Was reading this amazing post and wondering if an OS .61 Four stroke would be suite to fly this plane? I have on in my shop doing nothing at the moment.

I think you will be fine with that four stroke. I fly mine with a Thunder tiger 46 pro and I got tired of the hand launching and added landing gear from a 4* 120 and a stearable nose gear. People laugh when I taxi out but when it's in the air everyone wants to fly it.

Jet,
Your fourstroke would be a blast on the giant delta!!!

My RCU Gallery pic of the newer airfoi isn't quite working right. I'll try to get a decent one posted to my web page. The newer airfoil makes a big difference in performance...much more effiecent...
Here's a semi-decent pic of the "Improved" airfoil.

Go for it!!

Keep us posted...and take pics!!!

Best of luck!

One more update not shown...

Move the RUDDER hinge line back to the trailing edge...as far back as you can....it's not very effective on my original design...tooo close to the center of mass of the wing...kinda "slips" sideways rather than push the tail around.

Good Luck!!

Will this work - I have a place that I can get 4' x 8' x 2" foam sheet. If I cut the wing out as one whole piece and still run the yard sticks down the center, do you think it will fly ok?

I'm also considering running spars through the wing if I go with a one piece wing cut out. And of course I will have to hot wire cut the air foil shape.

Jet,

I used two rows of 3 inch wide strips of strapping tape for my "psudo-spar" on the original design, from tip to tip where they turn into the leading edge, the other half way up the leading edge at the "seam". I cranked and banked as hard as I could and the wing never folded.

I would recommend at least sinking a 48 inch length spar centered.....no more than 3/8 square. This thing is very "glider-like" wing loading so extra spar = extra weight.

Also, if your thinking of making a tri-gear you can incorperate the gear into a spar on the underside. Retracts would be even cooler...but then your getting away from the simplicty of the whole thing....

Keep it simple....and light....you'll fly it harder....it will make you look better than you are...a real confidence booster...for less than $10 bux an airframe!!! You can't beat it with a stick....this is "tear up the sky" FUN!!!

Good Luck!!

I'm going to go with your advice and put in a center spar right on the CG so I can attach landing gear as shown in your image. I'll also put a steerable nose gear right behind the engine.

The 4' x 8' x 2" foam sheet is going to cost me $20, but I think the plane will be worth it considering all the fun people are claiming which this Giant Delta.

I'm also going to construct a scale down version of your hot wire bow that is only 8" wide so I can cut the airfoil out easier. Do a little sanding afterwards and then do the rigging on it. Not sure if it will be ready by Sat. but I'm hoping first flight to be Sunday. I will take some pictures of the construction and flight. Can't wait to see the club guys faces when I bring this thing out on the field.

thanks,

JR

No Giant Delta for me this weekend. I pulled up to the foam company today and they said I needed to pre-order my requested 2" thick foam sheet. They would put the order in and take 2 days to cut. The lady I spoke to over the phone the other day did not mention the wait time. They are not open on the weekends so I'll have to wait until Monday.

Oh well, guess I will be flying my F-16 this weekend instead.

Ha Herb...this is the first time I have ever read all 5 pages of postings and it is such a kick to see all the different ideas floating around. I plan on starting one as soon as Home Deposite gets some in. It is so cool to see such a simple idea do so well in the air. You have truely sparked the minds of many people. I'll just bet you had no idea it was going to take off like it has ...did you?
I plan on doing a simple plane and see what comes out of it because I almost always over build or over design it which goes against the KISS theory you came up with.
Thanks for such a cool idea.

I saw this thread some time ago, but now that I have read throught those 3 pages I'm wanting to build one right now also!
There's no doubt it must be great to make a 86-100" (218-254cm) wingspan 10$ plane in a weekend!
Basically, I wanted to make mine look a bit scale, (maybe like that Avro Vulcan or a Horten, do you guys know of other good planes?), and build it so that it could fly very, very slow. I mean I would just love to make eye-level passes so slow it seems its never going to arrive, but I still don't have much idea of how.
Could any of you guys give me an idea of how it performs both in slow and aerobatic flight, landings, etc?

who has built one by laminating 1" foam instead of using 2"?

JCaste-
Just build it and see what you are missing!!! Flies great slow or fast. It will do anything you want it to. Mine has a Tower .75 and the performance is awesome!! Landings are so smooth. Just a little blip of throttle and it's flying again. I can bring it in so slow and make it so the wheels just kiss the ground. SOOO easy.....just line her up with the runway, chop the throttle, easy on the elevator, easy now, here she comes.............she's coming.........here she is......little elevator now.......smooth flare....perfect!!! I even built a smaller 48" one for my .40 la. I used coro-plast for the control surfaces on that one.
