<<I still don't have an intuitive sense for which way to move the rudder as the model transitions from "towards me" to "away from me.">>

Try imagining yourself in the cockpit of the plane as you're flying it. It makes which way to move the rudder more intuitive. At least it works for meexcept at a pattern contest of course! (inverted, toward you, away from you, going straight up/down looking at the belly of the plane etc., gets a little more involved!)

A couple of details crossed off the list. I don't really like this level of detailing but I figure I've come this far....

I think it's the venturi for the air speed indicator.

My understanding is that the venturi "exhauster" works as a pressure driven fuel pump.

It's good to be in the air again! Did five flights with the rebuilt Cub today. The first ended in a deadstick but after some adjustments of the needle valve and throttle radio settings everything seemed ok. I still need to have the club "Saito pro" do some fine-tuning on the low end. Landings were all fine except for the one when I flipped it over because of some tall grass on the field.

I took it easy today and after getting the trim adjusted (model was a bit nose heavy after the rebuild) I just did casual circuits of the field working on coordinated rudder/aileron turns. One thing I noticed was that although I've gotten comfortable initiating my turns with rudder, I never level out with opposite rudder I'm using aileron only to come out of the turns. So I need to get used to get used to a "rudder in/rudder out" habit. The Cub is really a good practice plane and I apologize for all of the unkind things I've said about Cubs in the past.

Of course! The airspeed pitot tube is mounted on one of the wing struts.

LOL usually a venturi is used to create a vacuum for instruments in modern AC unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what it would have been used for in WWI

The Saito is now OUT of the Cub, all clean, and ready to be installed on the Snipe! There is an odd sort of relief in this.

I got in four more flights on the Cub today (Sun.) and figured there's just no point in risking the engine any further. It seems to be just as strong as before the crash with good compression and easy to start. I was still having a couple of issues with the idle setting on the new carb (and in fact had two deadsticks at idle) but I figure that's really just a setup problem on the Cub. I'll have to readjust everything again on the Snipe anyway with a new servo connection. Once it's in the Snipe and everything's ready, I'll have the club Saito expert get it ticking over perfectly like it was before.

So it's out. Finally!!! Hopefully to be replaced with a Saito 56 so I can keep on flying and practicing.

And, of course, this means I can now get on with finalizing the front end of the Snipe.

In terms of detailing, I've now finished the pitot tube, the verturi "pump" the cowl mounted gun-sight, and the (mock) cabane cross-bracing wires. I cut out some bits of brass tube to make an aldus sight but since the sight seems to have been mounted on the underside of the center-section that's a bit of a hassle and would make taking off the top cowling a bit more difficult. Also I'm not sure the original used BOTH the cross-hairs AND the aldus site.

Nothing worth photographing yet.

I think the answer was: To suck fuel into the carburator.

Just for fun, google Henri Pitot, inventor of the pitot tube. Born 1695....a loooong time before airplanes. Henri's device was originally used to measure water flow in the Seine River. The use has changed but the theory remains...!

That's cool.....it is interesting to know the origin of these "modern" devices..!!

Just to twist things a little...the Hanriot HD-1 used a venturi as a pitot tube....well, the venturi served the same purpose as a pitot, guess it depended on how the airspeed instrument was built....
