Update on the Hextronic BL ESC part number HXT10 and Blue Arrow BL tail motor. I ordered these from Hobbycity.com on Thursday they arrived at my door today. I did pay the extra $6 for express shipping but 4 days from Hong Kong not bad. Initial thought on the parts quality looks good. Bench checked under power everything works. Loaded the software for the USB programmer and this is what I like you can actually run the motor with you computer. Checkout the photo, yes that is a dyno screen and I actually have the motor running, How cool is that! More info to come, I will probably install the ESC and tail motor this weekend. For some reason it want let me post where I got the parts from.

What is the weight of the BL Blue Arrow tail motor? The BL Losi 10,250kv weights 9.4g and is what I believe to be one of the lightest BL motor for the tail. It provides stunning tail authority with power to spare in the wind. You will be so pleased b/c it will fly nothing like the stock Falcon. My stock Falcon tail before the BL mod could not survive in most windy conditions. Let us know the result when you are done.

Navy1, I have modified 2 of my Falcon/DF4#1 frame to what I call SuperFrame. It cost nothing and is done by plastic fusion. If you are interested I can post a picture. I haven't had to replace any frames for at least a year now.

Navy, here's something simple that I posted on the Walkera #4 thread that might help. Can't guarantee that you still won't break it but it can't hurt. I haven't broken a frame since I did this (although admittedly I haven't been flying much of anything lately for a number of reasons).

Bill

[EDIT] Some of the people on the Walkera thread are also using this $20 fiberglass frame. Looks like it might have a little extra room for all of you who are doing these more extensive mods to your Falcon as well. Check out the most recent two pages on the Walkera thread.

Morning Navy 1:
To post a picture, look on the bottom left of the reply window, it says click here to upload images.
This is a picture of my newest heli, just got it today. Maybe I can fly this one with out breaking it.

Have A Great Day

UTM, are you running a heat sink on the Slo-Max? Also what tooth count pinion are you running on the Slo-Max?

I am running a heat sink on my Slo-max with the artic silver thermal paste. That actually gets hot enough I can almost not touch it. The motor casing I can comfortably touch but is pretty warm. I am running a 10t pinion. Seems to be the best option to bring headspeed up to hover level at about 65% stick. I had put a 9t on to begin with and I was at around 75% for hover and the tail was ahead of the rest of the heli. I wonder from others using that motor if they have similar experiences. There are two other factors that contribute as well. First My heli is heavy. Between the super skids and heavy battery she weighs in at 347.28g Second is the 2000 mah batteries I use get me 19:30 +/- 10 second flights. The motor turns hard for a long time. I suppose when I count flight time in the future I will refer to minutes instead of packs. I would say at this point I have already put nearly as many minutes on this motor as on the king motor in less flights. I was using 800 mah batteries most of the time flying that motor. Picked up the large batteries just before it gave out.

Navy - I did an easy mod to my frame right at the weak spot just to the right of the rear servo. I'll try and explain and a little later I'll post pics. I used an old frame that was broken and clipped off the side of the motor mount section. I trimmed it to be even on both sides so I had about a 1" piece of 90 degree plastic material that looks like an angle iron. I then sized it to fit in the space behind the forward servo and epoxied it in there. It not only reinforces the weak spot behind the tail mount but also supports the rear servo mount which usually breaks at the same time. I've had some pretty bad crashes since then and have not broken the frame. Prior to installing this mod I broke frames almost every time I had a decent tail strike or hard landing. Keep an eye peeled I will post pics ina couple of hours after I get an oppertunity to snap them. At work currently. Boss isn't so keen on me fiddling with the heli during working hours.

Uri

Navy - Here are the pics I promised. I think it's pretty clear so far as the placment of the support piece. Again what you are looking at is a part of a broken frame. I cut between the motor mount opening and the edge and cleaned up the motor mount edge to be roughly straight. The second pic was a little bit funny in the angle and it looks like the piece is not seated all the way down. It is with the 90 all the way in the corner between the frame bottom and the servo mount.

Great Life, the Blue Arrow BL tail motor is advertised at 13 grams, but I weighed mine on a set of digital scales and it weighs in at 18 grams. This weight is consistant with what others have reported which was 17 grams, so my scale could be off by a gram. I would love to use the Losi motor but it is only rated for a 2 cell LiPo and I am running a 3 cell LiPo. Hopefully my pinion will be here on Monday and I should have a flight report by Tuesday.

UTM, sounds like the heat sink is doing its job. You think your Falcon is heavy, mine is weighing in at 418 grams. I'm fixing to take the University of Georgia stickers off the canopy and paint Fat Albert on the side of it! Have you thought about triming some of the canopy out around the top of the motor? It might allow more air flow from the rotor to get to the motor, just a thought.
