I'm too the point in building where I have to make a decision on what engine to use.I need the most power I can fit into it without tearing the cowl completley up.

I've seen Zenoah G-62 in the nose with an extended prop hub. This moved the engine back far enough into the fuselage that it was totally concealed in the cowl area. The only thing that stuck out was the carb (with the new B&B adapter, that won't stick out very far) and the exhaust header, but that was at the bottom of the cowl. Any of the rear exhaust engines, like a Quadra 75 should be fairly easy to keep in the cowl, although the Quadra 75 will be an awful lot of engine for that aircraft. We've also flown the Top Flight P-51 with the rear exhaust US 41 engine. The secret to getting it to perform is to change the carb to a Walbro WA144, the same one that is on a Q-52, and to send the engine off to RC Ignition and have it balanced and prop hub trued up. It pulled a 25 pound aircraft around with authority, spinning an 18x10 Pro Zinger at 7700rpms. I have one modified as described above installed on a 20 pound American Eagle Spitfire with an 84" span. The plane goes like a scalded ape. There were very few faster at the last Bomber Field event we attended.

The 3w50 has a bit longer shaft than most engines available. Right out the box had 100 rpms better than my well run Brison 3.2...
An extension on a G62 can only equate to more vibs...(my opinion) the engine already has enough vibs...(another of my opinion).... Don't get me wrong G62 are one of the most reliable engines I know of..... but I think it belongs in a big radial cowl.
here is a picture of my 1/5.5 scale Spitfire... similar cowl size as a Byron P51... I know because I have tried this as well.
as you can see from this picture.... the empty beer bottle and the time the picture was taken.... I must have been late to work the next day.... hmmm....

The 3w-50 is one of the engines I was considering, also thinking a about a zdz40,20x10 at 7400rpm doesnt sound too bad.Does anyone have the numbers for the 3w?

This is what it looks like with a header pipe exhaust and longer than stock hub. It is going in a American Eagle P51D which is on a par with the TF. The whole cylinder is enclosed with only the plug boot sticking out a little.

Is there any muffler that goes with that exhaust? I don't mind noisy engines but nothing in a defening way... I still have lots of years left before I loose my hearing....
Lenny, Have any pics? would like to see it... I am intereseted in the AE P51B.

Very nice looking mustang,Well,I changed my mind again.I found a good deal on a Air hobbies 3.2.After checking their website,it looks like they have a pretty decent engine, plus they have a muffler mount system on the back of the engine to save room. They also offer tuning services for their engines, polishing the ports and etc.

King Air Jocky
Dam, the first time I saw your dog's picture I thought my wife was after me again. That's the same look I got when I told her I was going to Toledo with my boys and she was going to have to stay home. Good lookin' dog however, no offense.

Hey Kingair jock!!! Why didn't you tell me you had a thread going over here? I was wondering why I didn't get any more replies on my giant scale post. I don't care much about keeping it in the cowl,it's an older plane.I just want to know if the G-62 will pull it well,as it was a dog with the moki 1.8.Chime in please guys. Thanks, Erik
