tks man but I am not "that far", you'll see once you'll understand how sensitive the helicopter is, it'll get much easier. The only advice I can give you is to have a VERY VERY light touch on the controller. Also if you heli is going forward and you wish to correct it and bring it back towards you (assuming tail-in hover), pull right control stick backwards just a little and even before the heli even starts to come back towards you , push the same right stick forward slightly, in order to set the heli horizontally. I know it's not very clear, I hope it somewhat helps you.

the fading it's just cuz my GF stopped the first video early and I merge 2videos in one. Next time I'll post a video from take off to landing with better quality.

Attached are a few pics of my whites blades with custom gold stripes. Do you guys think its too cheesy or its ok like that?

uuuugggg! i was fooling around with my falcon 40 and i broke the frame! stupid plastic is to weak. but then again i was using it without the main rotor blades and... well yea. So then i ordered some parts for my heli from exceedrc.com and the parts were out of stock! I placed my order and ecery thing was ok then i got an e-mail from them saying it was out of stock. so now i gotta wait a while for them to get the parts, then to ship it and then for it to reach me! that all adds up 2 like 3 weeks. and i olny got through my 2nd battery.
well sorry about my sob story but i just felt like telling people.

I think it looks great!! Good paintwork there.

maybee you should cancel your order and buy somewhere else. It is going to suck not being able to fly your heli for 2-3weeks. check out ushobbysupply.com , xheli.com , or midwestrc.com .

I like the new paint job ! I`m guessin ya peeled the decals off before ya painted it.And I thought all rotors had the tips painted anyway. That might keep me away from walls better ! Is the paint gonna mess up your balance ? I work at a chemical plant dealing in surface material science , and we have EXPENSIVE digital scales<$10,000-$15,000>if I paint mine I`ll do it at work so that I can weigh them and get them balanced. The other question is will the slick surface of the paint on the rotors affect the airflow ? better or worse ? Maybe I`m overthinking this, but I work with a bunch of engineers .... LOL and I need a strobe.....

I got the Hitech HS-55's for my Falcon. They work GREAT! But you'll need to follow my mods to do the same...

1) You can put the Falcon's stock servo horns and links on the HS-55.
2) You have to snap off two little plastic "things" that come out of the main frame (they really serve no purpose anyways). These can be found near were the PWM wires enter the servos.
3) On the back of the TX, you have to adjust the Ch. 2 and 3 switches (just make them the opposite of what they are or else your elevator will be reversed).
4) Get some sticky servo mounting tape stuff from E-Flite. Don't forget to zip tie all the PWM's!

Pics coming soon! So far, these Hitechs work super with the Falcon! I noticed a much clearer servo response too.

Ok, lets break the problem down into the major catagories 1st.

???Batteries good on both Tx and Rx

???Transmitter frequency same as receiver frequency (it could happen) --- look at the #s on the plug in crystal

???Does the heli make any sounds or servo movements when you plug in the green battery???

Let us know, we'll go forward from there...

FiveOClockCharlie,

I was , like you, wondering if the main blades airflow and balance would be affected by a paint job. I had a pair of spare blades so I still decided to give it a go, and subsequently run some tests.
To make it short and sweet: it completely messed up my balance!!! when using the "two cups technique" to assess the equilibrium It showed that one side was grossly overweight! So I balanced both blades using some pieces of clear tape. Even thought the blades were now even, the falcon was still vibrating like crazy! I checked and rechecked everything (sway bar, fly bar paddles etc...) without success.
I then switched to some stock blades, to realize that the chopper was now perfectly balanced and not vibrating at all.

So unfortunately it really seems that the paint job affected BOTH balance and airflow, so I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have access to some special aeronautic lightweight paint. I might still try to only paint 3 gold stripes on my stock blades, to give it a good look, hopefully not to detriment of fly behavior.

I have a question for yall:
How does the helicopter knows where the horizontal is? Are there any gyroscopes in the receiver or servos? Because now I am realizing (since I can now pilot my good enough to notice small details) that when I fly the heli right in front of me, it seems that the whole body is slightly angled (always to the right) around 10 degrees form the vertical. Is my frame fundamentally crooked or is there anything I can do to fix that issue?

