I'll give the ys 1.10 a shot because it's sitting on my bench. I'm skeptical on how it will perform as well. I flew this engine with an APC 17/4W with 20/20 nitro on a Funtana two years back, and it was more than enough power for torque rolls and unlimited vert. performance. I remember giving quick squirts of throttle in high alpha flight and having to quickly retard the gas in level flight for fear of an overspeed flutter failure. However, that was at sea level and I'm now living in SLC, so time will tell I guess. I plan to upgrade my fuel quality and keep this thing super light in hopes of making up for some of this altitude change. The overall wing area and weight seem to be quite close to the Funtana, so that's why I chose this plane after I turned my Funtana into a yard dart. I was going to go cheap with a "1/4 scale" servo for the rudder (have the rest) so I could get the power and torque I need for cheap, but it looks like I'd better watch my ounces and grams!
Rocketman/bild: Thanks for the advise on the gear and everything else so far. It's really helpful to find someone who's allready done a build and has had this thing in the air.
Regards, Drew

Hi Edgy, the Ultra Katana's landing gear is only about an ounce and a half, so you are adding 3.7 ounces. Not a great deal since this plane is extremely light to start with. You may have to adjust your CG if you do not install the graphtec landing gear at the start. What are you powering the plane with? Stan

Hi Bild, Mine is electric powered, running on 13S1P A123 cells and 20x10 CF gas prop. i know the katana wont even feel the extra 3-4 ounces of the landing gear, but i'm still divided between getting CF tubes and a CF rod and build me a new leg or get the graphtech LG which i really like. i emailed graphtech for shipping and its gonna be $30 just to mail it here. What do you recommend?

So two things,.. first thanks to the folks in this forum for answering PM's I've sent and posts I'm made in this forum. Really a great help!!

Second, how has everyone found the covering on this plane? I spent some time ironing the covering smooth the day before taking her out to the field. It was a great improvement. After a few hours in the sun, it looked like it did before I started. I'll bump the iron heat up a touch and try again.

Ok, had it at the field again today. After putting it together I weighed it. It's a non digital fish scale and it showed more than 12 pounds but less than 12.5 pounds. It looked like 12 1/4 pounds. When I came home I put one 10 pound weight and one 2.5 pound weight on a line and weighed that with the same scale. It showed 12.5 pounds. So I have to believe I am within a few oz. So AUW = 12 pounds 4 ounces.
5 more flights today and one or two landings were a bit less soft than before,... no problem, it's holding fine.
What I need now for this plane are longer servo arms as for alpha type maneuvers the extra control surface would help. I did some harriers and elevators with some wing rock but it was very consistent. At times the rock went away,... nice!
On one take off I aimed the plane straight up at just over half throttle and it climbed, then I hit full throttle! I love it, one of the club members was laughing as he recognized the ridiculous vertical with the Fuji. In just seconds I have to level off because the plane is so high.
Can ya tell, I'm love'in it!

reefHawg,

Good grief!! I'd have to increase the weight of my Katana by 25% in order to equal the 12.25 pound weight of your Katana.

Mine weighs 9.75 pounds with an OS 1.60FX. Even though yours weighs considerably more it sounds like you may be getting good 3D performance however I can't help but believe that some 3D maneuvers may not be as good as they could be.

If you believe that you need longer servo arms for more control surface throw it may be because the Katana is still a little nose heavy. I believe you said you were setting your C.G. at 5 1/2 inches. My C.G. is located at 6 3/8 inches (suggested range is 5.25 to 6 inches) but it still feels a little nose heavy for 3D.
Earlier in this thread I typed "If someone has been bold enough to move the CG beyond 6 3/8 inches I'd like to know what the results were" but I got no replies. Looks like it'll be up to me to try it.

Edgy, I don't know much about E-planes so I can't give you input on the weight vs power issue. However, The main concern for me as far as the money goes is what do I stand to lose If my landing gear fails? 1- a cowl that can not be ordered seperately,2- an expensive prop and 3- an expensive muffler. enough reason for me! Not to mention the time involved making repairs. I know this because it all happened with my first Katana. Everything has risk, it's just about how much risk are you comfortable with. Like I said before, I think this plane is well worth the extra cash for the gear. Stan

Just like most other planes I have, a little ironing after the first few days takes care of that problem. it seems to get less and less wrinkles over time. The only thing that gets anoying is anywhere there are points. I noticed great planes started making rounded edges on their graghics. Iv'e used canopy glue for that and it holds up pretty good, and can be reaplied any time .

Yep, no question it's on the heavy side. I knew it would be. The plane is balanced (not on balancer, just rougly done with fingers a CG point) but could definately go with moving the CG back aways. Which I will be doing. As for the servo arms, I also should have mentioned that I think I am only getting about 45 degrees now. So regardless I'll be looking for more in the near future. It's still early, lots of tweaking to do!

Wow, I just did a search on ebay too and low and behold,... the Katana Ultra Ex is there. Buy now price of $220. The seller is Ultra-rc. So my bet is that he continues to get supply and sells them. Just goes through ebay and got out of the RC business. It's just a shipping business now. Good to know if something bad happens to my Katana.

The Kat has arrived, unpacked, no damage! Not sure which engine I will use. I am a fan of large 4-strokers and a Magnum 180 lies in my shop. It may not power the KAT out of a hover and that would not be acceptable. I prefer the sound of the 4-strokers overall . Using carbon fiber gear appears to be logical. Also I'm a fan of Sullivan tail wheel kits.

Thx!
