Well the painting has begun, I put the black (or dark charcoal grey) on Tuesday, took quite a while but it turned out good except for one drip, one stray cat hair and one area that was a little light on paint. With any luck I will get the earth brown on Sunday.

Cheers,

Mark

Oooooo... it is starting to look very war-like in a menacing sort of way..... i.e. it looks GREAT...can hardly wait to see it in person.

Mike and I were out at Tofield on Monday for a great flying afternoon....

Well Gents the brown is on.
I must admit I am a little suspect of the validity of this color, it matches the M&M Model Paint Chip I have but it appears much darker than any picture or artist's rendition I have seen. However it's too late to worry about it, for the next RAF project I will do a little more research; next weekend the green camo, then the TL-P markings in a parchment color, then the decals, then the clearcoat, then a little light grey weathering wash and then final assembly.

Cheers,

Mark

The push to finish continues,
I left work a little early today to put on the camo and all turned out well except one spot where the tape lifted the black paint underneath, a little touch up paint will make short work of that. This is my favourite time of the build as you really start to see what the results of all your hard work is.

So far I am pleased on how it looks, this weekend I will paint on the TL-P markings.
Thanks for the words of encouragement from Wayne and Darren.

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Mark,

That Halifax is really looking great now. It's going to be beautiful in the air. All that trouble you've taken will really pay off. Please do keep us posted.

Regards, Bob

Hello Again,
I put the #35 Squadron Markings on today (TL-P), the color was supposed to be like parchment but it turned out a whole lot whiter looking once on the plane. I will have to dull it out heavily during the grey weathering wash to make it look less obvious. Other than that I tried a new method of installing the decals, I actually cut the decals along where the panels lines are and installed the roundels in pieces. I was hoping it would give the roundels a little depth, it worked okay but I think painting them on would still have been better.

I will put the side roundel decals on tomorrow, clear coat some time next week and weathering wash next weekend (I hope).

Cheers,

Mark

Well the painting process is finally done but not without it's trouble. All was going well untill the low gloss clear coat ended up being very glossy, buffed it up with a worn out Scotch pad which helped a little bit but it still did not look very good. Used the normal technique of grey washing to weather it up, it still looked too glossy for my taste so I gave it a final mist of heavily diluted grey paint to dull it out. As always with these things you always think you could have done better but overall I'm still pleased.

Next is to stuff all the pieces into it and get the engines running, goal is still to have it airborne by the end of June.

Cheers,

Mark

What were you using for low gloss clearcoat? I suppose low gloss still meant some gloss as opposed to dead flat clear.

Hello Darren40,
All the Endura paints I use are low gloss and they turn out with a satin finish, I had assumed the low gloss clear coat would give the same finish. This of course does not appear to be the case and next time I will buy the no gloss clear coat, I had only bought a half litre of the low gloss stuff and the final diluted grey mist gave the finish more or less that I was looking for so no harm at the end of the day.

Cheers,

Here's another shot of the final paint job.

Gents,
Just a quick update, spent about 8 hours over the weekend doing assembly work and almost got it done. Preliminary balance check shows a tail heavy condition which really surprised me, this will be corrected with battery location. Final weight appears to be slightly over 12 lbs dry (YIKES!), this will give a wing loading of about 36 oz/ft2 which is definitely heavier than I wanted.

In retrospect to keep the weight down I should not have gone with retracts and the fibreglass finish as I am sure these 2 items alone added several pounds. However what's done is done and I did put in flaps so hopefully that helps the landing speed situation, I am most worried about an engine out situation, with all that weight will it spin???????

At a scale contest all next weekend so the earliest it will fly will be the week of June 30th, I will post pictures and maybe a video from my phone if anyone can tell me how to get audio across from my phone to my PC (*.THM file from a Motorola Razor)?

Cheers,

Mark

Check with Craig and see what the numbers on his Lanc turned out to be..
I think you will be fine.. With the 4 props blowing over the wing, you will actually get a lot more lift than the wing area would indicate, plus it has a nice thick wing......

I can't remember, do you have separate throttles for inboard and outboards? If not, take the cowardly way out like I do - stay within glinding distance of the runway until you get more familiar with it. My overweight twinstar has a wing loading of around 33 ox /sq ft and it flies just fine.....

Hello Wayne,
I will ask Craig next weekend and see what his numbers were as far weights and loading.
Currently I have all 4 throttles ganged into a JR Matchbox, how could you separate them? I only have one throttle control on the transmitter? Is there such a thing as a transmitter with two throttle controls?

Cheers,

Mark

The JR 9303 does, and I imagine any advanced radio with an extra proportional conttrol could be assigned to a secondary throttle and if you got really fancy could mix the two together.

Actually, the more I think about it, your system would be better. It would be far better to fly the plane and keep it under control rather than worry about whether is was an inner or outer engine that quit with the risk of pulling back the wrong throttle.......