Robo,

Batteries (Tx): Brand New
Battery (Rx): Shipped with Heli, have to assume new
Crystals: Both match perfectly
Sounds: I hear the servo "engage" one time and the LED on the receiver continously blinks...

Thats about the gist of it, nothing else. xHeli.com suggested that I give the batteries an 8 hour charge before using. does this sound right? I've been driving r/c trucks for a while (traxxas) and have never had this problem. It's just frustrating to make a purchase and then it doesn't work. Thanks for your help!

good lord this board is dead, although I have been trying to make it a bit more alive, hardly anybody is posting responses or replies.
I guess I should migrate to the Walkera 4 board, shy of 300 pages.

Just thought I would drop a note as to the progress of my falcon40, I know these updates certainly helped me while learning. To date I have logged approx 30 hrs of actual flighttime, early on some of it was scooting around the floor but neverless it was time on the stick. Today I installed my fourth tail motor and have not slammed the proir one onto the floor. Having taken the old ones apart I now see why they are going bad, brushes !! these tiny little brushes just don't last, same with the main that I just replaced it was brush failure. I have started moving the fly bar weights closer to center, have been trying about 10mm at a time. Now spaced out 20mm from point where flybar enters frame (factory setting is 50mm) I have noticed a slightly higher head speed and greater lift, but controls are slightly more delicate, but I do like it better. I started experiencing some glitching just before the tail motor went out, I did discover the TX batteries were getting low, even if you install new ones, check each cell to be sure they are the same. I have had one bad cell in my TX set of 8 and it made for poor performance so check each one. My super skids are on order, when they arrive it will be time to remove the training gear and learn to fly "aunatural" With my performances this past week I think I will be fine as I have been able to stay at head height in a 10 x 10 room without a problem and even able to land on the snack bar. For those of you still trying, keep practicing it will get much better. When you do have a crash be sure to go over all settings (flybars, blades etc) before your next flight, know your heli...and what settings make it fly well........

I was flying outside in the snow today. It was a blast! The sight of the heli stirring up the snow beneath it was awesome. I am doing very well with learning to fly it. I have been doing countless single and double piroettes ( tried triple but ended in a nice tailboom strike. No damage, though).

1st, DON"T CHARGE batteries 8 hrs, that will ruin them, too much heat!!!! If you are using the included wall wart charger, I usually charge the stock NiMh battery pack until its warm to the touch, not amazingly hot. Check them often after the 1st 30 minutes has passed.

2nd, where is the throttle trim lever set on your transmitter? It should be all the way down, otherwise the receiver in the heli will go into a "Fail-safe" mode and not apply any power to the motors. Keeps heli from spinning up when you plug in battery while having throttle at any setting other than completely off (no throttle applied) setting.

See what that does...

New Pilot needs information....

Okay I jumped on the internet after flying my piccoZ and ordered a Falcon 40!!!! I thought okay i will be able to actually control this thing Boy was I misdirected.

I know you all are going to point me back to the beginning of this forum and say its natual and the way God intended us to fly helicopters... BUT!

When I spool up my bird, it starts to strafe left. Yes yes I know I knoe! But I keep crashing the darn thing because it is excessive. And I will explain excessive... In order to get the bird to come about to the right (not the spinning tail problem, that was easily corrected with trim) I have to move the right stick almost all the way to the right. Here is a rudimentary graphic...

[..........0...........] [..................0...]

This is how far I have to move it just to keep it from strafing. I understand the whole theory of air disturbance from the helicopter causing the left drift, but this is ridiculous. It keeps me landing the helicopter so often that I broke the landing gear 3 times.

I have upgraded to the superskid since I know I chicken out a lot and set it down sometimes rather hard. I have also broken a blade and have 2 more sets incoming because I am a too impatient to read or write. However since my 2nd day air is on its 8th day (delivered to apartment office which has been closed the last 3 days along with the holiday last weekend) I figured I might write and see if it pays off.

Also! I did some superglue on the blade which allowed me to do some more thourogh testing. I figured since the blade was already broken and the first time it made it to the wall it broke again, that I could re-superglue it and do some brutality testing.

