Yes, I noticed it but I quit reading it because I didn't intend to use it.
I avoid the oddities and inadequacies found in many ARF tail wheel assemblies by replacing them with a Sullivan Tailwheel Bracket. For the Katana-X you should use the Sullivan that is intended for 10 to 22 pound planes. There are other choices out there but I prefer the light weight, easy to install Sullivan.

Hey guys nice thread that you have going on great info! I have an Evolution 35GT2 that came off of my Extreme Flight Yak 74". Do you all think this 35cc gasser on a es composites tuned pipe would be too much for the Katana. How does it 3D?

Ricardo

ricardo- your evolution should work fine with this plane. except for the main landing gear, this is an awesome machine. I just purchased 2 more of these katana's on ebay and from ultra,s website...got it the next day! I crashed the one i had last weekend. the plane flies so well it's easy to forget you still have to pilot it. it 3d's well and I'm most impressed with its tracking. the knife edges are so easy with virtually no coupling at all . no mixing neccessary. I have a saito 180 in my katana and of course I would recommend it, but since this airframe is so light, there is a wide range of engines short of 40 cc that would work well. On the issue with the main gear I recommend refitting with graphtech carbon fiber style # 122. I will post pics of the installation if anyone is interested since they are to be refitted in my new katana. Stan

Ok edgy here's the pictures and a short description of how I did it . First I cut away the balsa behind the firewall exposing the ply deck below leaving enough on the sides to cover the landing gear taper. Then I cut the sides of the pipe tunnel down to match. Next I cut a piece of 1/4 inch plywood the shape of my opening, installed 3-8/32 blind nuts, then glued it in place with epoxy. don't forget to drill holes in the plywood below to accept the blind nuts and and mounting screws. I then installed a 1/8 in ply doubler behind the firewall and a 1/16 in balsa doubler at the rear of the LG plate. finally, I filled in the remaining open spaces with balsa then covered and/or coated them with epoxy. I hope this can help , Stan

I have just ordered some gear from GraphTech as well after my stock gear broke the upper ply former in the fuse. They were starting to twist a bit anyway as the upper bolt that holds the gear in was begining to wobble out. I fly off of a fairly rough field, but the stock gear sucks anyway. It has been the only "bad" aspect of this plane that I have found, it is still a trmendous flyer and people will literally stop what they are doing to watch when I take this one up. It does just amazing rolling harriers, it makes me look better then I really think that I am!

Joey-Your right about the rolling harriers. I'm still learning the menuever and I can almost make a full circle before falling out. That's more than any other plane I have. I use the katana as my 3D trainer. It's a good confidence builder.

Re: Graphtech landing gear install,...
My LHS does not have the GraphTech landing gear. But they can get anything from Horizon and Great Planes. What would be a similar style gear to the #122 GraphTech from GP or Horizon.
Nice job BTW.

Geoff

Did some searching and the 122 graphtech is for "Hangar 9 Cap 1.20 ARF" So on the hanger 9 web site I do not see a 1.20 Cap. Is it the 27% Cap?

Geoff, your options are somewhat limited. The closest match I could come up with is landing gear from hangar 9s' funtana 100 ( pictured below ). It appears a little smaller all the way around but may work. I have a buddy who has this plane and I could check it out for shure this weekend. It would be nice since it's half the price of Graghtechs gear. I'll let you know. , Stan P.S., The 1.20 cap is discontinued and the 27% is to large.

I was looking at the Funtana 100 landing gear too. I can't see it being to wide at the top. So question is,... is it too low for a 20 inch prop? What is the height of the #122 landing gear?

Geoff-My freind with the funtana was sick over the weekend so I have to wait a little longer for those dimensions. As for the Graghtech gear, mounted as I have it, measures 13 1/2" from the center of the prop to the ground with stock wheels. That would give you 2 1/4" from the ground wow! , I think you can forget about the funtana gear with that prop.

Thanks bild,
I'm taking one of the gear legs to my LHS today to see if I can find either a thin CF rod to fit inside or,.. I was thinking maybe even a thin dowel might do it.
I may still replace with traditional gear. We'll see.

Also, has anyone noticed that the covering separates from the colour in places? The separated layer is clear leaving the colour of the covering stuck on the plane,.. and very difficult to remove after that.

Geoff
