At Chris' suggestion, I test fit all the parts together with tape and rubber bands and things look pretty good. It also helped me get my head around how they all went together. There does seem to be one small problem with the length of the tank sides but I can easily remedy that and Chris will make the corrections on the kit.

I still need to think about the tank size I'll end up using since I don't have ready access to the SLEC tank suggested.

To quote Hannibal from the A-Team: "I love it when a plan comes together!"

I have got these 2 mags but I wont part with them. However people often advertise to buy / sell these magazines in the free ads in RCME (the sister mag to RC Scale ). Also there is a specialist retailer of model mags in England its called Hobby Bookworld (or something similar) Fosse Way Warwickshire- same organisation as Engineering in Miniature mag.

To Abufletcher only. If you want I will copy the info you need and e-mail to you.

I have noticed that the book showing how to build a working quarter scale Bentley rotary engine has been reprinted and is now available again.
Although this is too large for your 1/6 Snipe this may give you some ideas on building a dummy engine.
Title is 'Building the Bentley BR2 WW1 Rotary Engine' by LK Blackmore. Price is about £16. I can give you the name of the supplier who has it in stock if you are interested.

I have seen and heard one of these model BR2 engines running and it is fabulous!

kdc, first on the magazines, could you tell me what the two articles cover in the two separate issues. I have four pages (including the one I posted above) but I think they all might be from one issue.

And yes, I did come across the book on the scale Bentley in my research. But the $30 or so it would cost to get my hands on a copy seemed a bit steep and I'm trying to kkep the cost of this build under control. I've seen online videos of the model Bentley in operation and it does sound very sweet! Actually, I used this video to help me visual the effect I wanted to create in Photoshop of the spinning motor I posted on the first page. One reason NOT to do a full dummy would be to be able to use the "spinning engine" printed onto some sort of disc when in flight.

And of course, I think I could easily manage to burn through $50 doing a proper dummy engine!

Don,

Excellent work! Is this kit in production yet? I am struggling so much with my Pflaz that I may need to take a break from it and pursue something else. DP

each issue contained a 23 x 32 inch double sided plan. That is 4 sheets 23 x 32

kdc, thanks for the run-down. Here's what I have. Looks like there's a lot more. Looks like it might be worth the effort to try to locate a copy.

You show from left to right pages 56,54 &55 .

You might try Hobbyist's Bookland ( the correct name )who have a 'Magland' section. They have thousands of mags its like a warehouse with many copies of every ' Model Engineer' published in about the last 100 years . Many other mags too. Amazing place! Its also an exhibition venue -there is a model boat show there 10 to 12 Nov.

OK. Sorry for the delay folks. Chris and I were working out some things on the fuse. In the meantime, I'm looking at the next thing which will be the tail feathers (Leitwerk in German = "guidance works" ). Chris' design seems a little unusual (at least to me) in the he starts with a wafer thin balsa "core" and then build on structure, first on top then on the bottom.

And the first step with this is to make the pre-shaped laminated balsa edges (one for the top and another for the bottom) of each of the surfaces. Though I still haven't chosen a specific aircraft to model, I'm leaning towards one of the late production Snipes with the fuller round rudder. I love the funk of the notched rudder -- and my still go that way -- but if I did, I'd have to give up the cool balanced ailerons on the top wing of the later production version.

I'm very tempted to build both and postpone the decision until later.

The kit provides lite-ply templates for shaping the balsa edges. Here they are laid out for view on the plans. For actual building they will be wrapped in saran wrap and fixed to a flat wooden board (also covered in saran wrap). Chris' instructions for the Pup suggest that white glue be used for the laminating -- and my frustrating experience trying to get neat laminations with CA make me more than happy to follow Chris' advice.

I couldn't resist this shot of my Snipe cowl with a couple of its older brothers! The one on the left is 26cm and would be almost a perfect 1/4 scale on an Fokker DrI and the other, at 30cm, would do for an expansive 35%! I found these two today at the local supermarket for $6 and $8 respectively.

And its about impossible to find alum pots, like that, here in the states.

The balsa core construction seemed to be a popular method in a lot of the older British model plans. Don't see that construction method used as much here.

I have a Dennis Bryant set of plans for the Pfalz D.XII, and this is what he did with the tail. I wasn't too keen on it and did it "a la VK" with laminated edges and stick construction. Still, my brother was building the Bryant Fieseler Storch from him and used the plan's method--worked just great.
It's looking lovely--the Snipe is such a groovy looking fighter. The plans also look terrific and easy to work from, it looks like you got your money's worth with that one.
