Has anyone out there ever built the 79" Handley Page Halifax from the Nexus plans? If you have what did you use for engines and how did they work out?

Thanks

Howdy neighbour!! There is a model of a Halifax in the Nanton museum built by a fellow I knew. I'm not sure what plans he used, but it flew very well. he had the two inner engines powered, and dummy props freewheeling on the outer nacelles...

I have seen the model you are speaking of and I assume that you know the builder's son as I do as he is a member of ERCS. The builder of this model was at the dedication of the Bomber Command memorial at Nanton last year on August 20th and I did talk to him about it for a few minutes. While it is an interesting idea to use 2 engines versus 4 I would like to use all 4 engines, right now I am looking at using 4 OS FS30's (perhaps inverted).

Hi!
Using .30 size fourstrokes in a small 2 m (79" ) model is no good! They will be way too powerfull.
I have two OS FS .26 fourstrokes in my Marutaka DC-3 (span 211cm, weight 3,6kg) and it flies too fast att full throttle, half throttle and it behaves as the real thing in the air.
I would go with 4 OS LA .15 engines instead.

Regards!

Sadly, you were probably one of the last people to talk to him as he involved in a fatal accident on his way home from the ceremony. I flew with Phil for serveral years in Vancouver. I didn't know that his son had moved out this way....

Steiny,

I'm a member at CCF. I have a 54" Mosquito (scratch) with twin Norvel .15's. Flies well. I bet 4 for your Halifax would be perfect, and a bit more power than LA's.

I thought a picture of what the Halifax looks like today may help with some more replies on engine choice.

Nony,
I am building the BII version with Merlin engines, thus the triangular tail fins.

Cheers,

Some people have asked me to post a recent picture of the Halifax, here it is. Hope to have it airborne in 2008.

Cheers

Hello Steiny,
I made that Halifax about 9 years ago and converted it to electric with 4 - 400 DC engines and 1 :1.85 gearboxes. It was sold on to a friend who is still flying it. Drop down undercarriage after a hand launch!

Hello John,
Do you have any pictures of your Halifax to share? Did you fibreglass it? Iron on coverings?

Cheers,

4 x 15's would be fine. I built this 84 inch, 8 1/2 pound Lancaster many years ago with 4 x OS10 FSR engines. It flew fine but struggled a little on long grass, once in the air it was fine. Engines were mounted sideways with the mufflers down. I have since gone electric for multis but I build them MUCH lighter, you probably do not have the option now. - John.

Hello Wayne,
The wings come off as per the normal arrangment in smaller planes, the belly pan then fits in underneath.

Cheers,
