Hi people,

I recently purchased a Falcon 40 and I really like it so far. This is my first real heli other than a picco z. I have been trying to be able to hover but the heli always pulls left really badly on takeoff then I must struggle for control. The best I can do is hover in a single spot for about 3 seconds then I start losing control again. The directions say it can take a full week of practice just to be able to hover currectly but I think I need some pointers. Hint, Hint. =) Also, I had a small collision which caused the rear rotor to pop off, losing the little rubber piece, I am using the one that holds on the body cause I don't see them listed in the parts sites. Any ideas where I can get new ones? Thanks in advance.

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 1:43 AM)

Hovering isn't exactly easy as it takes a lot of time and practice. Make sure you get some training gears, otherwise you'll be buying parts left and right. I'm still working it this myself.

If you want something easy, the Lama V3 will practically hover by itself out of the box.

As for the tail rotor, use a piece of electrical tape to keep it in place.

J-Cube -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 2:02 AM)

helinewbee,

You can get the rubber part from Horizon Hobby. Look under the Blade CP parts. It should fit just the same.

As for hovering, a week? Ha, try three months just before you leave the ground for longer than 10 sec. I can help you speed your learning experience up though.

To hover:
First: Remember this above all else; your main goal is to leave the ground completely ('completely' means you should be higher off the ground than the diameter of the blades and rotor head on the helicopter)! This way you gain more control because you've escaped ground effect. Hovering while trapped in ground effect is like trying to stand on a sphere of some kind without falling off.
Second: You want to do this as quickly as possible! If you can do this fast enough, you should be able to avoid what you were talking about where you said you had trouble controlling the heli.
Third: What you say sounds like you just have to trim out the controls. Just push the little nob to the right to counter-act the left drift then try it again.

Hope I helped[8D]
btw, the Lama V3 is a GREAT starter heli!

Im totally new to flying, & just ordered a Falcon 40, can anyone tell me the average effective range it will fly from transmitter?
& also what are good simulation programs for learning?

makatron -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 5:48 AM)

RealFlight G3.5 is so far the best sim i've tried

lama v3 is great to start but i have enjoyed more the F40 since needs more concentration to flight than the lama
counter rotors are awesome for indoors (or office like i do)

good luck mate

helinewbee -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 7:20 AM)

Thanks for the info guys. I tried what you were saying about quick take offs.. makes it much easier to gain initial control. Unfortunitly when I bought the falcon 40 I didn't get a training kit; but I found that hot glueing 4 sets of 3 plastic knifes together and then taping them to the legs in the shape of a tick-tack-toe game works great. No more smacking the blades against the ground and it costs no more than 50 cents.

If you have any RC Car buddies, try a piece of their smallest silicone fuel line tubing.

Good luck with the training.

The Lama V3 is almost too easy to fly compared to non-coax helicopters, it makes you think this hobby is easy. I like it a lot on days like today when work is closed because we're snowed in (I work for the State of Oklahoma). I just went through the factory battery and about to put in the 3e. I've gone through 5 cycles of this battery and it's pretty good. I would recommend this to anyone, especially for under $20. This setup is perfect if you have the Lama V3 and Falcon, as they both can use the same Lipo and you can use the balancing charger that comes with the Lama.

rnicholson -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 7:57 PM)

What is the brand name and model number of the 3e?

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (11/30/2006 9:23 PM)

Here is the battery I have. This site has free shipping if you spend over $50 and use the coupon code CJFREESHIPPING. Let me know if you have any other questions.

gypsy7474 -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 2:38 AM)

Will a program like microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 be any help in learning to fly?

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 2:56 AM)

If you have the Falcon40, you have everything you need to play with the simulator. You can download the free sim here.

Anyone know what the specs are to get a brushless motor and will any of these fit? Thanks.

Slo-V Flyer -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 7:26 AM)

Those motors might be fine. I think you'll need something in the 3000kv range. don't forget you'll need your own seperate 4ch (minimum) radio, receiver, Gyro, and sufficient amp-capable brushless ESC too, since the stock 4-in-1 is not designed for aftermarket stuff. You can reuse the stock servos of course.

And if you're gonna use a lipo battery, get one that can handle the amp draw. And I'll recommend you get some sort of amp meter, like the Watts Up or Watt Meter, or Power Meter (E-Flite), so you can correctly see the amp draw of the particular motor before frying your new lipos (or ruin your motor from over gearing and heat for that matter). There are too many combos out there to tell you what you should expect from such and such motor (though I'm sure others can recommend some power systems better than I can).

I believe using my Power Meter, I read an amp draw of 4-5 amps at WOT using the stock 7-cell Nimh battery and brushed motor. Came out to about ~40 watts of power. A good brushless motor may get away with lower amps and watts with a 2-cell lipo since it is more efficient at using the same amount of power. Of course more power doesnt hurt (unless you "Oops" the throttle and turn your heli into a rocket......guilty) [:D] Perhaps the Thunder Power 720 or 910 mah 3-cell lipos (9 amps and 14 amps current rating respectively), an 8 amp ESC and whichever motor that gives you about ~3000kv or less and can handle about 5-10 amps (overkill with everything to be safe).

