Nope not dead just sleeping...lol

I have completed my TC and took it into the yard yseterday to do the inital run of the engines. I need to do a few mods where the needle adj is - it's a little tight to get to. But it did run with the 170's they sound nice. One thing I did notice is that the Sierra retracts are half compressed! Wow, I'll have to adj those somehow to support this beast. I have yet to weigh teh TC but I am sure it's 28-30 LBS at least.

Happy flying

Duber3 & Chasrb....I am just about at the same point as you guys. I am just finishing the Rx installation and expect to fire off the G26's this long holiday weekend. This has been a long road (for an ARF!) I am having the same compression issue with my retracts. Just the wing alone with the motors before the fuse is attached will compress the retract springs half way. This is gonna be a big fat fattie I suspect. While I typically break in engines in the air....I think I will run these on the ground quite a bit before pulling back on that right stick for the first time. I have installed Gyros on the rudder and aileron and am struggling now on whether to make them Normal/AVCS switchable or just leave them in normal mode all the time. I know I never want the rudder to be in AVCS mode but I think there will be times I would for the aileron gyro. Still deciding.... I will try to send some pics next week.

UPDATE:
So the Tiger cat is very close to completion now. The threaded plunger rod on the nose wheel retract pulled out of the brass block that activates the re-tracts. I was able to thread it in deeper and cut off the excess to allow the cross rod clerence and JB Weld it back togehter so I hope it holds. The Right main retract is hanging in the up position (of course) and it is swiveling (loose) even though the set screws are tight so I need to pull it out of the plane and fix it. Otherwise it is ready to start the engines which I plan to do this weekend. When I put her on the balancing stands I was happy to see that the CG is currently about 1/8" forward of the suggested CG at 117mm from the LE of the wing. So good news no need to add nose weight. The bad news is the she already weighs 32.6 lbs (14.8 kg) as is. How does this compare to your finished weights? I will post some pics later this week.

Take care

Am looking for comments on control surface throws, high rate, low rate, factory recommendations OK etc?

Thanks

JB, THE THE SURFACE THROWS IN THE MANUAL ARE WHAT I USED ON MY FIRST T-CAT, THEY WORKED VERY WELL WITH THE DUAL RATES OFF ON ALL SURFACES. HAVEN'T POSTED IN A WHILE, T-CAT #3 IS ALMOST DONE, SOME RADIO AND AIRLINE WORK TO DO. I'M USING THE G-26'S AGAIN, THIS TIME THE CYLINDER HEADS HANG OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE COWL ABOUT 2 FINS OR SO,
(ON THE FIRST T-CAT THEY WERE COMPLETLY IN THE COWLS) SHOULD GET GOOD COOLING. WILL POST PICS SOON. I'M GLAD THIS PROJECT IS ALMOST DONE, BUILDING 2 T-CATS IN A YEAR HAS BEEN A CHALLANGE TO SAY THE LEAST...

BLACKWIDOW, WOAH! THAT'S ABOUT 75 OZ. PER SQ. FT. FAT LADY. MY FIST T-CAT WAS 28 LBS. WITH FUEL AND THE G-26'S PULLED IT LIKE A 747, TONS OF POWER. THESE CATS ARE TYPICALLY HEAVY AND FAST. GLAD YOU CHOSE THE G-26'S.......

VKerster,

I know it's a big fat fattie! I am worried about the power off glide ratio. How did yours do on appraoch to landing with flaps and lower power settings? I assume from your post about the fins on the 26's you may suspect overheating caused your engine out..yes?. My 26's have about 1 fin hanging out of the cowl but I have a failry large opening around the head. I hope it's enough!

Glad to hear you are putting another one in the air!

Take care

Here are some pics of the gen 4 and gen 5 retracts. There is no increase in mass. The parts are basically the same.
The main differences are air up and down (over center locks), and the struts plug directly into the gear instead of using a wire connector.

I waited 6 months for mine to arrive.

One thing; The scissors on the nose gear have to be turned around. Otherwise it hits the air cylinder and won't retract.

Chief Air says they have the F7F gen 5 retracts in stock, but KMP has trouble getting them...

Hi blackwidow,

dont worry about the weight.

My TC is about the same weight. Same luck that my CG was in place without additional weight. I placed teh RC-batteries behind the wing and CG was exact at 117mm.

On downwind leg I set 25° flaps and on short final full flaps 50°

She lands very smooth if I release elevator in the moment the main-wheels are touching the ground - if not she is bouncing heavily...

Regarding engine-heating I have made a balsa-plate to cover all teh rest of teh cowling, except the cylinderhead.

My Z-26 are turning a 3-blade MENZ 16x8 props with 7100 rpm and already I had one engine out as well...

Now I will test 15x8 3-blade and some 16x8 or 16x8 2-blade options in order to get about 8000 rpm on the ground to operate the Z-26 in the best range of power/torque.

I have spoken to a ZENOAH specialist in Germany and he told me, that we have to be very carefull with carburator-adjustment of the Z-26.

If the engine is setted up correctly for full-throttle and for idle, it may have the tendency to be lean in quarter- or half-throttle operation.

So we need to keep it on the rich side in idle and full-throttle in order to have correct half-throttle setting.

Other option is to use the Z-38 carburator, the ZENOAH guy told me.

I will test all options in a LASER 200 acrobat-plane before installing the engines back to my TC.

Cheers, Detlef
