-Maxx to pop wheelies but this is not the case.

Also, don't forget to shim the head correctly. STS motors have 3 shims installed from the factory to help the break in process.... they are .1mm for low nitro content up to 20%, .2mm for 25% & .3mm for 30%+

Remove the shims not needed after the break-in. Hot long glow plug is best for break-in for the rich setting. Then med long plug for 20-25% & cold long plug for 30% after break-in.

46u, you my boy Blue!!, let me know if you agree with this

Mark

Right now all I have is the STS D 21 B in my buggy but the instructions for it are the same, as the 28 but do not know if they differ on the 30? By instructions say 0.3mm for up to 20%, 25% 0.4mm (+-0.1mm) 30% 0.5mm (+-0.1mm). Rule of thumb up to 20% run medium plug and anything higher medium cold or cold. Keep in mind there are variables in which plug to use like weather. I do not recommend using OS plugs in anything but OS engines, as they are shorter then other plugs. I agree 100% with Mark you need to run the long plug!

Really i was wondering why my cars got so soiled after using that fuel. it doesnt seem to be that great. Seems that when i run the 30% blue thunder in the trx 3.3 engine it performs alot better, it has 10% castor content it says on the bottle. I noticed the the traxxas fuel container doesnt state anywere on it, the castor content only nitro percent. i dont have very much of it left. So i will most likely burn it up in my associated NTC3.

Well i dont want to use a fuel that would not be good for the engine especially since it is new. What fuel do you recomend for the STS engine. i want to get the best performance out of the engine ,but also want it to be protected as far as lubrication goes. My Saito GK .72 four stroke engine on my trainner requires special blended fuel with synthetic oil no castor content but its only 15% nitro too.

So as i was wondering i really would like to get a good grade of fuel to break it in. I imagine after break in the Blue thunder fuel will be ok but i hear alot of bad things about that fuel as well. the best fuel i bought a few months back was trinity Monster fuel it was 31% nitro fuel and i figure that is way it was so great not sure what the lubrication properties were. very good fuel and was used up very quickly, but also was very expensive.

There are so many fuels out there i was thinking O'donnell would be a good one to try out but not sure about that yet probably should do some reasearching on Rc fuels i'm sure there is a web site out there that has some information about fuels.

I run O’Donnell 20% nitro content but do not like their RTR to much oil. O’Donnell does not list there oil content either but I can sure tell if it is to high just from running and tuning. Keep in mind most fuel manufactures have more then one blend and most has to do with oil content.

Some do not agree with this but from experience I do.

Why 8% to 12% Oil

Using high oil content fuels in fuel car engines won't provide improved engine life, as some would expect. Through extensive testing we've discovered the point of diminishing return as far as oil content to engine life is actually around 8% for most car engines. In other words any more oil than 8% in the fuel does noting to improve the life of a car engine. In fact the secondary effects of high oil content fuels can actually cause engine damage by encouraging over lean runs. Here's how.

Using high oil content fuel causes a car engine to be unresponsive during acceleration acting as if the engine were running rich. Typically when using high oil content fuel, in order to get crisp acceleration and response, an engine will need to be adjusted overly lean. In addition the high oil content prevents lean bog when an engine is over-leaned thus allowing the engine to run at this lean setting without the customary telltale lean bog warning letting you know the engine is overheating.

In summary, high oil content fuels don't give added protection. The point of diminishing return from a protection standpoint in a gas car application is about 8% oil depending on the oil type and engine. Anymore oil than this doesn't offer added protection and has potential secondary effects that reduce performance and can actually cause you to over lean your engine in an attempt to get crisp throttle response and acceleration. Do yourself a favor and follow these two rules:

Rule #1- Always use a high quality fresh fuel designed specifically for fuel car use that has between 8% and 12% oil preferably with at least some castor in it

Rule #2 - Don't use airplane fuels or any other type of fuels that have over 15% oil in your gas car engine.

Make sure you get the RACE blend! Now I am sure there are other good fuels out there as well as some not so good but after trying many when I started using O’Donnell race blend I liked it and I stuck with it. I will tell you I wish I had a dollar for every one I go to try O’Donnell that was running Traxxas and stuck with O’Donnell. Like I said only use their RACE blend.

This is O'Donnell Racing Fuel.
This is four one-gallon bottles of 20% nitromethane glow fuel.

FEATURES: Specially formulated fuel blend for competition radio controlled,
glow powered cars and trucks.
O'Donnel Racing fuel contains an advanced lubricant package which
provides engine protection equivalent to that of conventional
lubricants that have an 18% lubricant content. This optimizes
performance and maximizes engine life.

INCLUDES: Four One-Gallon Plastic Bottles of O'Donnell 20% Racing Fuel

Now in this statement there saying that the fuel has an equivalent of 18 % Lubricant content is there another type of Odonnels fuel?

as you said between 8% and 12% oil content only reason i ask. tower hobbies may be mistakin or have misprinted there information.

information was from tower hobbies web site.

Try reading it again as it says PROVIDES engine protection EQUIVALENT to that of conventional Lubricants that have an 18% lubricant content. It does not say it has 18% says equivalent to.

If all you do is bash I would get the 30 if you race 28 why because all race sanction and a lot of tracks have a limit of 28.

Yes no question i will get the fuel been reading this other post about it and seems it is the fuel to get.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5144853/anchors_5144863/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#5144863

Was wondering if there is a place i could find this fuel cheaper then tower hobbies unfortunatly living in this mountain town without a LHS kinda puts me to a disadvatage to gettting fuels easily. i have to order them, Any suggestion on a web site that has better deals for fuel.
