Yep, so did I. I am still trying to decide on an engine though, even after reading through all 148 pages of the Giles thread!

For me, the Katana weighing a little under 10 pounds with an OS 1.60FX and Perry VP-30 pump make a lively and nearly ideal 3D combination. I use that same pumped OS 1.60FX setup in the Giles and the Katana. The Katana weighs about 3/4 pound less.

Rocketman how old is your Giles I was reading a review and they said the one they where testing was the newest version with bigger flight control is was covered differently also they said one had sheeted foam wings the review was from 2006 but I see at ultra-rc and OMP they show the giles in the same pattern as your picture

You will find one version of the giles now, if you can even find one. OMP had a few about a month ago and was looking to get rid of them fast. I posted the sheeted wing/larger control surface question in the giles thread and Ultra RC replied that there was never a different version with small flight controls, so I'm not sure where that came from. There are two color schemes though, which both have the same airframe. -Greg

I know there are 2 versions they show both on Ultra RC's website

http://www.ultra-rc.com/products/glow/index.htm

http://www.ultra-rc.com/products/giles/index.htm

http://www.ultra-rc.com/products/gilesNS/index.htm

one say new scheme if you look you can see the new version has bigger flight controls but they list both as built up balsa wings

I see what your talking about both on Ultra's website are the same airfrmane.

But I was just looking at the review again it appears the there were two verison with the wavey cover scheme if you look at the wavey one in the review you can see the ailerons are about 2'' shorter then the wavey scheme on Ultra's website now. That must be where the confusion is it appears the the latest large flight control plane came in two cover schemes and the older smaller flight control came in the wavey cover scheme
remember the review is in 2006

Without getting tonnes of other engine options since I am aware of the weight difference,... it's not much. I was wondering what the groups thoughts where for using a Fuji 43EI. I have this engine available on the bench. It has good power and weighs 3.6 pounds with muffler and Ignition. Remember this is then newest version of the engine. It pulls at least 20 pounds of thrust. I get about 7400 with a 20x8 prop. The overall airframe weight will be low.
Assuming it fits in the cowl (length to the prop nut,..)
I wouldn't be a 3D nut but would try a few tricks here and there.
I was pricing out an OS 1.6 but I may need to reuse some equipment here. If the Fuji does not fit in the cowl the only option would be to cut the engine box. Doable but not my first choice. In that case I will spend the extra for another engine.

And on that note,... for an OS 1.6. Is it a fuel hawg? My Saito 82A, although great power goes through so much glow that I swore I would not get a bigger glow engine.
Anyone run a 26 gas with this.

geoff

My two 1.60's actually started using LESS fuel when I pumped them. It has happened to others as well, but I find it strange because I pumped the engines so that I could get them to run richer with pitts pipes!?!?! I estimate that they now use about 1oz per minute.

I found the post by Ultra RC to the question when I asked it (no small feat since the search engine on here sucks ). Two color schemes, same airframe. The RCU review is the only place that I have seen a sheeted wing version with smaller control surfaces, so I don't know what is up with that. My Katana has 2KRC.com written on the wing bags and they have a picture of the giles on their website. Maybe they used to make that version for Creek Hobbies.

To all it may concern:

I will post this information once. Ultra-RC is being controlled by a new company.

We are selling the remaining Ultra inventory via eBay. We are not going to produce any new products. We do have, and will continue to have, replacement parts for all the recent Ultra planes, while supplies last.

Last, we will not be monitoring posts here on RCU for information pertaining to orders or stock status, etc. If you would like to receive this information, please email us at the above email. You questions will be answered within 24 hours.

Ultra Sales:
In regards to the "new company", are you a clearance house that is just liquidating the inventory of a bankrupt company ? Or will Ultra be re-emerging as a new company ? If there are quality issues with the current batch of planes being sent, can we expect this to be made right by you ? Please forgive all the questions, I'd still like to have a Katana, but I'm just a little nervous after my last experience.

Has anyone seen any footage of the KATANA other than the "No fear" vid? Got one coming on the 30th and curious to see more of the flight characteristics.
