hmmmm, $480 for an endurance and a light weight speed pack inclusive charger. That is definitely the way to go. A light weight pack with adjustable voltage - sweeeeeeeeeeeet, can you say mid fourties

With the short charge times and the high cycle number, two sets is all you need .... there goes Christmas for the Kranks, hehe

If you could swing $600 for 2 Kits you would have 2 chargers (Backup) and only 30 min down time...... could almost run back to back to back to back....... with 2 sets. And setting for 45A and 18volts would be reliable endurance runs... I am so interested, now where do they pay for blood donations?

Hmmmm, I thought the charge time for the 4600 is 30 mins. I am thinking starting with two fully charged packs, start with the speed pack (light 2300) to get your measured test runs in, then while these charge use the big packs for fun and play. I noticed that the price for the charger in the 2300 and 4600 kits is different if you look at the base batt pack price. So if I get a 2300 starter kit for $219 and two 4600 for $139 each it comes to only $500
I will definitely also get a 2300 pack, I plan on building a hydro using an SV 27 motor set (compared to other brushless and esc combos it is a steal ) from Offshore Electrics and want to go as light as possible

The 2300's might have more life in them than we'd expect. In the "Testimonial" section, a guy running electric R/C jets said this:

"Wagoner was initially worried about the duration because A123Systems' battery offers 2.3 Ah while lithium polymers of similar size and weight offer 3.7 Ah. However, the hotter the lithium polymers got, the worse the capacity gets. Conversely, the A123Systems battery remained at the same temperature for a six minute flight, during which it easily reach 55 to 60 amps."

"With 2.3 amp hours you immediately think less duration but the lower temperature leads to a longer run time," said Wagoner. "I know it defies logic, but I have seen this first hand."

So giving the 2300's a shot by themselves might be just right. The reduced weight would cause lower draw, with less weight to push around. If they run long enough to finish a race (if that's what you're doing) that's all you'll need.

Very smart going with the 2300s for race trim. I saw that also....they pack about the equivalent of GP3300s. Also, from their forum, it doesn't look like there's a reduction in performance when stepping-up the voltage for what we'll be using it for. Although, I'm waiting for a reply because the torque application here is different.

Yes, the 4600s do have a charge time of 30 min.

Hey Guys,

Looks like you have a pretty good forum going on here about the batteries. We have a tester in the NAMBA world and he has had great results with the batteries. Link to Video with A123 batteries.

Let me know if you guys have any questions about the batteries I can answer.

Brian

Brian, Thanks for the vid.

Here's the post I pulled from your A123 Batts thread.

Hello Raydee,

Thanks for your interest in our batteries. There are two option that would work to replace your NiMH batteries that you are currently using.

Option 1) you can purchase two of our Hypersonic 2300 6.6V batteries.

This will give you runtime that is a little bit less (our 2300 batteries typically compare to a 3000 or 3300 NiMH) and comparable voltage (13.2 as opposed to 14.4). This setup would also weigh half of what your NiMHs currently weigh (battery setup weight = 310g). Because of the voltage difference the boat may run a little bit slower without some small changes, though sometimes the weight loss in batteries makes up for it. Because of the amperage capabilities that our batteries have you could simply change to a larger prop. this would allow you to run at the lower voltage, but draw more amps to keep the speeds you are used to seeing.

Option 2) You can purchase two of our Hypersonic 4600 6.6V batteries.

This will give you more run time, the same voltage as discussed above, and a little bit less weight (620g).

Both of these batteries are offered as a combo with our charger that will help save some money. The charger will charge the Hypersonic 2300 batteries in about 15 minutes each, and it will charge the Hypersonic 4600 batteries in about 30 minutes each.

Please let me know if you have any more questions,

Brian

Brian,
You didn't mention the use of the Turbo electronics package for increasing the voltage to 7.2v/pack. This must be a very new product? I typically run 7-9min on 4500mAh NiMh packs (2 - 7.2v).
1. How much of a decrease in run time and performance (if any due to decrease in weight) could be expected by using the 4600mAh packs along with utilizing the voltage step-up from 6.6v to the 7.2v-10v range?
Very interested in converting from NiMh to Lion.
2. Using 2300s for race trim would be equivelant to the GP3300 NiMhs even though the 2300lion packs run at 6.6v? I'm guessing the lithium punch and weight diff would make up for the lower v.
3. How long does the sale last for the Turbo Starter Kit w/ 2 4600mAh 2S packs?

Thanks.

A couple more Brian.
1. Can you use the Turbo Module with the 2300s, or are they just for use with the 4600s?
Don't have to answer. I found the answer. Yes.
2. From the pictures I notice all your chargers are DC. I guess I can just use my AC/DC converter from my SuperBrain for "at home" charging?

I also like the idea of having a 2300mah set, with 2 sets of 4600's. Would be a good mix. I edited the 15min charge times (Did the math wrong when I was figuring out you could have 1 pack on each charger=15min...BUT I forgot the diff between 2300/4600..... I got to calm down

I run @32MPH on my tired GP3300's and if these 2300mah packs are even slightly better. (12cGP3300=@27oz) vs, (2s1p 2300's= @7oz)...... losing 20oz! This SV might be a new beast on 2300's. Would be the 'Speed pack' and 4600's for the 10min runs. Heck, might be worth just getting all 2300's (can double up on packs for 4600).

Same question I had. The Brain puts out 13.5v. Also how many times can ya cycle these things in a day. I mean in 8hrs I could go past a half dozen cycles on a sunny day.

Wait a minute...umm, I mean wait no more!

http://www.a123racing.com/

There you go...they DO sell RC packs, and a charger to end users. The voltages are a little off for what we need (their cells are 3.3V each), but it's a start.

The prices aren't outrageous either.

I would say a 2300Mah 9V battery for $79.00 is still a little high. I will wait. It will all be relevant soon.