This worked in proving my theory that even at 4 feet off the ground the left strafe does in fact continue to gain momentum. It also proved that the slight shredded part of my flybar was indeed in need of replacing since it snapped off upon contact with the wall. (Dont worry kiddos I was forward thinking enough to order 2 of those as well

Anyways any input is great. I dont know if the strafe is exaggerated because the flybar is uneven, or what variables could affect it. Thats what I am asking. I have a mm measuring device to correctly align the new flybar when I get it Monday morning. But is it this? I am sure that the paddles on the flybar were visually level, but dont have a measuring device for this. Is that potentially the problem?

Long winded and hopefully entertaining to all you Top Pilots, PLEASE HELP!

Sincerly,

siglost

Its sounds like siglost just needs to adjust the trim a little bit and be a tiny bit more patient with his bird so as to keep it healthy, but I am new and have not yet even gotten my Falcon 40 so I only know what I have researched. Hopefully I don't have too many parts to replace on my journey toward the wonderful 6-ch helis like the T-Rex. Anyway, I've read pretty much this entire forum and I am completely new to the RC world except for electric R/C cars when I was a kid and those little $10 hovering discs they sell at malls. I've always had a thing for aviation and flight simulators. I especially like aircraft with the ability to hover and maintain sustained forward, backward etc. flight so I'm just dying to get into RC helicopters. My Falcon will be coming from Xheli in a couple of days now. I noticed that they were out of stock last I checked so good thing I ordered mine a few days ago like I did. I wonder if anyone has tried the little spy cam inside thier Falcon just for kicks. I doubt it.
Anyway, I have a question about batteries because I will want to lengthen my flight time. I noticed from a battery(All-battery) site that Robotronski listed in an earlier post, that carries 8.4v NiMh rated at 1100 Mah(I'm assuming it would be no harder on the motors than the 1300Mah LiPos). It weighs 4oz and the stock one supposedly weighs 3.2oz(I don't know the Falcon batteries weight for sure). I'm guessing that shouldn't be too much of a problem with it being able to take off without having to throttle up too close to 80% and up. Would this other battery extend my flight time since it has a larger Mah rating than the stock battery up without my having to purchase the Lipo battery and charger setup? I realize that said battery is for the firebird RC plane and that NiMh batteries begin to lose voltage earlier than their LiPo counterparts, but if it would extend my overall battery time and work with the stock charger then I wouldn't mind living without having to make room for the slighly longer LiPo battery and having to buy the necessary gear. Becuase then I'd also have 2 batteries and I could keep learning and save that cash for the advanced whirlybirds, or spare parts(knock on wood). You'd think I'd already know the answer to my question, being an Elec. Eng. major, but I'm still many classes away from getting my degree and I've been out for a while. Anyway, I'm also looking into getting super-skids or the other upgraded frame made for the Honey bee just for more rigidity. I don't plan on crashing, but you all know how it is. The thing is, I haven't been able to find the exact weight of these things anywhere on the web. I'd rather get the ligher one, but that may depend on how much better or heavier than the stock frame. Either way, I wouldn't know how robust they are unless I break down and buy one of them. Any feedback would be helpful. I can't wait to get into the air.

Siglost,

Welcome to the "waiting to receive parts" club. As far as your strafe issue, it sounds like you had a decent crash beforehand, right? If you trim the right stick, and it is still drastically going in a wrong direction, check the "Rotor Head Core". The same thing hapened to me, and no amount of trim in the world would help....turns out one of the "ears" of the Rotor head core had broken. Rotor head core is the part that connects to the part that holds the blades (uhhh....forgot the technical name for that.) and has a bearing on each side. If that isn't broken then I don't know what to tell you.
As for the flybar, you should check out your local hobby store. You can buy 2mm carbon fiber rod, and have it cut to size. I bought about 3 feet of the stuff for around $5, and used a Dremel to cut it. I can probably get about 6 flybars out of that stuff.

Good luck,

hey guys i just installed my second tail motor since the first one just died with no warnings, now im willing the idea to get a ducted fan so i can avoid tail rotor strikes too but i would like to hear from someone that have tried this before

Thers a guy on the Walkera DF4 forum that did it a while back. He's posted photos and everything. Looks good, but still uses a brushed motor to spin the fan and unfortunately, that motor has to run at higher rpm's to make thrust so it will burn out even sooner.

Did I mention it LOOKS GOOD????
