It's been a while since I've posted here. The Tigercat was finished about three months ago, but schedule conflicts kept us from getting together for the first flight. Today was a little hot, but a good day anyway, so we loaded up and went to the field.

Spent the first hour getting the YS-120's dialed in. They both run great, and with an short open pipe sound just like miniature versions of the R-2800's that power the real thing. We're swinging Master Airscrew 3-blade 15x6 props; the engine had no problem with them and they pull well. The only problem we have is with the retracts. The system doesn't seem to want to hold any pressure. There were no audible leaks, but we think the problem is in the cheesy retract valve supplied with the kit retracts. We never did get enough pressure to get the gear up, so we decided to do the maiden with gear down. That sort of surprised us, because the gear was working just fine on the bench.

Preflight was all good, so F82Fan taxied out an pointed her into the wind, which was about 10mph right down the runway. Put the throttles to her and off we went! She tracked right down the runway and lifted off with nary a wobble. First downwind turn was fine, she needed one click of right aileron and that was it. Airplane had plenty of control authority on low rates, so that's where we left it. Low flybys were a thing of beauty and the sound of the engines was nothing short of incredible. We did some stalls, she mushes in and just drops the nose. No pitch up with flaps down. All in all, she was solid as a rock. The first approach for landing was a little high and with about 20 degrees of flap, she just floated down the runway. Went around, the second landing was solid and predictable. We decided that the 20 flaps was enoughan engine out on final with more than that could cause a really quick roll...

We couldn't leave well enough alone, so we refueled and went again. Did some loops and aileron rolls on this flight, once again, no problems. About six or seven minutes into the flight, the left engine started going lean, and then flamed out. We heard it die, F82Fan caught it with the rudder and power on the right engine. He did one more circuit around the pattern on the right engine and touched down with no problem. That was enough excitement for one day, so now it's back to the shop to tweak the engines and replace the retract valve.

The landing gear was fine, no problem. We haven't fitted gear doors either.

All in all, a good day at the field.

Hi all,

congratulations for all your sucessfull maidens.

That are great news about our TIGERCATS.

On flight # 05 I also had an engine out of one of my G26´s but I didn´t realize it quickly and the CAT went down in a death roll.

Result: - fuselage broken, nascelles damaged and outer left wing damaged. No damage to engines, retracts, servos.

I already ordered the spares and in about 4 - 6 weeks the bird will be back in the air again.

What I am wondering about is the matter of fact that we have a lot of engine outs - all together.

It might be a problem of heating up the engines in flight.

We need to adjust the engines on the (very) rich side.

My engine out happened on the next flight after I leaned the right engine a little because it seemed rich to me.

This was my mistake !!!

So be carefull to keep the enignes on the rich side !

Cheers, Detlef

Hi all,

On flight # 05 I also had an engine out of one of my G26´s but I didn´t realize it quickly and the CAT went down in a death roll.

My condolences on your loss.

I would suggest to anyone flying one of these that you look into the Twinsync.
I tested one in a Dual Ace and it worked flawlessly. I could run up engines individually, and then together just by flippng a three way switch.
More importantly, on a high speed fly by and pull up an engine quit (muffler pressure line came off). Before I could react to what had happened the Twinsync immediately pulled the running engine to idle. No snaps or death rolls, just slow flight straight ahead. Then a recovery and landing with full control of the running engine.
So far all the T-Cat crashes reported seem to have come from engine out situations that got out of hand before the pilot could react.
To me this seems like buying an insurance policy on the inevitable.

BTW, the Twinsync also eliminated yaw on takeoff due to slight mismatches in rpm.

Hi Drifter,

thanks for info. I have already ordered a twinsynch unit.

But anyway for me it is more important to exclude engine-outs.

It sounds curious for me that we have so many engine outs on G26´s and G20´s in our TC´s

We need to investigate for the reasons.

Normally G20´s or G26´s are not flaming-out exept they run out of fuel or in case of a G20 the battery runs donwn.

Cheers, Detlef

It should prove interesting when I finally get my maiden since I am using Saito 170 radials, not sure I want or need a twin sync on that. I would hope that with 6 total cylinders I can manage to return if one of the 6 fail to stay lit, I will also continue to look at the rudder gyro as a real possibility.

Detlef, der erbärmlich ist, von Ihrem Flugzeugverlust zu hören. Am Ende ist es eine Lektion, die für alle von uns gelernt wird

Hi Chasman,

thanks for your regrets, but do not worry it is not a loss, its only a damage. Like in real aviation.

Some hours (or more) in the workshop and soon the cat will be back in the air....

Remeber a cat has about nine lifes !

Finally I was lucky, that it is not a total loss !

Cheers, Detlef

HI Detlef

I follow this tread from the begining, I was was a little surprise when I read that you have put a 16x8 3 blades on the g26
and Pylon a 17x8 on the g20 I found that a little big for these motor, on the G26, Horizon suggest a 16x8 2 blades at 8900rmp
and a 15x6 2 blase at 9500 for the G20, I'm not an motor expert but maybe the problem is that you g26 are pulling way too
hard, on my t/c I will put 2 g20 with a 15x8, I will tell the result in a couple of week

Thanks Paul - I shall try to adjust the retracts as suggested by you. They are air-up air-down.

Thanks Alan.
There are about 6 clubs in the Durban area with varying facilities from flying off sports fields to a 1km tar runway ( where I flew the tigercat). As you can guess a lot of enthusiasm in this area. Flying interests spread from slope & thermal gliding through scale, large scale aerobatics to jets of which there are about 20 flying. Send me a pm & it will be great to meet & for me to show you around.

Craig.

PS I presently own 4 ESM aircraft (Stuka, Tigercat & 2 p-38s - one 1st gen & one sharmouth) and would love to add an OV-10 are any still around for sale? - and a Cessna 185 to do in SA airforce camo as they are still in service here.

How could I forget - also Adams A500 with two ASP 160 twins, retracts, brakes which is nearly ready for maiden in about 2 weeks.
