Come on man. That's like asking who Earnhardt is in stockcars.

No, just kidding. He's the one that set the 140.9mph FE record.

I'll PM you the link. It's to the "other forum with the pirates. Can't come straight out and say it in this forum. A no no.

Anyone charging IB4200's with a Super Brain (989...or 977)? I have charged my 4200's twice with my new SB989 and at the end of the charge cycles it says 1047 (2nd charge) and 1460 mah (from the first charge). Does that mean I only put 1047 mah into them or is that a total pack #? Doesn't sound right.

BTW...I have the peak cut off at 15mV so it shouldn't be a false peak issue. I've noticed shorter run times since I cycled the packs with this charger after doing a balance charge of .4A (starting at .9V/cell). ****?

Add the 1407 + 1460 (=2867 mah) and start it again. It sounds like false peaking to me. I sure do not claim to be an expert, but I use a 3.0a/30mv charge w/my 977. It false peaks several times with my 4200's and a bit on my 3800's, too. I restart and track voltage drop and temp. Mainly temp. I'll stop when they peak the finanl time at, or about 110 - 120 degrees. Getting 115 - 125% capacity this way. If your stopping on the second peak and it's that far under rated capacity, your packs are still cool. They begin to wram up as they approach "actual" capacity, so just watch the temps. This is simplfying things alot, I know, but it works for me.

Jallen's right on.
I run into the same probs with my 977. False peaks with both 3800s and 4500s. I also set peak mv to 30mv (default for NiMh). With the mv set lower, you might increase false peaks. If you go higher than 30mv, then you run chances of over heating. With 30mv, my packs do a final peak with about 125% of rated value at about 110F. I re-peak one final time for the 120F.

Where are you guys getting the total values for these mah readings? My charger is a bit different (989) but I can only see what mah has been put into it (or at least I think that's what it means). Not the total value. Also, my peak mV setting for NiMh maxes at 15 mV. Strange. The manul for this charger is cr@p.

Also, in response to Jallen's post. Those two mah readings were totally different chargings...not back to back. I ran the packs in the SV until they dumped. ..let the packs cool...then recharged and when it peaked it showed only a value of 1047. My original question is...is this what was the mah put in to the batts or is a reading of the total mah? If it is a total reading.... this charger is a POS.

Rooski,
For the 977s, the display shows the mAh that have gone into the pack since pressing START. On the 977s, in order to start the chaarge back up again, you have to clear the display.

977 charging procedure:
just ran the packs and have cooled down.
1st charge displayed 2000mAh. I know this isn't right because I have 4500s. Press Stop, then Start.
2nd charge displayed 2000mAh. Again, Press Stop, then Start.
3rd charge displayed 1000mAh. Presss Stop, then Start.
This totals 5000mAh. If the packs temps are at 120F, I'm done, press Stop. If they're around 100F, I press Stop, then Start, and watch the temp to 120F. (On my 977, it takes me right around the 125% mark at 120F). Right now, on new packs, you are able to safely go to 125% the rated value of the pack. If they're brand new packs, it will take a few runs to get the packs closer to the 125% value.

Your right. A pain to watch, but I think it's because of the higher mAh packs. Yours only allows a 15mv peak detect.....I don't know what to say. The 977 allows us to change the cell count, which also changes the mv defaults. When I run my packs too low, and try to charge them again, the "brain" says there are only 5 cells and defaults to 25mv. I bump it up to 6 and it shows 30mv. Above 30mv is for Nicd. The 977 also allows us to change the mv seperate from the cell count.

I would think the 989 would have been better suited to handle higher mAh packs! Guess I'll be getting one of those stereo chargers that Funflyboy has. Won't be another Superbrain.

The only reason I kept the977, I was told as the packs age, the "Brain" will charge them straight through. How old is old? These packs have at least 25 runs on them.

Thanks. I'm not that happy about a 1/3 full battery "peaking". Uggg. 3 charges to get a pack full? Another uggg.

I can change my cell counts around too. I am charging 2 packs at the same time on a Y connector so I have my cell count at 12. With 12 cells my max mV setting is 15 mV.

I just re-charged (#2) the packs and it peaked in about 2 minutes with the pack ice cold. I then did a re-start and it ran all the way out to another 1700 mah (total of probably 3800 mah put in...there had to be some left in the pack to make up the difference).

If you don't want to keep track, just watch temps to 120F. Then you'll know you have a full pack.

Were they up to temperature, or did you just decide twice was enough. It can take 3, 4 or more restarts to get you home. Like BJ says, Just watch the temps. BTW, I bought a non-contact thermometer from harbor Freight for $9.99. Works great. It's even got a clock and a stop watch which I have found use ful for logging run times. It defaults to time and ambient temp at idle. Pretty cool piece for 10 bucks.

Temperature was 112 deg. The good news is that the 989 comes with a temp probe and even has an adjustable temp cut off limit. The default is 140 deg. Too bad I can't disable the delta peak cut off and just use the temp cut off as an endpoint.
