Seriously, I'm not teasing you all. I am self confessed, NOT a 3-D pilot. I can do some or most? of it but not low...

I watched the new owner fly the crap out of this KATANA yesterday during lunch. The wings stayed on and the plane looked the same after landing as it did on take-off. He was a happy camper, but also not a true 3-D pilot.

Tumbler is the guy who can dip and hold/hover the tail in the weeds, do walls, harriers, blendrers etc. Then again he is less than half my age and nearer a third He should be in the air with his this week.

Regards,

Eric.

Eric,

Come onnnnn, you aren't that old and I am not that young anymore.......I will be 30 next year!!!

I can't wait to try this thing out. The total weight with an O.S. 1.60 without a battery(waiting for that to come) was 9 lbs, 8ozs. That is just sick!!! That means with a saito 1.80 you could be under 9lbs!

Seriously, the only way to make it lighter is .......ummm there isn't..............buy a foamy if you want something lighter!!

Tumbler

Sounds like the Evolution 26 may be a choice for this plane also since it weighs less than the Giles. It was a little under powered on the Giles without a pipe, I wonder if you go go without the pipe on this plane since it's almost 2 pounds less. I hope those numbers are right. I'm going to have to head out the your field and see it in action soon. I've flown there as a guest and at your fun-flys this year. Very nice facility.

Lee,

2 Lbs is little extreme. The airframe I saw was lighter than the Giles, but it is more like 10-12ozs.

My bad I saw the 9lbs 8 oz and thought the Giles was like 12 with the gasser. Regardless it sounds like it's gonna be a great flying plane, like a big foamy at that weight. Do you know if he has any of the new Yaks in, maybe the 100cc version?

My Giles is about 10 1/2 lbs with a MVVS 1.6 and pipe. It IS a big foamy and thats how everyone who flys it describes it. I can't imagine it any lighter, but I won't complain.

I don't know about the Yaks..........best bet is email Ultra.

Eric, would you please expand on your carbon fiber rod landing gear reinforcement? Specifically which rod did you select (the solid or the thick-walled tube), what was the diameter?, what adhesives did you use?, where did you apply the adhesives?, where did you purchase your rods, any other info which might assist my fix on my Giles. Thanks

This must be alot different then Ulta-RC's 50 size I bought last year. It's probaly the worst plane I ever bought. It is an ARF,running a 72 Satio, just a white knucle flying plane, for me anyway. I've been flying for 10+ years so I'n not a beginner.I've tried rebalanceing it but that didn't help much either. Just a very touchy plane to fly. But I'm not giving up on it either.I hope to get it tamed someday.lol

I picked the tip up from the Giles 202 thread.

I have installed both the solid CG rod and CF tube. The diameter is 4.8-mm or 0.190" if you prefer. All are still working.

I used https://www.graphitestore.com/order_received.asp?order_id=735748

I make the length of the inserts just short of the retaining bolt. (It's too thin to drill for a 3-mm bolt). I only glue it at the top end with a couple of drops of medium CA. This set-up makes the legs harder to bend but still allows them to flex.

Regards,

Eric.

this is indeed a nice looking bird. I love the scheme and a Katana in this size range is going to be a good seller.

I think I need one now

Oh God, there is no comparison. The .40 size Katana is simply a sport plane. The Katana and Giles are in a class by themselves. I have yet to see any other planes this size that are able to keep the weight this low. If you have ever flown a foamy, imagine the floaty characteristics of one of them but the precision of a big gas plane as well. You can't ask for more fun. I know they have several new planes in the works, all using the same building techniques, so they are definetly an up and coming company!