Someone else can correct me and suggest better choices. [8D]

helinewbee -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 7:21 PM)

gypsy7474, I have found that microsoft flight simulators (2002 and X) do not accurately portray an r/c heli.

Slo-V Flyer, are you saying that in order to upgrade to any brushless motor for the Falcon 40 you must upgrade the 4ch (minimum) radio, receiver and Gyro. I guess what I am getting at is that seems like serious overkill; though I will admit I am very new to this hobby. I would love to upgrade to a brushless, but not if it means I need to redo the entire heli; plus I could probably go out and just buy a better heli. What I am getting at is a refined question originally stated by TitaniumZX.

Anyone know which of these brushless motors will fit the Falcon 40 with minimal to zero other modifications?

Also, which brushless motor / LiPo battery and charger pair would be the best choice / bang for your buck with minimal to zero other modifications?

One more question, I recently broke the plastic Rotor Head Core and was wondering if anyone knows of a good high quality replacement other than the stock one, like a metal one or something? It seems to be a high stress area especially for a newb who crashes alot.

J-Cube -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 8:00 PM)

If your going to fly a heli with a brushless motor and all those upgraded things, you might as well get a Raptor G2, T-Rex 450SA, Falcon 3D, etc. I view the Falcon 40 as a trainer heli. (Actually, the price on the RTF Raptor G2 looks really good.)

I use Clear View as my flight sim.

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 8:43 PM)

Dammit, my tail motor died for no apparent reason. I was hovering in the living room and all of a sudden it stopped working. I confirmed voltage going to the motor but it fails to spin. The only thing I can think of is the living room carpet because it would occasionally brush against it. Oh well, back to ordering parts...boy this hobby gets expensive. [8D]

helinewbee -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/1/2006 10:01 PM)

Your right, that Raptor G2 does look good and there are so many nice upgrades (cnc / aluminum stuff). [:D] Just curious, I see on the Raptor G2 that there is a external Gyro; what is the purpose of the Gyro and where is it on the Falcon?

robotronski -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/2/2006 2:54 AM)

The gyro is located in the 4-in-1 circuit. The black box the antenna wire leads to .

Its a piezoelctric gyro (no moving parts like the old heli days). Very sensitive to horizontal movements. YAW axis???????

You want to have fun and learn something about your gyro, try this:

1. Remove the canopy
2. Unplug the red connector that goes to the motor that spins the main rotor blades. (makes this a safe demonstration)
3. Turn on transmitter.
4. Plug in heli battery pack.
5. Hold heli up by landing gear.
6. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, tail rotor should spin now
7. Try to turn heli to the right and listen to the rpm of the tail motor
8. try to turn the heli to the left and what happens.
9. Suprise, you now understand the purpose and operation of the gyro.
10 experiment by holding the heli at 1/3 throttle and push the tail rotor (rudder input on throttle stick) left and right. Now you are in control and the gyro minds its own business, rea;ease the rudder and the gyro takes control again.

The gyro helps adjust the rpm of the tail rotor to compensate for reactive torque of the main rotor as it spins.

Hope this helps you out,
Robo

PS plug your motor back in ...OOOPppsss.... [X(]

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/2/2006 3:17 AM)

Robo,

That's a good explination of the gyro and pretty neat experiment. Thanks.

Has anyone had problems with the tail motor dying permaturely? My Falcon40 has only been through 12 battery cycles. I'm wondering if it's the carpet, 7.4V Lipo or a defective motor. Nevertheless, I ordered 2 tail motors, main motor and some blades. In the meantime, the Lama V3 and picco will have to do for now.

robotronski -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/4/2006 4:58 PM)

Titanium,
Sorry about the tail motor problem.

Are you having any issues with the tail rotor blade being obstructed by anything while taking off or landing?

Tall grass or even carpet can snag a blade and stall the motor which will roast it pretty quick.

zergkiller -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/4/2006 11:06 PM)

for those of you who ordered from Raidentech:
1) did you get a tracking number with standard ground shipping?
2) how long did it take to arrive when shipping by standard ground?
thanks guys

akdude47 -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/5/2006 1:17 AM)

I used 3 day shipping, but I did get a tracking number sent to me the same day I ordered (later that night).

Ground shipping will be through UPS, and it could take up to 5 business days, it depends on where you live in the country.

TitaniumZX -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/5/2006 9:05 PM)

They just recently switched to UPS from FedEx. When it was FedEx, I usually get a tracking number the same day and got my shipment in about 3 working days.

zergkiller -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/5/2006 11:16 PM)

okay, got a tracking number now from ups (took 1 day). still says "billing information received." hopefully i'll get an origin scan today.

J-Cube -> RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum (12/6/2006 1:09 AM)

Remember how on 10/14/06 I asked if there was an aluminium frame out there that would fit the Falcon 40? Well, I think the Super-Skids sold on www.super-skids.com would fit just fine. I'll try it!

I'll ask for a Falcon 40 for Hanuka and try it! (Yes I know it's snowing outside and there is already a good 2in.+ on the ground even as I type this.) [;)]
