Do you have a duplicate of the tubular fuselage plan, or want to sell the one you have. I have thought about also tackling a tubular frame.

hey git, i just caught up on some of these posts. i'm currently building the sig kit and this is my observation. a friend is building the u.s.a. and i'm much more impresed with the u.s.a. mainly the quality of wood, secondly the cabin area in the usa is more scale where as the sig you have built up formers that are in the cabin. i'm working to get around that now to get my cabin complete. the sig is a builders kit, alot of cutting and sanding required. if i had to do over i will go with the u.s.a. so i think you made the better decision even if the wing scale is a little off.
i finished the wing struts last night and i said to my girlfriend that i wished i would of kept up with the time it took, i'm thinking around 20 hours. but the end result i'm pleased with. boy i wish robart built a set of scale wing struts for a cub! i tried to order from dave patrick but got the usual we dont have in stock currently. so much for their claim to having all american made hardware in that kit.
ran out of oxygen last night so i didn't finish the fuel tank but its close.i'm giving up on the fuel level rod being functional, alot of thought but i just can't seem to come up with a way and keep the tank pressurized. next big thing to tackle is the exhaust and muffler. i'm using a magnum 160 twin. i keep saying i'm going to post pic's but never remember the damn camera! i like all of you would like to see this post continue so i need to get on it. anyway i'm getting long winded so talk to you guy's later, jeff

Hi DenisS,

No I do not have a copy and Kisco? copier people do not have an equivalent here in UK as far as i know. The one local copying company (only one to one) that I used previously will not play anymore.

I think I bought the plan from Uncle Willie plans before he relocated to Taiwan or something like that after his wife died. I have since seen his adverts for CD or online transmission of drawings. My drawings and kits are currently occupying the very small room I use as a transport library. The room is stuffed full with models, kits, drawings and books none of which are accessible.

Yesterday was our 38th wedding anniversary and my wife broke her top plate, we went out to lunch today (with her repaired plate) and when we got home - - - - -

- - - - - In the event it WASN'T the dog that wet the carpet in the dining room, the control valve to the radiator had decided to fail catastrophically. I had more boxes of engines, model tools and yet more paperwork "stored on the floor". The dining room has bookshelves ceiling high on three walls and under the window on the fourth. The bottom of all the shelves have things stored there. Everything is on a carpeted floor and the carpet will have to come up to allow things to dry out WHEN I HAVE FITTED THE NEW CONTROL VALVE!

I am wasting time on my computer now to allow me to recover from the exertions of minimising the damage, I'm much too old for this sort of thing.

If you have no luck with Uncle Willie's plans contact me in about a month when things have eased here. You might also see if 3/8" THIN wall drawn steel tubing is available. I was corresponding with a Canadian who has had no luck at finding a source of the tubing. TO work it need to be unwelded drawn steel tubing and joined by braze welding using silicon bronze and an oxy acetylene torch.

Best of luck and keep me advised of your progress.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hi Jeff,

My decision was governed by availability and price, thanks for the reassurance that it "came good" but I cannot take the credit, it was damn good luck.

As to pictures, I have as similar problem, since my hard drive crashed I have needed to use my wife's machine to send pics to RCU. They do seem to eMail OK but since the crash i don't have the facility to edit pics. My son is my network manager but lives hundreds of miles away.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Man I am loving this thread!! I was just talking to one of my friends earlier about one of these kits when he suggested maybe converting it to a PA-18... I will probably be doing one of these very soon with the conversion. Keep up the good work!!

Thanks

Hello Cub fans
I've built a couple of 1/4 scale J3 Cubs out of coroplast. They're loosely based on the big Sig plan. My latest version will be a PA 18 on tundra tires. The pine cowling plug is underway and the fuselage is taking shape. There is a big difference between the two models regarding the windscreen and diagonal cross bracing. The pics show how I routed the 1/8" piano wire braces through the top of the firewall on the Super Cub. The wire joiner above the tank is simply 2 wheel collars connected with a short length of 4-40 rod. It's not quite as solid as the J3 arrangement but still adequate. I'll show you what I did with the windshield when it's finished.

