When I removed the head on my bar stock .35 to install a Nelson plug head button I discovered that the two studs over the rear cylinder hold down bolts had backed out. The hold down bolts themselves were still tight, so I just snugged down the two studs.
Are the studs just like jam nuts for those bolts? Is there any significance to the fact that they backed out? The engine has always run fine....

Thanks,
Scott

Hi,

Thanks for writing....

Sorry for the delay in reply.

I am not 100% sure I understand the description here... but I may.
Are you running a FIRE (rear exhaust) set up here?

Any chance you might have a photo to illustrate ?

I believe you are refering to the exhaust plate attachment ? In which case, yes, tighten the bolts well.

Bob

No problem about the late reply, Bob, I've been away.

I'll try to get a photo, but the "studs" I'm talking about are about 1/4" long, look a little like brass, have slotted heads, and screw down into the cylinder over the hold down bolts on either side of the exhaust port on the rear-exhaust engine. I checked the actual hold down bolts and they were still tight. I'll send you a pic if that doesn't ring any bells.
Something just occurred to me...I'm not using the exhaust plate because we're not allowed to use tuned exhausts in our contests and the plate brought the exhaust gasses so close to the firewall they were burning it. Could they be an anchor for the plate-holding bolts?

In the words of Saturday Night Live's Emily Litella, "Never mind!" lol

I just looked at the exhaust plate mounting area and saw that there's very little aluminum there for the bolts to thread into, and those studs are drilled and tapped to accept those mounting bolts. They became free to back out when I started running without the exhaust plate.

Ah...

ya beat me to the reply there

Yes, as you noted, they are in there to provide some 'beef' and a properly threaded hole for the exhaust flange mount bolts.
