Nightwalker -> RE: Superman 2006 Event Coverage (10/12/2006 10:14:18 PM)

Busy................one thing that was actually kind of nice is in addition to the more high performance electrics flying with the kero birds, at certain times during the day, time would be set aside for 15 or so minutes for the smaller electrics to go out and fly............this was a very nice touch, and allowed the small birds to get out there and show their stuff.

O.K.
Everyone know what happen on my landing with Rafale on wednesday evening. All this is Dave fault. He never give me enough time to practice landing. Everytime we go fly. He never let go the TX.[:@]

Here is the best part.
So instead going to the bar. We all decided have a works party. The photos showing how much fun we have.
You guys are the best.
Next day. We flew the piss on this Rafale and no one know it is been repair.[:D]

Ben Lanterman -> RE: Superman 2006 Event Coverage (10/13/2006 6:22:01 AM)

Hi guys, I'm Ben Lanterman, the guy in the electric cart that was there a few days. If I gave you a card be sure and contact me if you havent already. Several guys have. The internet address on the card is wrong but the email address is correct - I hate computers!

Anyway I have posted some photos here...

http://public.fotki.com/benlanterman/

I have about 800 more to edit so it will be a few more days before you see your airplane on the site if they aren't in this group.

I have posted Bryce's airplanes and strange landings, all the F-86's that were there, the B-70, the F-4's including the ones in the 5 flying time (I think, things got busy), the big Mig 21 and all of the F-18's that flew (maybe).

Most of the photos are in the air. The to be edited photos are all of the leftovers of people, pits and flying airplanes that aren't in this first small group.

I had a lot of fun photoing the airplanes and hope to be at the Kentucky Jets event next year and do a Model Aviation coverage of it (at least that is what is planned at this time). I do have one request though - every flight should have a mandatory medium speed nicely banked toward the pits type of photo pass included for slow reflexed photographers.

If you see me in Kentucky be sure and get my attention and I'll be glad to photo your airplane. I can email pilots only with the full rez photos or if there are too many we can send a DVD with the all of your photos. Free if Model Aviation makes me rich, otherwise just a couple of dollars to cover postage and DVD (I decided I would never get rich doing this so why bother? I am a retired aero engineer for McDonnell Douglas and everyone knows we were overpaid anyway!)

Anyway - be sure and drop by the fotki site several times in the future as I get the rest of the photos posted and tell anyone that had an airplane there that they are available for viewing. Also if you had a plane there contact me and I'll get your photos to you.

Thanks for the entertainment - it was a fun event.

Ben

Ben,
We bump to each other few time at the flight line taking photos. Sorry I did introduce myself.
Anyways, taking photos is very fun. I just start doing this hobby last year. For me is more fun to capture the nice photo in camera then flying one.

Ben Lanterman -> RE: Superman 2006 Event Coverage (10/13/2006 11:26:29 PM)

Next time we have to say hello for real. It is a lot of fun and challenge to see if you can get the photo and I really enjoy sharing them. I didn't do much at all until Canon finally made a pro quality digital camera and then I sold everything I had, mortaged the farm, and bought it. I have had a ball since then. I definitely couldn't afford the film costs at the rate I shoot.

At a jet rally or any airplane meet I am totally entertained for several days so it seems a fair trade to me to share the photos. I try to get a feel for the meets but I am biased toward flying shots. Old guys sitting in the pits are mostly not a pretty sight! Most of my photos are just documentation but every so often a winner happens and the pain in the shoulder joints is worth it.

Concerning photography, at least the photo/camera doesn't crash - well almost, I dropped my Canon 1Ds at the Jet Masters contest. Luckily I fumbled it a couple of times on the way down which slowed it down a little and the landing was on soft grass. Scared me just a little :-)

I really enjoy flying models and have been doing it for over 50 years but my biggest models today are around 7 lbs. They are the old style pattern ships or scale models that I have converted to electric. I just can't afford anything like the jets of today (especially after buying all the camera stuff).

I helped design the F-15 from the aerodynamics point of view and feel a special connection to those models as well as the F-4 and F-18. I spent many hours in the wind tunnel with scale models around 4.7% and 13% scale and always wondered how the 13% scale would fly with a jet or two. I remember reading a learned paper that put forth the proposition that a minature turbine was impossible to make! I bet that guy is a little surprised today.

The military flying with five F-4's was just amazing. I was really impressed with the overall quality of the flying also. All those landings right down the runway in the worst of conditions. Whow.

Again - the next time we see each other let's talk a bit more.

Ben

Nightwalker -> RE: Superman 2006 Event Coverage (10/14/2006 12:19:29 AM)

Ben,

Thank You for taking the time to photograph and post the pictures of my jets. You are truly a professional. I only wish I had a bit more time to chat with you about your former career, having a background/degree in aeronautical engineering myself...........I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice in careers...............that is............until I push the throttles up. [;)] Hopefully, I'll catch up with you somewhere in the future where we can talk a bit more. Thank You again.

A big thanks to Tam and others who posted a few shots of my birds as well, as I have zero flying shots in my cameras.........Tam you're well on your way to being a professional with all of your shots...........excellent.

Most that know me know that I started taking pictures a few years ago at the small shows, then the bigger ones and posting what goes on behind the scenes online, mainly because it was entertaining. I'll never be a professional photographer (nor do I want to be....way too much skill and equipment required for me!).........and especially with my little Kodak 3.1 megapixel.............but its still fun to go back and relive a little of what was going on at the time. My hats off to all you guys who get "the great shot."

Bryce

Nightwalker -> RE: Superman 2006 Event Coverage (10/14/2006 12:38:39 AM)

Now..................I've received numerous inquiries and requests for info on the lights/afterburners.

So here's the story.

A little over a year and a half ago, I had a layover in Portland, Oregon (PDX). In addition to being a commercial airport, the Air National Guard has a base there as well, with F-15's. Those of you who are fortunate to live next to commercial airports like Portland, Springfield, St. Louis........etc, get to see (and hear) these 15's and 16's all of the time so you know what I'm talking about.

Well, we arrived in the early afternoon and while on final we were told that a pair of F-15's would be departing off of our runway, (which was unusual because they normally use the other runway but for some reason they used the left side today. So even from several miles out you could clearly see four afterburners light up as both jets blasted outta there.

To make a long story shorter, I started thinking about how to do afterburners on the models...........now I had seen a few attempts at putting clusters of lights in the tailcones etc, but I figured there has got to be some other way, I even thought about somehow trying to shine a bright light down the tailpipe! Well, while we were waiting for the crew van out by the control tower, I heard this ripping sound coming from the distance...........sometimes the 15's at PDX give a little bit of a show by getting airborne and sucking up the gear and roaring down the runway at like 30 feet for all the passengers in the terminal.........so I knew what was coming............or so I thought...........well...........just about the time I saw the two tails coming over the tops of the buildings/terminal....................he pulls vertical just about in line with the tower and goes straight up! Then pulls hard and dissappears eastward. BINGO!

What I saw finally gave me the idea, so when I arrived at my hotel room I grabbed a cup and a ruler from my flight bag and started drawing on the back of my flight schedule.

The pictures below are what I saw, and what I drew on the back of my schedule. (I showed this to a few of you guys out there at Superman)
