I wouldn't touch NiMh cells. Go LiPo.

I've tried the Elite 30C cells and was actually quite surprised with them. I'd say get them.

A safer option is 25C and 4500mAh minimum.

Maybe, but is ~64Amps really not enough for this boat?-the esc is rated only 45 amps? -the price is nice on thease lipo´s. -70$ for two.

I´m hoping that it would be good enough. -i can´t afford many$ more..

, oh and safer? -if using low C lipos, will it damage lipo´s or esc ,what?

64A multiplied by 70% is about 45A. I don't trust the C rating to be accurate for those packs. Just so you have an idea, I race the SV motor in a Tunnel. It goes around 36mph for about 4 minutes. When the packs come in they are 130F. 140F is the max. My packs are 4900mAh 25C FlightPower Enerland cells. I use about 3000mAh.

The ratings on these LiPo's are usually higher than the actual performance you get out of them, sometimes even after my 70% calculation. No-name brands are even worse. This is what I don't trust.

Guys, I've been away from the hobby for well over a year and am just now getting back into it. I actually started this thread almost 2 years ago I think. Wow...Time flys. Anyway, it looks like it's time to upgrade the battery packs on my SV27. I still have suprisingly strong IB4200 packs but NiMh sounds like it's almost a thing of the past so I'd like to take the LiPo plunge.

After reading some of the posts in this thread I think I'll try a couple of the Elite 4800mah 2S LiPo packs from cheapbatteries dot com. However, before I pull the trigger on these bad boys I need to know what the heck the "tap" is (no beer jokes please ). On the ordering screen they give you an option on "tap type" of: poly quest tap...or thunder power tap...or no tap...along with an option saying "align connector". What the heck does this stuff mean?

BTW...I've got an MRC Super Brain 989 charger, which supposedly can charge up to 8 LiPo cells. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLTW4&P=ML

Is there anything else I need to buy to transition to LiPo?

Thanks

Rooski,

The tap they are reffering to is the balance tap that is connected to each cell with in the pack. You must use a balancer to keep the packs balanced. Forget about those long grueling C/10 charges that last 15hrs, the balancer balances while the charger is charging. It is automatic.

Purchase a LiPo balancer of your choice. I use the FlightPower balancer which uses the standard ThunderPower tap (TP)

Welcome back, I was wondering where you ran off to.

Ryan

Thanks Ryan. I was thinking you might be the first to jump in here and give me some LiPo guidance. As always, you are a great resource in this hobby.

I did a search on Tower's website and found this Flightpower Balancer: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRWF6&P=ML Is this the one you have? If so it says at the very bottom of the description that this particular balancer ONLY works with FlightPower batteries. If not, could you send me a link on the balancer you prefer?

Otherwise...would this one work? http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGS7&P=ML

Thanks for all your help.

I have been into planes and have been useing Lipo for 4 years or so. Been threw several chargers and here is the best simple one I have found.
http://www.fmadirect.com/products.htm?cat=45&nid=4.
If you want to go for the gusto there is this one I have as well, can charge 2 packs at one time but costs quite a bit more (got this one too, it's cool but not really sure if it's worth the $$, I like the fact that you can flash it for future software upgrades.)
http://www.fmadirect.com/new_applications/10s_charger.htm
It's from FMA direct and charges and balances. You can also get an adaptor to hook to the pc if your a pc geek like me
You will need a seperate adaptor to connect the charger to a PQ or TP balance tap, it's on the page. I just ordered the CBP 4800's as well, should be here this week .
I have been reading these threads and am ready to start reworking the boat, cannot wate to get her going. Once you go lipo you never go back.
Good luck.
Steve

That charger looks great
I would like to get into more Lipo but the fact I can't use most of my chargers kinda stinks.
That one there where you can charge 2 is awesome.
What batteries do you guys recommend buying?

Rooski,

That is the balancer I use. I don't understand why Tower Hobbies states other packs can not be used. The taps that were supplied with my Flight Power packs, and V-balancer are TP. I've used Elite packs with a TP connector on my V-balancer and it worked fine. Any pack with a TP balancer will work.

The balancer you linked 2nd has limitations as it is old school. It only allows charging through the taps. The taps have a max of 3A with stock wiring and 6A with aftermarket wiring. In some cases I'm chargin my LiPo's at 10A.

The best charger IMO is the Hyperion DUO