Hi everyone and a Happy new year!

I´m back, the Super Cub conversion project continues now. I have already proceeded where I left 6 weeks ago. Some window posts glued etc. My ambitious goal is to finish the frame woodwork incl. the tail feathers next weekend. Some pics will follow very soon.

Here´s one picture as a "teaser" of my earlier project flying in scale contest. That excellent picture was taken in Kuopio, Finland last summer by Mr. Tero Lahdesmaki. Please check his nice gallery showing more Finnish RC scale action.

OK, my fuselage is about to become ready for covering this weekend. There´s still something small to do, I have to finish my special reinforcement for float installation as well as to glue some servo installation parts. I´ll start making the tail feathers tomorrow, some pics will follow.

-----------------------------------------------------

I have made "the final decisions" concerning the Super Cub build. I´ll use the following components and methods to make it a real "bushplane":

- tail servos Futaba 3010
- servos for ailerons & flaps & throttle Futaba S148
- Solartex covering (silver)
- Cub yellow paint with black lightning on the fuse side
- square wing tips, extended ailerons
- Vortex generators... maybe
- for float flying only

I will install the tail servos under the elevator so that they remain visible for easy maintenance. I´ll use the same method with the wing servos.

Enclosed you find a picture (from Smith Aviation website) of a real Super Cub. That´s pretty much what I´m looking for (except that I will paint my no-amphib floats silver).

I´ll post some pictures of my fuse in the evening.

Here´s the pics of the fuse, sorry for the poor quality.

I will install the tail servos as mentioned before. I have made those servo platforms using some scrap balsa and birch. Normally I never install the servos that way but this time I find some good reasons to do so. G26 is so heavy that some extra ballast in the rear is needed. Servos can serve as an extra weight too. If my servo fails some day, it´s easy to replace it.

Tomorrow I start processing the elevator. Some major modifications will take place to make it look like Super Cub´s elevator.

I concur full heartedly with each detail. I'm doing the VG treatment. I have wanted to for a while. Think this is the one. Good work.

Here´s the correctly shaped Super Cub elevator drawn over the original plan. That´s how the size and shape changes. I´m not using the original elevator parts in my plane, instead I will use my own 2,0 mm balsa sheets. The structure is the same as in my earlier project. Pics will follow.

Dr. Evil would say to me:
"You are not scale enough!"
"You are... semi-scale!"
"You are... half-scale"
"You are... quasi-scale"
"You are... a diet Coke of scale"

----------------------------------

OK OK, I like Austin Powers!

Anyway, this time it´s sport scale. Has to be rugged and reliable. Lots of hauling and flying, no showrooms or contests. End of story.

I love to see a very crudely fashioned model, something that you wonder if it will fly. A fellow standing there beaming at his accomplishment. His very first model. Telling you all about it and abounding with a sense of achievement and real enthusiasm. The birth of a modeler.

I am interested by far in the most humble hand built model than the fanciest production line ARF. Why is that? Is a model not a model? Hath it not wings? Doth it not fly?

I have been using some of the drawings from the super cub website and boy is it a nightmare. I’m aware of the differences between the PA18 and the L-4 I’m drawing a set of planes for the L-4 and things do not match up The fuse is a night mare on it’s own.

I know what you are going through. I have drawn a Pitts Special S1-C that had not been modelled before. I have 3 different sets of full scale S1 plans. When you change mediums from metal to wood about all that is any use is a set of 3 views. The only bulkhead I've seen in a real plane seperates the cockpit from the classes. The firewall and inst panel views work and a rib x-section. The rest of it is points in space. Balsa USA sells a 1/4 scale L-4 plan if that is any good to you.

Cheers!

I am building from the BUSA L-4 Plans. Actually just I have one mostly kitted at this point. How far off are they? I'm not worried about it being dead nuts scale as I just want an olive one with invasion stripes to compliment the yellow J-3 and not sure about colour of PA-18 yet.
