Anyone ever had those spectators who come up as your prepping your plane and say "I want to see a crash!" Usually kids, but often they're adults. You'd be surprised how many times I've heard this. Or maybe not. I guess they really have no clue.

My wife says that every time I take her flying As a matter of fact, she wants to know when I think one might happen so she can film it !

My advice is to send anyone who says this to the crash section of this fourm, there are plenty of videos posted so they can get thier rush and then enjoy the hobby.

I dont wish a crash on anyone ( ok, maybe some like TonyStott and a couple others ), but if its going to happen, I want to see it too

Many years ago I saw a rubber powered J-3 kit in a "Variety Store" as they were called then. I hadn't built a model in years, so I bought it. I told my wife I was going to build it mainly to have something to do after a long hard day at the office. After we had eaten I retired to my "work corner" and began to build the Cub. Each evening after eating I'd do a little more. Then the art of handling all the balsa sticks and stuff came back to me and I began to enjoy it, and by bedtime I had unwound from the day's events. It was good therapy!

I finally finished it and one evening I took it out back and was test gliding it when a neighbor came over. He said "I used to build those things in High School myself." I thought "Well maybe I've found a buddy!" But just about the time I was ready to give it another Heave-Ho his hand came up and I saw the flame from a cigarette lighter quickly approaching the tail of my pretty yellow
J-3! I yanked it down and asked him "What the hell you thing you're doing?" Very seriously he said, "Setting fire to it, so's we can watch it burn as it comes down! That's what I used to do with mine!"

I set the J-3 down and turned to him and said, "Get your silly, stupid ass out of my yard now. before I pound it into the dirt and then use your own lighter to set fire to YOUR tail feathers!" He was totally surprised at my reaction, but he went home. The next day my wife asked what happened. Seems he had told his wife his version, she told my wife and guess who the villian was in her version?

Anyway, he never came over again when I was out in the yard with a model, or anything else. Not too long afterwards they moved. I just had a thought...did I cause them to moved? Gee, I hope not! Heh! Heh! Heh! Anywho, those rubber models led me on to about 40 or more years of modeling, mostly RC, and now days, I just ignore the "Crash Idiots" and do my thing.

I have been flying giant scale since 1982 and I honestly don't ever remember hearing that while I was assembling, dis-assembling or fueling my planes. Since I participate in at least a half dozen big bird flyins every year I get to talk to a lot of spectators. The kids usually want to know how fast it goes followed by "how much does it cost" and "where can I get one". I have never come across a rude spectator. Maybe it's different in the south.

On the other hand, I've said to a buddy "Hey, watch this guy take off, he usually piles in a plane."

This is one good reason for ARFS, you can set one ablaze and have no personal attachments to it

Cyclic...BWUHAHAHAHA...
You aint kidding.

You have to picture this.

Im at the field, and newbie comes over to ask about my helicopter and how it works. I proceed to show him how collective pitch works.
Bocephus comes over, and interrupts and starts telling newbie that it flys upside down because the rotors change and spin counterclockwise instead of clockwise in normal flight to go upside down.

I gently correct him and explain that that is NOT how it works.

And he proceeds to tell me that I am wrong!

All this from a guy that has never flown, nor owns ANY helicopter.

Actually bdavison, that guy was right. If you look at the blades while the heli is upside down they are turning counterclockwise

As far as wanting to see crashes, I want to see them all. I tell guys all the time that if they are going to crash, wait till I get there, and make it as realistic as possible. The good pilots crash on the field and not way out in the woods where you can't see it. If I crash I want someone to film it so I can watch it over and over.

Now I really don't WISH a crash on anyone. But if I have my back turned when it happens I say what most everyone says... "Oh man, I missed it!"

Let's face it, this hobby wouldn't be any fun if there was no chance of crashing. It's like going to a football game, sooner or later one team will lose and that's part of the game. You may feel bad for that team but you still watched the game.
